Abstract: The present invention relates to a biaxially oriented polyester film comprising the inorganic particulate slip agent of aluminum hydroxide or .THETA.-alumina having an average diameter ranging from 0.1005 to 3 .mu.m and Mohs hardness of 6 or more, in an amount ranging from 0.01 to 4 wt % based on the weight of the polyester, which has improved surface properties, abrasion resistance and scratch resistance.
Abstract: Compounds containing polar functional entities can be grafted onto the surface of fluoropolymer powders to obtain grafted fluoropolymer powders having modified surface characteristics but without modifying the bulk of the polymer in the particle. The grafted fluoropolymer powder is effective in such uses as an adhesive to join dissimilar materials.

Abstract: Disclosed is a decorative laminates having a decorative paper and having a fine dot-like tone appearance. The decorative paper contains pigment(s) having a mean particle size of from 20 to 100 .mu.m and/or powdery colored fibers having a mean fiber length of from 50 to 2000 .mu.m as incorporated thereinto during papermaking. The fine dotlike tone appearance of the sheet is durable and is hardly worn away.
Abstract: An anisotropic nanophase composite material and a method of producing same. The composite material comprises a nanophase composite structure containing a multiplicity of particulates of at least one material. The particulates of one material are spaced from each other three-dimensionally and anisotropically oriented in a given direction. The particulates have an average thickness of 1 to 10 nanometers and an average length of not less than 10 nanometers, the length being larger than the thickness. Since the particulates of dimensions on the order of nanometers are oriented only in a given direction, the composite material produces an intensified nonlinear optical effect and is excellent in polarizing characteristics, birefringent characteristics, or photovoltaic characteristics.
Abstract: Reactant for thermochemical systems, including a support which is, for example, recompressed expanded graphite or vermiculite, and an active agent, for example a salt. According to the invention, the support is in the form of granules of graphite having a density of between 0.20 and 0.5 g/cm.sup.3 and whose diameter lies between 0.2 cm and 2.5 cm.

Abstract: A composition that when added to a dry material that is subsequently compacted, decreases the porosity of the resultant compacted material while improving the density and strength of the compacted material. The substantially dry composition comprises refractory aggregate coated with an organic compound. Preferably the coated aggregate has a size wherein at least 50% of the coated aggregate will pass a 100 mesh screen. Also disclosed is a method for making such a composition.

Abstract: Improved poly(vinyl chloride) compositions which exhibit improved adhesivity to polyamide which find particular utility in the construction of multi-layer structures, particularly for the fabrication of improved structures for use in forming electrical insulation structures for wires and cables. In one useful embodiment, the multi-layer structure has in the following order: a layer of PVC and a layer of polyamide in contact with the layer of PVC wherein the layer of PVC includes a vinyl chloride containing copolymer or a terpolymer which exhibits good solubility with the PVC, and which further provides good adhesivity with the PA. The vinyl resin is selected from the group consisting of vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-vinyl alcohol terpolymers.

Abstract: A series of new high abrasion resistance coating materials have been prepared utilizing organic/inorganic hybrid materials formed by cohydrolyzing a metal alkoxide sol (e.g. silicon, aluminum, titanium, or zirconium metal alkoxide sol) with one or more bis(trialkoxysilane-containing) organic components or related functionalized species. These hybrid materials show optical clarity and improve the abrasion resistance of polymer substrates when applied as coatings and cured on such substrates.

Abstract: Homogeneous, particulate composites are provided, of about 75-99.5 weight percent ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and about 0.5-25 weight percent of at least one filler compound, and wherein the composites have a surface area of at least about 4 m.sup.2 /g. The particulate UHMWPE is also provided without the filler. Dense, load-bearing articles of these materials are formed by cold-pressing and free-sintering procedures. Cold-pressable, free-sinterable blends of commercial UHMWPE containing at least 25 weight percent of the composites or unfilled UHMWPE of the invention are also provided.
Abstract: This invention relates to a polyester film suited for use in optical recording medium. The polyester film of the present invention has a modulus of photoelasticity of not more than 0.9.times.10.sup.-3 mm.sup.2 /kgf, a maximum surface roughness Rt of not more than 100 nm and a mean interval Sm between adjacent surface projections of not less than 20 .mu.m, so that light scattering and interference are not caused, and optical strain is not generated even when a thermal stress or external force is exerted to the film. Thus, the polyester film of the present invention can be used as the supporting layer or cover layer of optical recording media such as optical cards, optical disks and optical recording tapes.

Abstract: Intumescent vermiculite flakes useful in mountings of catalytic converters are prepared by partially dehydrating vermiculite ore to afford a uniform content of chemically bound water from about 1.0 to 3.2% by weight and a uniform bulk density from about 0.2 to 0.9 g/cm.sup.3. Such a mounting affords good support to the monolith at warm-up temperatures, exerts adequate holding forces at operating temperatures without danger of cracking the monolith, and does not incur gradual reduction in holding forces at operating temperatures. The mounting layer can be applied as either a mat or a paste.
