  • Patent number: 8644120
Abstract: An optical information device used with a grooveless multilayer disc including multiple recording layers used to record and reproduce information signals and a guide layer dedicated to detect tracking error signals (TES) can always stably detect the TESs when the distance between the recording layer and guide layer varies due to selection of a target recording layer. For example, a plurality of light spots for detecting the TESs are formed by a holographic grating on the guide layer, but are defocused with respect to each other. The TESs are detected individually from the respective light spots. The TESs are subjected to an addition operation to be a signal for tracking control, thereby extraordinarily increasing the defocus dynamic range of the TESs.

  • Patent number: 8625231
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include data storage system with a servo system with a VGA feedback loop that corrects gain errors for servo bursts arising from track phase misalignment and difference in frequencies between AGC and servo bursts for seamed and seamless servo patterns. After the servo fields have been written as part of the manufacturing process, in one embodiment measurements of phase misalignment are made and recorded in nonvolatile memory for use during normal operation of the drive. One embodiment includes measuring misalignment using relative signal magnitudes from test bursts with various linear densities written in a data area during the self-servo writing process. In an alternative embodiment the measurements of phase misalignment can be made real-time during normal operation of the drive.

  • Patent number: 8604364
Abstract: A high dimensional touchpad (HDTP) controls a variety of computer windows systems and applications by detecting a user's finger movement in the left-right, forward-backward, roll, pitch, yaw, and downward pressure directions. Measurements obtained from the touchpad of at least two attributes of finger movement at two different time intervals are used to provide a first and a second finger position attribute used to control an application on an electronic device. The finger roll angle is determined by detecting the edge and the peak region of a finger contact area. Also, a visual color displayed in an application operating on an electronic device is controlled by a measured-angle value of a finger in contact with a touchpad.
