Abstract: A measurement recording unit causes the head to move across a predetermined amount, at least more than one track during one lap of track, with a predetermined radial position and a track position of the magnetic disk being taken as recording start points, thereby writing measurement data while drawing a spiral path. A measurement reading unit causes the measurement data recorded in a spiral manner to be read while gradually shifting a read-beginning point within a predetermined scanning range from an inner perimeter side including the recording start points to an outer perimeter side. A position-displacement detecting unit finds a distribution of amplitudes of a read-back signal within a read scanning range and detects, in a distribution of evaluation values, an amount of position displacement of a read head and a write head on the storage medium in a radial direction for storage.

Abstract: A storage device has a head that floats over a rotating storage medium. The storage device includes a measuring unit that measures the operating time and a head slider having a head element. The head element includes a reading element, a writing element and a heater, and a control unit that controls a protruding amount of the head element, by issuing an instruction causing an amount of power of a first predetermined value to be supplied to the heater until the amount of time measured by the measuring unit becomes a predetermined value. When the amount of time exceeds the predetermined value, the control unit cause an amount of power of a second predetermined value that is lower than the first predetermined value.
Abstract: A rotation disturbance compensation control unit applies a compensation signal to a positioning control unit so as to cancel out rotation disturbance vibration components detected by using acceleration velocity sensors. At predetermined timing, a position error detection unit detects respective position errors of the case in which the rotation disturbance compensation control unit is turned on and the case in which it is turned off. A compensation control switching unit switches the rotation disturbance compensation control unit to be on if the position error of the case in which the compensation control of rotation disturbance is turned on is small and switches the compensation control switching unit to be off if the position error of the case in which the compensation control of rotation disturbance is turned off is small.
Abstract: A recording medium storing a write protection information, and a write protection method for protecting data recorded on a recordable and/or rewritable disc from unwanted overwriting or erasing. In order for write protection of a disc in a bare state that is usually used in a cartridge having a recognition switch for write-protection, such as a DVD-RAM, write protection information is recorded in a Lead-in area, a Lead-out area or a recording information area other than a user data area of the disc, and the data is protected from unwanted overwriting or erasing using the write protection information. Also, even though the write protection information stored on a disc does not match the state of a recognition switch of a case for write-protection, the data can be prevented from unwanted overwriting or erasing. Thus, the write protection can be ensured when a recordable and/or rewritable recording medium, such as DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW, is used in a bare state.

Abstract: A high reading performance is secured in an optical pickup even if magnets are miniaturized. In an optical pickup, around a lens holder which holds a lens, track coils are wound from a range of a flange of the lens to the outside in a diameter direction. The track coils become close to an optical axis of the lens and close to the center of a magnetic field formed in a unipolar face-to-face type of magnetic circuit, with the result that it is possible to displace so that the optical axis is hard to be tilted and secure a high reading accuracy. By forming a wound line shape of a focus coil and the track coils into a hexagon or the like, it is possible to make curving magnetic fluxes generated around magnetic pole surfaces hard have an affect in the unipolar face-to-face type of magnetic circuit.
Abstract: In a system and method for a non-contact measurement of the fly height of a slider above a magnetic data storage medium using electrostatic force, a slider with a read/write head flies over a magnetic data storage medium. A series of distinct voltages are applied between the slider and the magnetic data storage medium, and corresponding read-back signals are recorded. Using the recorded read-back signals, coefficients for an empirical curve-fit equation are calculated. The coefficients are normalized and converted into a fly height measurement.

Abstract: a seek procedure for a hard disk drive which provides a significant reduction in acoustic noise as well as high performance fast seek times is described. The seek procedure lowers the peak acceleration for short seeks and imparts a smooth transition from a sine seek to an exponential arrival at the target track. The seek procedure provides an error free feedforward signal derived from a single sine table. The procedure which contains a time domain sinusoid acceleration feedforward combined with a phase-plane trajectory controlled velocity which, near seek completion. The procedure is constructed so that the acceleration begins at zero and, in the fashion of a sine, increases to a maximum, decreases to a minimum and then increases again until a computed switchpoint is reached. The switchpoint is determined in-situ, to provide a smooth and continuous velocity transition from sinusoid to exponential. The velocity trajectory is computed from a look-up table.
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed operable to generate an actuator control signal for actuating a head over a disk. A memory address is used to read a first state k variable from a first state variable memory SVM1. The first state k variable is stored in a second state variable memory (SVM2) while processing the first state k variable to generate a first state k+1 variable. The first state k+1 variable is stored in the SVM2, and the memory address is assigned to the SVM2 so that the first state k+1 variable becomes a second state k variable and the first state k variable becomes a first state k?1 variable.
