  • Patent number: 6271795
Abstract: The maximum propagation speed of an electrical signal travelling on a conductor in an integrated circuit is limited by the dielectric constant of the dielectric material surrounding the conductor. Rather than transmitting an electrical signal through a conductor that is surrounded with a dielectric material having a dielectric constant of two or more, the signal is propagated as an electromagnetic wave through air at a much higher speed across the surface of the integrated circuit. In one embodiment, a radio frequency (RF) signal is passed into an integrated circuit package via a transmission line. The transmission line supplies the RF signal to a waveguide-like structure disposed above the integrated circuit inside the package. The RF signal propagates as an electromagnetic wave through air in the waveguide structure across the upper surface of the integrated circuit.

  • Patent number: 5090870
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing vanes with a surface texture of less than 10.times.10.sup.-6 inches rms. The method employs a fluent mass having a particulate size less than 1.5 inches and abrasive materials in a centrifugal barrel to achieve a surface texture between 11-27.times.10.sup.-6 inches rms. A refinement cut employs a finer abrasive and a cycle time of less than 30 minutes to provide a burnished surface texture of between 5-8.times.10.sup.-6 inches rms. A final coloring cycle, employing only a coloring compound, is employed to provide a highly reflective surface texture between approximately 4-7.times.10.sup.-6 inches rms.

  • Patent number: 5076755
Abstract: This invention discloses a bearing device for a high speed rotary shaft comprising a functional bearing disposed on a shaft which is supported rotatably on a housing by a pair of bearings, and capable of supporting rotatably the shaft, a rotation sensor for detecting the revolution of the shaft and a controller for changing the functional bearing to a shaft supporting state in response to a rotation detection signal from the rotation sensor representing that the number of revolution of the shaft is above a predetermined number of revolution. When the shaft rotates at a low speed, the functional bearing is set to a free state and the shaft is supported at two points on the housing by the pair of bearings alone. When the shaft rotates at a high speed, the functional bearing is operated so that the shaft is supported at three points on the housing to prevent the occurrence of deflection of the shaft.
