Abstract: Methods of enhancing the dewatering of gluten are disclosed. The methods comprise adding a nonionic surfactant to the wet gluten prior to dewatering, as in vacuum dewatering equipment. Particularly effective surfactants are oxyalkylated sorbiton R surfactants when R is monooleate, trioleate, monostearate, tristearate, monopalmitate and monolaurate.
Abstract: A method for increasing the survival rate in hypercatabolic mammals following the onset of burn wound sepsis. The method comprises orally administering to the mammal, sufficient doses of ciprofloxacin to attain high concentrations in extra vascular fluid, and parenterally administering to the mammal, Pseudomonas immune globulin. The combination therapy of treating Pseudomonas burn wound sepsis with ciprofloxacin and Pseudomonas immune globulin results in a higher rate of survival than the treatment utilizing a single agent. This suggests a synergistic interaction between the two agents in the therapy of polymicrobial burn wound sepsis.
Abstract: A composition and method for immunizing carnivores and other mammals, especially foxes, against rabies and other pathogenic diseases, by setting out and orally administering a dose of a vaccine, are described. The vaccine is enclosed in a bite-permeable sponge-like vector and the container is coated with a membrane containing an attractant, such as tallow. The method operates by penetration of a sponge resulting in distribution of relatively large volumes of vaccine to the oropharyngeal cavity of the mammals.
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of separating the active .alpha..sub.1 -acid glycoprotein fraction, a co-factor in the lipoprotein lipase reaction, from urine of nephrotic animals and humans as follows:(a) concentrate the said urine to about 10-20% by volume;(b) precipitate undesired protein at pH 4 with ammonium sulfate; and(c) recover the .alpha..sub.1 -acid glycoprotein fraction from the supernatant, neutralize with solid NaHCO.sub.3, and purify by dialysis versus H.sub.2 O and lyophilize. This active .alpha..sub.1 -acid glycoprotein fraction is utilized in effective amounts in nephrotic animals to reverse the defect in triglyceride removal caused by the loss of plasma constituents in urine.
