  • Patent number: 7051685
Abstract: A cylinder head for an internal combustion engine (ICE) includes a lower cooling jacket, an upper cooling jacket and an exhaust manifold disposed therebetween. The exhaust manifold enables exhaust of combustion gas from cylinders of the ICE. The lower cooling jacket has coolant flow paths in fluid communication with coolant flow paths of a cylinder block of the ICE. Coolant flow paths of the upper cooling jacket are in fluid communication with those of the lower cooling jacket through one of a plurality of passages. The passages can be selectively plugged to define coolant flow direction through the cylinder head. The upper and lower cooling jackets are in heat exchange relationship with surfaces of the exhaust manifold to cool exhaust gas flowing therethrough.

  • Patent number: 7051696
Abstract: A bearing structure of a crankshaft in an internal combustion engine supports a crankshaft on a crankcase with rolling bearings includes a play absorbing device for absorbing the play in the radial direction generated between an outer race of the rolling bearing and a bearing hole of the crankcase. The play absorbing device includes a push plug which pushes an outer race of the ball bearing in the direction perpendicular to an axis of the crankshaft. The push plug is arranged in parallel to the crankshaft between the cylinder and the crankshaft. The outer race of the ball bearing is resiliently biased toward a side of the bearing hole of the crankcase which receives an explosion pressure. As a result, the generation of a hitting sound which is attributed to the above-mentioned “play” can be largely reduced even with respect to an internal combustion engine with a high explosion pressure.

  • Patent number: 7036468
Abstract: A variable compression ratio engine has a compression ratio varying mechanism, which moves a cylinder block relative to a lower case. The rotational driving force of a servo motor is transmitted to vertical sliding movements of the cylinder block by means of cam shafts with eccentric cams. First and second rows of spring members and are arranged on both sides of the cylinder block. The resultant spring force of the first and second spring members is applied to the cylinder block and the lower case. The resultant spring force works to reduce the transmission torque of the rotational driving force of the servo motor and assist the compression ratio varying mechanism to vary a compression ratio of the engine. The technique simplifies the control procedure of varying the compression ratio of the engine and reduces the size of the mechanism required.

  • Patent number: 7032548
Abstract: A free piston engine is configured with a pair of opposed engine cylinders located on opposite sides of a fluid pumping assembly. An inner piston assembly includes a pair of inner pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with a push rod connected between the inner pistons. An outer piston assembly includes a pair of outer pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with at least one pull rod connected between the outer pistons. The pull rod extends through an outer pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. The movement of the inner and outer piston assemblies during engine operation will cause the fluid plungers to pump fluid from a low pressure container into a high pressure chamber as a means of storing the energy output from the engine.
