  • Patent number: 6212771
Abstract: A method for making air turning vanes each having formed therein a pair of locking protuberances which adapt the vanes to self-gripping attachment between a pair of rails to fabricate an air turning vane and rail assembly utilizes an elongated length of double plate airfoil vane stock including a front plate having an outer concave surface arcuately bowed about the central longitudinal axis of the plate, and a rear plate having an outer concave surface arcuately bowed about the central longitudinal axis of the rear plate. A vane of a desired length is severed from the vane stock, and the outer concave surface of the rear vane plate is impacted by a punch with sufficient force to deform from the inner surface of the plate a generally hemispherically-shaped button having a lower severed wall which forms a locking lip. The apparatus according to the present invention includes a guillotine-like shearing structure/vane stock support fixture which vertically slidably supports shear blade.

  • Patent number: 6209198
Abstract: A method and fixture assembly for assisting in the matching and assembly of components of a variable stator vane assembly of a gas turbine engine. The method generally entails a stator vane configured to be assembled to a casing with a spacer. The vane has a surface at a perimeter thereof and a seat offset from the surface. The spacer to which the vane is to be assembled has first and second surfaces offset relative to each other, the first surface being adapted to engage the seat of the vane and the second surface adapted to face the surface of the vane. The vane is installed within an opening in the casing so that a first sealing member is between the casing and the vane, the casing is between the first sealing member and a second sealing member, and the seat extends through the opening. A fixture is then mounted to the vane so that the casing and the first and second sealing members are clamped between the fixture and the vane under a load.

  • Patent number: 6205661
Abstract: A fabricating method for a one-piece refractory metal rocket engine chamber is described. Hollow liner sections of a platinum group metal or alloy are inserted into a chamber barrel portion to form the combustion chamber, connecting into a conical portion, a venturi throat and into a second conical portion, forming an expansion nozzle exit of the chamber. The hollow liner sections correspond to the interior shapes of the chamber portions. A refractory metal split hollow mandrel completes an assembly which is subjected to a hot isostatic pressing cycle. This HIP cycle expands the hollow mandrel, supporting the liner, outward against the chamber wall, pressure bonding the liner sections to the chamber portions. Scarfed edges of the liner sections are also bonded. The split mandrel is then chemically removed from the chamber resulting in a lined rocket engine chamber.

  • Patent number: 6185821
Abstract: A method for forging a one-piece or two piece flange-type ball valve, including forging the left and right primary elements, the process including the direct forging of the water inlet seat and the ball valve seat for a one-piece flange-type ball valve, the forging of the water inlet seat, the ball valve seat, the position limiter seat and the water outlet seat. The fabrication of all the center through-holes and ball valve chamber are carried out in a single process without requiring the machining of the interior sections. Friction welding methods are used to weld the water inlet seat to the ball valve seat and the position limiter seat to the water outlet seat as if they were fabricated entirely by forging. The friction welding beads built-up along the mated welding surfaces inside the center through-hole and exterior are then removed to achieve a smooth finish and enable the valve to have a seamless appearance as though constructed of a single unit of material.

  • Patent number: 6173491
Abstract: A method for refurbishing turbine engine vanes in which the airfoils are removed and replaced. The original configuration of the vanes can be modified from a single casting or welded pair to a multi-piece component assembly comprising individual airfoil segments attached to the inner and outer platforms. The component assembly allows replacement of airfoils and/or platforms with improved castings in the form of improved alloys, improved physical geometry, or both. Modifications can be made in the vane class area without the need to modify the airfoil contour by brazing or other contour alteration processes. According to the method, the platforms are separated from the airfoils, the openings in the platforms are sealed, new airfoil sockets are cut into the platforms, and the vane is reassembled.

  • Patent number: 6161285
Abstract: A method for the manufacture of a poppet valve made of a .gamma.-TiAl base alloy for internal combustion engines. In this method, the .gamma.-TiAl blank is first subjected to primary forming, for example, by extrusion, in such a manner that thereafter it has approximately the diameter of a valve head and the material properties required for the valve head. The secondary forming is then carried out by extrusion using a die designed in such a manner that the diameter of the inlet opening corresponds approximately to that of the blank after primary forming, and a cylindrical section corresponding to this diameter, followed by a transition in the form of a narrowing which corresponds approximately to the valve cone to the outlet opening. The outlet opening has at least approximately the same diameter as the diameter of the valve shaft. The extrusion process is terminated when the desired thickness of the valve head has been attained.
