    Abstract: The specification and the drawing discloses a liquid crystal device for use as a liquid crystal display device, a liquid crystal-optical shutter, etc., having a matrix cell structure having scanning electrodes and signal electrodes intersecting with each other, each intersection forming a pixel. The orientation of the liquid crystal at portions other the pixels of the cell is controlled to provide a liquid crystal device with improved display or driving characteristic by removing picture unevenness and light leakage.
