  • Patent number: 8386412
Abstract: Example methods and apparatus to construct histogram and wavelet synopses for probabilistic data are disclosed. A disclosed example method involves receiving probabilistic data associated with probability measures and generating a plurality of histograms based on the probabilistic data. Each histogram is generated based on items represented by the probabilistic data. In addition, each histogram is generated using a different quantity of buckets containing different ones of the items. An error measure associated with each of the plurality of histograms is determined and one of the plurality of histograms is selected based on its associated error measure. The method also involves displaying parameter information associated with the one of the plurality of histograms to represent the data.

  • Patent number: 8364629
Abstract: A method for determining a target path for a model-based control system. The model-based control system includes a directed acyclic graph, where the directed acyclic graph includes a plurality of vertices interconnected by a plurality of edges. The method includes the steps of performing a depth-first search of the directed acyclic graph for the target path. The depth-first search is operative to return an explicit solution or an implicit solution, wherein the implicit solution is determined using a heuristic. The method further includes determining if the depth-first search returned an explicit solution or an implicit solution, and if the depth-first search returned an implicit solution, constructing the target path from the implicit solution. The method may further include constructing a pattern database.

  • Patent number: 8352407
Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products are provided for decision making under uncertainty. A causality framework is provided to define relationships between an alternative (Ai) of a set of alternatives and at least one performance indicator of a set of performance indicators. A k-concurrent lottery (Li) associated with the alternative (Ai) is conducted, the alternative (Ai) having consequences over k ones of the set of performance indicators. The k-concurrent lottery (Li) is homogenized over the set of performance indicators if the k ones is less than a number of the set of performance indicators. An expected utility of the k-concurrent lottery (Li) for each one of the set of alternatives is computed. One alternative is selected from the set of alternatives, the selection occurring in accordance with a selection criteria based on the expected utility.

  • Patent number: 8346701
Abstract: In some implementations, a plurality of first questions and corresponding first answers are identified at a community question-answer (CQA) site as a plurality of first question-answer (q-a) pairs. A query thread comprised of a second question and a plurality of candidate second answers is selected for making a determination of answer quality. A set of the first questions that are similar to the second question are identified from the plurality of first questions. First linking features between the identified set of first questions and their corresponding first answers are used for determining an analogy with second linking features between the second question and candidate answers for ranking the candidate answers.

  • Patent number: 8315965
Abstract: A method for object detection from a visual image of a scene. The method includes: using a first order predicate logic formalism to specify a set of logical rules to encode contextual knowledge regarding the object to be detected; inserting the specified logical rules into a knowledge base; obtaining the visual image of the scene; applying specific object feature detectors to some or all pixels in the visual image of the scene to obtain responses at those locations; using the obtained responses to generate logical facts indicative of whether specific features or parts of the object are present or absent at that location in the visual image; inserting the generated logical facts into the knowledge base; and combining the logical facts with the set of logical rules to whether the object is present or absent at a particular location in the scene.

  • Patent number: 8180721
Abstract: Electronic data interchange (EDI) documents are validated by creating an inventory of all rules, dynamically adjusting the inventory based upon entity specific rules derived from a plurality of companion guides, determining a profile containing pointers to select rules in the inventory for each companion guide and storing the profile for each companion guide in a storage. A runtime checker can then be used to check a received EDI document with a corresponding rule set, forward the EDI document if the EDI document matches its current rule set and return the EDI document if the EDI document does not match its current rule set. EDI rules may be enforced, for example, by determining entity-specific rules from corresponding companion guides, by expressing each rule in a neutral and machine readable format, by classifying the rules and/or by creating an inventory of rules and pointers to entity-specific rules.
