    Abstract: A new method for removing HF and related organic fluorides from fluid streams in which the fluoride species exist as impurities and, in particular, from hydrocarbon fluid streams containing no more than about 1.0% by weight total combined fluorides. The method consists of contacting the fluid stream with an adsorbent consisting essentially of activated alumina that has been treated with a promoter material selected from the oxides and phosphates of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, and mixtures thereof. This is preferably accomplished by providing a suitable absorber vessel charged with the adsorbent to form a fixed bed, and then conducting the fluoride-contaminated fluid through the fixed bed, either in a downflow or an upflow manner.

A second elongated module is arranged within the basin at a second spaced apart location relative to the first module, a series of exterior and porous membranes interconnect the first and second modules as well as inwardly opposing wall edges of the basin proximate the modules and in order to divide the basin into first and second zones. The second module vaporizes a substantial remaining component of the chemical contaminant concurrent with discharging, from the first zone into the second zone, a further filtrated water output.

    Abstract: A pitcher or carafe housing is provided that has a raw water reservoir. A high performance filter receives raw water from a lower portion of the reservoir. The water is preferably received at or travels through a water entry tube to the back and bottom of the filter. In about 1-3 minutes the water percolates through the filter element, until it reaches a water exit port. A pouring chamber may be provided at the side of the pitcher for receiving the water from the water exit port, so that the water will continue to be treated and flow up into the pouring chamber until the water level equalizes in height in the reservoir and the pouring chamber. The filter and its housing may be placed into and removed from the inside of the raw water reservoir, or the filer housing may be side loaded. The filter media may be a polyester non-woven mat with a weight of 4-7 oz./yd.2 impregnated with carbon or zeolite and subject to compression between about 25-75% (e.g. about 50%).

    Abstract: A method for purifying contaminated water involves passing contaminated water through a porous bed of steel slag. The steel slag can be used to remove various contaminants or reduce the concentration of such contaminants, such as heavy metals (for example, hexavalent chromium), chlorinated organic compounds, and certain inorganic anions. The method preferably involves placing an underground barrier of a porous bed of steel slag in a flow path of contaminated groundwater then allowing contaminated groundwater to pass through the barrier to purify the contaminated groundwater. The slag particles may be used as produced with no further grinding necessary, although the slag may be passed through a sieve or sieves to obtain a set of slag particles having a median diameter of about ⅛ inch to 1 inch, and preferably between about ¼ inch to ⅜ inch. Due to the inherent permeability of slag, no additive need be mixed with the slag.

    Abstract: Discrete non-clumping mechanically stable geometric alloyed material shapes having about 55-95% by weight thermoplastic elastomer and about 5-45% thermoplastic polymer and about 0-12% by weight filler are used for removing organic contaminates from contaminated fluids. The shapes are typically spheres having a maximum dimension of 0.125 inches, or circular discs having a thickness of less than 6 millimeters. The shapes are put in a loose form or packing, and a fluid containing organic contaminants (such as water, air, or a soil slurry) is brought into contact with the shapes so that the shapes absorb organic contaminants from the fluid, typically absorbing more than 90% of the contaminants in the first pass through. The contaminated fluid is typically passed through an ozone generator before being brought into contact with the shapes. The shapes may be foamed, e.g. utilizing about 0.1-10% by weight foaming agent.

Instead of drilled or laser-cut holes or slits, the slits are formed by stamping discs from the stainless steel plate, such that the discs extend parallel to the surrounding flat area but are raised just sufficiently to define a plurality of slits under each disc, preferably two to four slits, each being an arc of slightly less than 180°, 120° or 90°, respectively. A pair of metal bridges remain to integrally connect the raised disc and the surrounding flat field. Consistent perforation width is achieved, at, for example, 0.010″ width varying by less than 0.001″ in either direction, improving consistency of pressure drop.
