Patent number: 4494434Abstract: This invention provides a quick and accurate gauging means for locating and clamping a guide onto the top surface and leading edge of a workpiece, with respect to the line of cut desired. During execution of the cut, the gauging member of the guide is automatically returned to its storage position and cocked for the next cut. This guide is completely operable with only one hand, leaving the other hand simultaneously free for holding and operating the portable hand power saw. This invention yields cuts that are accurate and more quickly executed than freehand cuts or cuts where other types of saw guides are employed.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1982Date of Patent: January 22, 1985Inventor: Robert W. Patent number: 4485711Abstract: A straddle block is used with a table saw having a rip fence, and consists of a body having a substantially vertically extending fixed leg, a bridge extending from the fixed leg, an adjustable leg attached to and vertically displaceable relative to the bridge. The vertically adjustable leg may be reversed for right or left-handed use, and has opposing, substantially horizontal, rectilinear edges for engaging an upper surface of a piece of stock to be cut on the table saw, and opposing outwardly extending step portions adjacent an end of each rectilinear edge for engaging the trailing end of the stock as it is pushed across the saw table. The bridge spaces the fixed leg from the adjustable leg sufficiently to receive a rip fence therebetween such that the straddle block may slidably engage the rip fence without skewing relative thereto.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1982Date of Patent: December 4, 1984Assignee: Shopsmith, Inc.Inventor: John W. Patent number: 4476753Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for cutting a magnetic core spirally wound from a ribbon of glassy metal. The core is mounted on a mandrel, and a portion of the core is appointed to be cut. A clamping mechanism applies to the outside peripheral surface of said portion, a compressive clamping force directed toward said surface and normal thereto. A positioning mechanism locates and fixes the core and mandrel onto an indexing mechanism. The indexing mechanism moves the core and mandrel to a preselected fixed position, and a cutting mechanism cuts the core.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1982Date of Patent: October 16, 1984Assignee: Allied CorporationInventors: Hsin L. Patent number: 4473927Abstract: A trim for a fabric mounting track system as disclosed and claimed in the applicant's prior application, Ser. No. 441,990, filed on Nov. 16, 1982. The trim consists basically of a unitary substantially F-shaped structure having a flat trim portion. There is preferably a retaining portion extending at right angles to the trim portion, as well as an intermediate portion, also extending from the trim portion and at right angles thereto and spaced from the retaining portion. The retaining and intermediate portions are arranged to fit precisely over one of the hinge lock or back support plates of the track mounting system. The trim portion fits over the two plates to provide a pleasing appearance and to lend mechanical rigidity to the mounting track system.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 1983Date of Patent: October 2, 1984Inventor: Lloyd C. Patent number: 4474249Abstract: An earth boring machine is shown with an improved kelly seal. The machine includes a hydraulic cylinder and a kelly rotatably carried within the cylinder and axially movable with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. A rotary quill surrounds the kelly for supplying rotational force to the kelly. A packing assembly carried about the kelly within the hydraulic cylinder proximate and end thereof seals hydraulic fluid within the hydraulic cylinder. An improved retaining assembly connects the packing assembly to the rotary quill but allows limited relative rotational movement of the packing assembly with respect to the rotary quill about the longitudinal axis of the kelly. The limited movement provided by the retainer assembly isolates the packing assembly from drive torque which is transferred from the rotary quill to the kelly, thereby reducing the tendency of the packing assembly to drive the kelly.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1982Date of Patent: October 2, 1984Assignee: Hughes Tool CompanyInventors: Anton F. Zahradnik, John W. Stevens

Patent number: 4468993Abstract: A bucking station for small logs is disclosed, in which a log is scanned to determine its size and shape, the resulting data are analyzed by a computer which determines the optimum locations for cuts, and the proposed cut locations are displayed on the log optically for the operator's inspection. If the operator overrides any of the proposed cuts, the computer recalculates any cuts not specified by the operator. When all cuts have been approved, the log is kicked to a cutting bed, where the cuts are made by means of two independently controllable traveling saws. The cutting bed is preferably defined by three sets of parallel plates. The first set comprises stationary plates having V-shaped upper edges which define a V-shaped trough in which the log is initially received. The second and third sets of plates are vertically movable and, when raised, together define a second V-shaped trough located above the first trough.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1982Date of Patent: September 4, 1984Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventors: Jack R. McCown, J. Rogers Firth

Patent number: 4466318Abstract: A drive system for the cutting station in a platen press has four toggle joints supporting the platen and each having a cam follower for moving the toggle joint by an associated rotating cam. The four toggle joints are disposed in pairs perpendicularly to the transport direction of sheets in the press. The pairs of toggle joints are aligned, with one pair of toggle joints being disposed between the other pair. The toggle joints are connected to a release device controlled by a security coupling. The cams are mounted on a common shaft provided at one end with a braking mechanism. Declutching of the security coupling simultaneously commands operation of each release device and of the braking mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1983Date of Patent: August 21, 1984Assignee: Bobst SAInventor: Gregor Schoch

Patent number: 4455908Abstract: Pairs of parallel rods spaced from each other along the path of miter saw movement for the saw to pass between them. At least one roller is mounted on each rod in a pair. The rollers have a plurality of axially spaced apart annular grooves that are occupied by resilient or elastomeric rings such that corresponding rings on one roller are in tangential contact, or nearly so, with the rings on the other. The rings yield when a saw blade is inserted between them to maintain opposing forces on the sides of the blade for constraining it to move in a single plane.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1982Date of Patent: June 26, 1984Assignee: Hempe Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventor: Burton G. Patent number: 4455902Abstract: An apparatus for parting-off pieces, particularly pieces of candy, from a strand of material, particularly a soft plastic strand of material, wherein the parted-off piece arrives on the upper side of the knife blade and is moved by this in the conveying direction so that there is practically no difference in speed between the parted-off piece and the entrainment member of a continuous conveyor engaging behind this, which conveyor pushes the parted-off pieces, with constant spacing apart, to a packing station or another further processing station. As a result, deformation and damage to the parted-off pieces is avoided during the conveying.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1983Date of Patent: June 26, 1984Assignee: Rose Verpackungsmaschinenfabrik Theegarten GmbH & Co.Inventor: Heinz Schmitz
