Abstract: A gravity flow cassette for use with an I.V. infusion pump has a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet and a pump chamber with associated pump piston. A valve body having an annular groove and a partial groove parallel thereto is slidably disposed in the cassette for reciprocal movement between a first position and a second position. Engagement of the cassette with the pump firmly holds the valve body in the first position wherein the annular groove is sealed and the valve body can be rotated to alternately provide fluid communication through the partial groove between the inlet and the pump chamber or between the pump chamber and the outlet. Upon disengagement of the cassette from the pump, the valve body can be moved into the second position to seal the partial groove and provide for simultaneous fluid communication through the annular groove between the input, the output and the pump chamber.

Abstract: Return valve for a bag (1) for collecting liquid excretions from a human body, which valve comprises a valve flap (9,10) made of flexible film and placed between a reservoir portion (8) of the bag and a portion having a coupling to be connected with corresponding fastening means placed around an opening in the body. In order to ensure an extreme security against leakage through the return valve, the return valve further comprises a second valve flap (13, 14) arranged downstream of the first valve in the direction of the flow of the liquid secretions, which second valve flap comprises a film portion passing the opening (at 11) of the first valve, and together with the valve flap of the first valve forming a passage to the region between the first and second valves.

Abstract: There is disclosed a sanitary disposable sheath intended for wearing on the penis of males which is formed with a moisture absorbent pad to absorb excretions and urine. The sheath is intended for use by normal, healthy males and not as a prosthetic device, and a method of use is also disclosed and claimed. Preferably, the sheath is formed as a laminate of an outer moisture resistant sheath and an inner, coextensive, moisture permeable liner, with an intermediate moisture absorbent pad. The sheath is provided with either an elastic band closure about its neck, or Velcro type fabric attachment bands to retain it distally on a penis.

Abstract: Apparatus and method are disclosed for directing urine from an incontinent male patient to a discharge tube. The apparatus comprises a sheath made of a thin, flexible membrane and having a tapered portion and a cylindrical portion. The tapered portion engages the base of the patient's penis and the cylindrical portion is folded over the tapered portion to provide additional sealing force and to extend outwardly to form a surge chamber. According to the disclosed method, the tapered portion is first moved over the glans penis to a position on the base of the penis. The cylindrical portion is then folded over the tapered portion to provide the surge chamber.

Abstract: An improved external catheter for incontinent males. The external catheter consists of three interrelated components. A generally tubular sheath having a fluid drainage tube connection at one end and a reinforcing ring at the other is adapted to fit over the penis with the ring at the base of the penis. A frusto-conical seal of elastic material having a reinforcing ring at the base end is adapted to fit within the sheath with the ring at the base of the penis adjacent to the sheath ring. The wall of the frustom extends along the penis in snug engagement therewith. A nether garment to be worn by the patient has a penis-receiving hole surrounded by a pair of collars separated by a flange. A first collar extends exterior of the garment and a second collar is positioned adjacent the base of the penis. Each collar has a circular channel means with the channel opening extending outwardly away from the penis.

Abstract: A noninvasive urinary drainage device is described which includes a urethral tube with a slanted upper end shaped to seal against the urethral area of a female user. This tube serves to support two stacked discs, each of which is flat, plate-like, and flexible. These two discs are configured to mechanically engage the labia minora and majora of the user. The lower end of the urethral tube is secured to a drainage tube adapted to conduct urine away from the user into a suitable receptacle. The urethral tube is held in place on the user by means of a pad which is provided with an indentation shaped to receive the larger of the two discs. This pad is formed of an absorbent material and can, for example, be held in place by means of a suitable belt. The ends of the pad are formed by an elastic net which supplies a gentle, even pressure holding the urinary drainage device in place.

Abstract: A heat producing apparatus includes a plastic container having flexible walls which are interconnected along a linear zone or zones; a supercooled salt solution is in the container, to be triggered and crystallized, to produce heat; and a trigger floats in the solution relative to the linear zone, and includes a bendable trigger strip, and a multiple member frame confining the strip, the frame and trigger movable together, relative to the linear zone or zones.

Abstract: A liquid drainage system comprising, a urine meter comprising a first container having a compartment to receive the liquid, and a second container having a cavity alongside the first container, with the first container having an opening adjacent an upper portion of the first container communicating between the compartment and cavity to permit passage of liquid between the compartment and cavity. The system has a receptacle having a chamber supported below the urine meter, a first conduit communicating between the compartment and receptacle chamber, and a second conduit communicating between the cavity and the receptacle chamber. The system has a device for simultaneously opening and closing the first and second conduits to empty the contents of the compartment and cavity into the receptacle chamber.

Abstract: Surgical catheter apparatus for catheterized intraocular irrigation and aspiration, and a method of use are provided. The apparatus has an elongated body comprising an aspiration tube and an irrigation tube in double-barrel relation for transport of fluid, each tube having proximal and distal portions in which the distal portion is curved in a compound curve comprising both lateral curvature and transverse curvature. The distal portion includes an aspiration port and an irrigation port, the aspiration port being end-located and spaced on the curvature away from the irrigation port.

Abstract: A liquid collection system comprising, a drainage container having a chamber for collection of liquid therein, and a flexible tubular section communicating with a lower portion of the chamber. The system has a clamp on the tubular section for releasably closing the tubular section. The system also has an antiseptic device secured to an outer end of the tubular section, with the device having an annular wall defining a cavity, at least one well for capturing liquid adjacent an outer end of the cavity, and a pocket for capturing liquid adjacent an inner end of the cavity. The device has a capsule in the cavity containing an antiseptic agent.

Abstract: A waste retaining bag 10 for sealingly adhering to the body of a user around a stoma through which body waste issues includes an inlet 11 for waste and a seal arrangement which comprises two laminae 13, 15, bonded one to each side of a relatively thick resiliently deformable ring 14. Lamina 13 is attached to the bag adjacent the inlet 11 and lamina 15 is provided with an adhesive coating for adhering to the body of a user.

Abstract: A female incontinence device having a pair of deflectable walls defining a groove at the periphery of the device intended to contact the wearer. The device as seen in plan has a waisted or 8-shaped configuration and the deflectable walls as seen in side elevation have sealing edges each of which is constituted by a pair of continuous curves, one on each side of the central longitudinal axis of the device and which extend from a high point at the front of the device to a high point at the rear of the device. An undercut region is located beneath the deflectable walls to limit any splashing of discharged urine. A gasket or adhesive material can be disposed within the groove.

Abstract: A condom comprises an elongated generally tubular member of thin, flexible material and having an elongated opening provided along at least a substantial portion of the length of the elongated tubular member so as to facilitate placing the elongated tubular member over a flaccid penis. The elongated tubular member may contain a plurality of compartments, each of which contains rheopexic material so that the condom stiffens in use. A slide fastener closure device is provided for closing the elongated opening after placing the condom on a flaccid penis. Further disclosed is an elongated generally tubular member containing rheopexic material for use as an implanted penile prosthesis which stiffens upon agitation.

Abstract: A fluid collection bag has a front panel, a back panel, and closed left and right sides. The bag has a first opening, an upper chamber, and a lower chamber. The bag has a screening means between the upper chamber and the lower chamber which is a line of adherence between the front panel and the back panel extending from the left side to the right side of the bag. The line of adherence has nonadhered gaps therein.

Abstract: A self-contained, independently operable closed wound suction evacuator which is comprised of a box-like internal body structure disposed within a fluid tight, flexible outer pouch. The pouch includes an inlet/outlet valve for providing communication between the interior of the pouch and the atmosphere of the interior of the pouch and a drainage tube. The box-like internal body structure is capable of being in an engaged position or in a disengaged position. In the disengaged position, the internal box-like structure can remain in a flat condition without causing the tensioning member to be stretched or activated. When ready for use, the internal structure can be manually expanded into its box-like structure. When fully expanded the internal structure will become engaged, hence engaging the tensioning member. Subsequent compression of the internal structure to its flat position stretches the tensioning member and activates the evacuator.

Abstract: A device for collecting urine from an incontinent patient includes two synthetic resin foils having enlarged portions and narrow, neck-like portions projecting therefrom. These foils are registered in superimposed relation and sealed around the enlarged portions and along the edges of the neck-like portions to define a flexible receptacle for urine between the enlarged portions and a duct between the neck-like portions. A one way valve and an external catheter are in fluid connection with one end of the duct and through the duct with the receptacle. The device is attached to the patient's leg and the inner wall of the duct in contact with the user's leg is of smaller width than the outer wall of the duct so that the outer wall is in flaccid, collapsed condition against the inner wall but may flex away from the inner wall to define a passage for urine into the receptacle.

Abstract: A flexible mask includes a container for triggering of salt crystallization. The mask is manipulated to prevent stiffening, so as to be closely fitted to a human face to transmit heat thereto for therapeutic purposes.

Abstract: A disposal relief container for the collection and disposal of fecal material from the natural excremental passage ways of the human body comprising a gas permeable, flexible, fluid tight outer container, a flexible fluid tight inner container disposed within the outer container, the inner container having an opening coincidental with the opening of the outer container, a planer, pliable annular surface about the opening of the outer container, such annular surface having an adhesive means attached thereto to secure the disposal relief container to the human body, a plurality of air vents disposed on the inner container to permit the gaseous communication from the inner container to the atmosphere through the air vents and the gas permeable outer container and an adhesive means for securing the relief container in a closed condition after use for disposal or storage.
