    Abstract: A transfer machine for cutting rolled sheet metal comprises a sheet loading arrangement, a feed mechanism for moving a sheet to the blades of guillotine shears, an arrangement for sorting and stacking cut-off blanks, and a program control system. The sheet loading arrangement comprises a receiving table which is fixedly mounted and located on the axis of the transfer machine, and a four-member linkwork with a sheet grip. The linkwork is constructed so as to provide for transferring a sheet from a stack onto the table of the feed mechanism along the axis of the machine, the sheet remaining parallel to the table of the feed mechanism during the transfer. Fitted on the table of the feed mechanism is a sensor responsive to the passage of the rearward sheet edge. This sensor provides for measuring the dimensions of blanks from the rearward sheet edge on the reverse stroke of the feed mechanism.

The stop collar has a stop surface, and yieldably resilient means in the form of a threaded screw passing through a slot in the collar, and rubberized buttons inserted into the collar are used to adjust the collar on the cutting tool, and to operatively connect it thereto so as not to damage its groove; the cutting depth of the tool is limited when the stop face engages with the stop surface.

The cutting cylinder is adapted to be mounted adjacent a conventional, unmodified anvil cylinder and preferably includes an inwardly and axially extending, tapered bottom, slug-receiving slot or groove and a pair of slug-cutting peripheral knives mounted on opposite sides of the slot; a vacuum slug-removal system is coupled in communication with the slot for removing cut slugs without the necessity of any moving parts which can limit collator output and substantially increase equipment costs.

    Abstract: Selected lengths of a strip of material are cut either continuously in an automatic mode or each selected length is cut in a manual mode by manual activation of a switch. When the thickness of the strip of the material being cut exceeds a predetermined thickness or is less than a predetermined thickness, this difference is sensed so that this portion of the strip of the material is cut as soon as it ceases to exceed the predetermined thickness or be less than the predetermined thickness. In the automatic mode, automatic cutting may be stopped after this portion of different thickness has been cut either every time or every other time, and manual activation is required to start another automatic cutting.

    Abstract: A portable saw guide for operation in combination with a hand operable saw. The saw guide comprises a base member adapted for clamping to an elongated horizontally disposed workpiece supporting surface wherein a first portion of the base member extends transversely under the supporting surface while a second portion is disposed to one side thereof. A pin is rotatively associated with the second portion of the base member and includes a head section for pivotally receiving one end of an elongated guide blade. The guide blade is swingable between a substantially vertical position and a substantially horizontal position overlying the workpiece wherein the guide blade is rotatable with the pin so as to overlie the workpiece at any selected angle relative thereto. Means are also provided for locking the pin to maintain the guide blade at the selected angle.

    Abstract: A roll slicing machine in which disc knives are fixed to one end of vertical shafts inserted in driving sleeves supported in bearing blocks on the machine is provided with a chuck unit connected to the upper end of the driving sleeves, above the bearing blocks, and said chuck units each comprise a head secured to the upper end of said driving sleeves and having a bore complementary to the upper ends of the knife shafts. The upper ends of the knife shafts are provided with a notch in one side thereof which is wider and deeper at one end than the other and said heads are provided with a transverse bore which receives a plug for axial movement of a frusto-conical section on said plug into and out of wedging engagement with said notch in said knife shaft with which said secton is substantially complementary in shape. Several embodiments of actuating structures are provided for moving said plug into and out of said wedging engagement of the frusto-conical sections with said notches in said knife shafts.

One guide rib is diametrically opposite the cutting edge, and the other one is much nearer to the cutting edge than to the other rib so that the angular center-to-center spacing of the two ribs is bisected by the resultant force defined by the circumferential cutting force exerted by the cutting edge on a body of mild steel during reaming at a cutting speed of 5 to 100 meters per minute and at an axial feed rate of 0.1 to 0.5 mm per revolution, and the radially inward force of reaction acting on the cutting blade during the reaming.

    Abstract: For band saw machines, a replaceable surface band wheel is disclosed wherein a helical groove is machined in the peripheral surface of a substantially conventional disk-shaped band wheel of the flanged type to extend from the rear face flange to the non-flanged front face of the band wheel. A wire is wound about the peripheral surface such that the wraps of wire lie in the helical groove and extend radially above the peripheral surface. The wire, so placed, forms an inexpensive replaceable cutting band contact surface. The depth and pitch of the helical groove and the wire size are selected to insure that the wire extends partially above the peripheral surface and to provide space between adjacent wraps of wire so that during cutting operations cutting chips and scale which might otherwise loosen the wire or cause abrasive wear to the band wheel peripheral surface are forced temporarily into the spaces between the wraps of wire.

    Abstract: An improved flying saw of simplified and more economical construction is disclosed which operates smoothly with reduced vibration and which performs in an improved manner at higher operating speeds. The machine has a main crank arm with a rotary saw blade at one end and an adjustable counterweight at the opposite end, a stabilizing crank arm with a counterweight, and a connecting rod causing the arms to rotate in unison. Both arms telescope to permit simultaneous adjustments of arm radius while screw jacks adjust the height of the crank axis relative to the work. The work is supported on a wheel having a special sliding-block eccentric which moves the wheel in a vertical direction to deflect the work into the path of the rotary saw blade. A quickdrop support bracket permits lowering of the wheel and its eccentric away from the path of the work in an emergency situation so that flow from the mill need not be interrupted.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a spiral saw blade wherein the teeth are divided into two or more groups with gaps or cut-outs between the groups of teeth, such gaps or cut-outs being void of teeth. The gaps or cut-outs are disposed diametrally opposite each other on the spiral saw blade, and, hence, on rotation the centrifugal forces go through the middle point of the saw blade and their maximum values are directed toward the groups of teeth respectively. Also, the invention provides teeth of varying heights with the first tooth of each group of least height and each succeeding tooth of progressively higher height, with a magnitude of height of the lowest compared to the highest no more than 2% of the diameter of the saw blade. The invention also provides a reinforcing salient in front of the first tooth of each tooth group which protects the first tooth from excessive stresses.
