  • Patent number: 5431214
Abstract: A cooling mold has first and second water cooling jackets provided inside the mold. A primary cooling water jetting mouth is located at a distance between 15 and 40 mm from the meniscus of the molten metal. A secondary cooling water jetting mouth is located at an interval of 20 to 45 mm between a contact point of a primary jet of cooling water and another contact point of a secondary jet of cooling water on an ingot. The primary and secondary cooling water jetting mouths are respectively set at an angle of 15 to 30 degrees and of 30 to 60 degrees relative to the ingot surface. The primary jet of cooling water from the primary mouth impinges on the molten metal cooled in the cooling mold at a distance from the meniscus to establish a transition boiling zone and a film boiling zone. The secondary jet of cooling water impinges on initial zones of the transition boiling zone and the film boiling zone to break-out a vapor film.

  • Patent number: 5429173
Abstract: A solid material is bonded to a metal cast thereagainst by means of a metallurgical diffusion bond. The solid material is coated with a latent exoergic coating which coating reacts exothermically to produce intermetallic phases at the surface of the solid when the metal is cast thereagainst. The heat generated by the intermetallic-phase-formation reaction promotes the diffusion bond.

  • Patent number: 5427171
Abstract: The apparatus includes a wheel mold that has a top segment having a plurality of openings formed therethrough. Movable cores are carried in the top segment openings. A mechanism is mounted on the top segment to alternately extend the cores into the mold cavity and retract the cores into the openings. To form a wheel, the movable cores are extended and molten metal is introduced into the mold cavity. The movable cores form recesses in the resulting wheel casting. After casting has cooled sufficiently, the movable cores are retracted from the recesses allowing the top segment to be withdrawn from the wheel casting. The casting is then removed from the mold.

  • Patent number: 5427170
Abstract: A vacuum casting apparatus includes a plurality of pressure pins arranged in a molding cavity, and at least one pressure pin is located in a portion of the molding cavity farthest from a gate. The pressure pins are operated to pressurize the molding cavity in an order from the pressure pin located farthest from the gate to a pressure pin located nearest to the gate. A cross-sectional area reduced portion can also be formed in a portion of a runner connecting the molding cavity and the molten metal retaining dome. A molten metal in the molding cavity is thereby suppressed from flowing backward into the molten metal retaining dome when being pressurized by the pressure pins, so that the quality of the cast products is improved.

  • Patent number: 5409052
Abstract: Sand is charged into two spaces defined by a match plate, a pair of flasks, and a pair of squeeze plates, and is then compressed by moving the squeeze plates in the flasks toward the match plate to form the cope and drag molds. The properties of the molding sand are detected during the forming of the molds in order to suitably adjust the sand and the device. The device includes linear encoders connected to the squeeze plates so as to detect the amounts of the movements of the squeeze plates, and an electrode penetrating one squeeze plate so as to detect the electric resistance or the water-content value of the mold in the flask.

  • Patent number: 5409053
Abstract: The mold includes a mold tube having pairs of parallel opposed outer surface portions which extend axially of the mold tube. The mold tube defines an axial casting passage having an inlet end for molten metal and an outlet end for a continuously cast strand of the metal. The mold tube is provided with internal concavities which are uniformly distributed peripherally of the casting passage. The internal concavities, which extend in a direction from the inlet end towards the outlet end, become smaller in this direction and are designed so that the strand is shaped as it travels along the casting passage. To form the mold tube, external concavities are impressed or cut in a tubular blank and a mandrel with external protuberances is then pressed into the blank. If necessary, the tubular blank can thereafter be drawn or otherwise processed to produce the desired outer contour of the mold tube.

  • Patent number: 5404928
Abstract: In a vacuum casting method, a mold cavity is reduced in pressure to a vacuum, and when a gate is opened, a molten metal which has been raised to a molten metal retaining dome is charged into the cavity at a high speed. When a portion of a molten metal held in a molten metal holding furnace is raised to the molten metal retaining dome, an upper surface of the molten metal is moved downwardly and upwardly through at least one cycle in the molten metal retaining dome, or a swirl flow is generated in the molten metal in a stalk. Such a unique motion as the downward and upward motion or the swirl flow effectively operates to detach solid metal pieces from an inside surface of the molten metal retaining dome or the stalk to push them to an upper portion of the molten metal. As a result, the detached metal pieces are prevented from being charged into the mold cavity to thereby cause defects in a cast product.

  • Patent number: 5398750
Abstract: The machine includes a train of molds moving through an arcuate pouring zone, a supply vessel for the metal, a trough extending between the vessel and the mold trains to convey the metal therebetween. The metal is discharged from beneath the surface of the metal in the vessel and into one end of the trough beneath the surface of the metal therein. The other end of the trough is registered with a mold in the trains and moves with the trains while metal is dispensed into the mold from beneath the surface of the metal in the trough. Valves control the discharging and dispensing of the metal to and from the trough. A motor moves the trough, as needed, in the pouring cycle, and a coupler coordinates the movement of the trough and the mold to keep them registered in the pouring zone.
