  • Patent number: 5857513
Abstract: The assembly includes plural independently operated rotating shafts that contact the sand fill. As the fill is introduced into a first end of the vertical chute, the speed and rotational direction of the shafts with accompanying tines are controlled to regulate the feed rate and discharge of the fill to a molding chamber. This arrangement provides a more uniform density in the molding chamber which, in turn, results in improved quality in the cast product.

  • Patent number: 5855238
Abstract: A mother strip with a metallically pure surface is passed through a melt bath of a metal and whereby the coating is smoothed by rolling immediately after leaving the melt bath. The mother strip, having been preheated, to a temperature clearly above ambient temperature, especially above 200.degree. C., is introduced into the metal bath. The preheating is carried out by indirect heat exchange with the melt bath in an oxygen-free environment. The melt freshly supplied to the melt bath has an increased temperature in accordance with the heat lost due to preheating.

  • Patent number: 5853043
Abstract: A thin slab that is free of internal cracks is formed by reducing a continuously cast strand having a liquid core. The placement of the reduction rolls is controlled to effect a suitable amount of reduction. The methods effectively reduce bulging strain, as well as strain associated with reduction of the strand. As a result, total accumulated strain is reduced and a thin slab free of internal cracks can be manufactured at high speeds. The apparatus includes reduction blocks which are capable of shifting the rotation angle of an upper roller segment frame. Misalignment strain is reduced and the thickness of the strand can be changed without stopping the manufacturing operation.

  • Patent number: 5853042
Abstract: The drag flask has at least two opposed sides which include recesses proximate the matchplate. Manifolds are provided in the recesses to communicate compressed air from a source of compressed air to air inlets provided in the manifold. The manifolds are separated from the recesses using an elastomeric seal which is contoured to direct the compressed air between an air passage disposed between the drag mold and the matchplate. When incorporated into a sand mold forming machine, sensors are positioned on the sand mold forming machine to detect when the drag flask has reached a releasing position to thereby cause the source of compressed air to inject air into the manifold and air passage for release of the drag mold from the drag flask.

  • Patent number: 5850871
Abstract: An improved continuous casting mold and foot guide assembly includes a mold having a casting passage defined therein, a frame member, mounting structure for mounting the frame member to the mold for relative movement toward and away from an axis of the casting passage, and a strand support member for providing support to a strand of continuously cast material as it emerges from the casting passage. Biasing structure is provided for biasing the frame member toward the axis of the casting passage and, advantageously, is positioned so as not to occupy space that is behind the frame member. As a result, the assembly is compatible with all models of casting machines and will be less susceptible to degradation as a result of radiant heat and steam that is emitted from the strand during operation. In addition, a load cell is provided for monitoring the amount of relative force between the frame member and the strand during operation.

  • Patent number: 5850870
Abstract: Balance beams are pivotally mounted on and crosswise of an elongated rack extending parallel to a trough over a series of mold cavities, valve closure devices are suspended from corresponding first end portions of the beams to throttle valve openings in the trough, float sensors are suspended from points on the opposing second end portions of the beams to contact the surfaces of molten metal columns brought to a state of equilibrium in the cavities, and the rack is elevated in relation to the cavities as molten metal is delivered to the trough, so that as the first end portions impose a desired value on the rate at which the surfaces escalate up the axes of the cavities, the second end portions elevate the suspension points for the sensors at a rate commensurate therewith, to assure that the input signals transmitted to the first portions through the fulcra for the beams, are consistent with the imposed value.

  • Patent number: 5842510
Abstract: In a method for applying a powder state mold lubricant onto a die-casting mold, a movable mother die and a stationary mother die are clamped to define a mold cavity with a movable insert die and a stationary insert die, in which a plunger tip slidably arranged within a sleeve opens a molten material supply hole, and communication between the sleeve and the mold cavity is blocked. A pressure within the mold cavity is reduced by opening a powder suction passage opening into the mold cavity and establishing communication between a powder discharge passage communicated with a powder storage source and a molten material supply passage opening to the mold cavity. The powder state mold lubricant is directly within the powder storage source into the mold cavity via the molten material supply passage for applying the powder state mold lubricant on the mold surface of the mold cavity.

  • Patent number: 5839497
Abstract: An interior cooling inner plunger is caused to project from an outer plunger after casting. Alternatively, during casting, while it projects from the outer plunger, the inner plunger is inserted into a frustoconical gate. Subsequently, a pressure pin is moved downward from a movable mold side to a portion near a gate portion. When a melt solidifies, a casting sleeve and a casting plunger are moved downward, and a pressure pin is further moved downward to cut apart a biscuit from a mold product. An excellent product is produced and the cycle time is shortened by a good melt pushing operation.

  • Patent number: 5836373
Abstract: In a string of molds (32) with vertical parting surfaces, each mold cavity (35) is connected through a wide throat with its own after-feeding reservoir (36). When the mold has been poured, a gas pressure is applied through a channel (43) and a passage (41) to a lower metal surface in the after-feeding reservoir (36). This gas pressure is not allowed to exceed the metallostatic pressure in the mold at the surface, at which the pressure is applied, until the metal in the ingate (37) has solidified or the ingate has been blocked in some other way. At the location where the passage (41) opens into the after-feeding reservoir, it is covered by an element (42) that is impermeable to the metal having been poured but permeable to the pressurized gas. When the metal in the ingate (37) has solidified or the ingate has been blocked in some other way, the gas pressure may be increased.
