  • Patent number: 6033672
Abstract: The present invention provides a vaccine comprising a caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) immunogen and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The invention also provides a method of stimulating an immune response in an individual against human immunodeficiency virus-1 infection or against CAEV infection by administering a therapeutically effective amount of a CAEV immunogen to the individual. The invention further provides a method of stimulating an immune response in vitro by contacting a lymphocyte with a therapeutically effective amount of a CAEV immunogen.

  • Patent number: 6029679
Abstract: By employing a cleaning method wherein a substrate such as Si wafer is covered with a film having electrostatic repulsive force or a substance capable of controlling a zeta potential so as to prevent or remarkably reduce adhesion of fine particles present in a cleaning solution or etching solution, electronic parts can be produced in higher yield and lower cost.

  • Patent number: 6024922
Abstract: The claimed invention provides an improved oxygen analyzer of the Hersch galvanic type that is suitable for measuring oxygen concentrations of 1 part per million (ppm) or less in a feed gas, as well as, methods of regulating said analyzer. Modifications have been made to the instrument, or its attendant supporting structures, that reduce or eliminate problems associated with the back flow of gas due to pressure differences between pipes for entrance and egress gases, problems associated with dead zones in the apparatus, or problems associated with dissolved oxygen present in water supplied to the detector. These problems have been addressed by modifying the instrument and its attendant structures, inter alia, to include a bypass pipe coupling between a pipe for gas supply to a detector and a pipe at gas outlet, including a check valve halfway between said bypass coupling, and providing means for detecting the pressure differential between a gas supply pipe and gas outlet pipe.

  • Patent number: 6022683
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for the determining the appropriate therapy and/or prognosis for a patient diagnosed with a non-Alzheimer's disease (AD) neurological disease based upon the patient's apoE allele load. The invention also provides a method for the identification of human subjects with a non-AD neurological disease that are likely to respond in clinical trials that test pharmaceuticals useful in the treatment of neurological diseases.

  • Patent number: 6015583
Abstract: A package which allows for butchering and packaging of a fresh red meat product at a centralized facility is provided. The package includes a support member which contains the product; a first, preferably permeable film sealed to the support member for enclosing the product; a second, preferably impermeable film enclosing the first film and removably secured to the package; and labeling means including a label removably affixed to an outer surface of the support member. Upon removal of the second film, the label may be removed from the outer surface of the support member and adhered to the first film, thereby providing a package labeled with individualized information relating to the particular product.

  • Patent number: 5987977
Abstract: A device for determining the abnormal degree of deterioration of catalyst of a catalytic converter arranged in an internal combustion engine exhaust system is disclosed. The device comprises ability value grasping means for grasping an ability value in relation with a current purification ability of the catalyst and varying amount grasping means for grasping a varying amount of the ability value grasped by the ability value grasping means. It is determined that the degree of deterioration of the catalyst is abnormal when the varying amount grasped by the varying amount grasping means is smaller than a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 5981507
Abstract: Novel compositions of nucleotide analog prodrugs for the treatment of viral infections and cancer are herein disclosed. The prodrugs have a biocompatible polymeric carrier conjugated to the nucleotide analog via an amino-phosphate linkage. The amino group is provided by the carrier, which either inherently possesses a primary amine, or is modified with reactive groups that incorporate the primary amine onto the carrier. The carrier can be a polyamino acid, a polyvinylic polymer, a polysaccharide or combinations thereof, such as polylysine, HPMA, dextran, hydroxyethyl starch, or polyethylene glycol; the nucleotide analog can be ribavirin araA, AZT, acyclovir, 5-FUDR, araC or ddI. Methods of treating a viral infection of cancer using these prodrugs are also disclosed. The prodrugs endow the nucleotide analogs with substantially enhanced therapeutic efficacy and reduces toxicity in comparison to the nucleotide analog alone.
