  • Patent number: 5509994
Abstract: A tie gun for tying elongated bundles with a polymeric material tape loop, the loop having overlapped tape lengths, the overlapped material being welded with an ultra sonic horn, this horn embodying a horn tip end which with a clamp, and an anvil arrangement holds the loop in such way that a tape stock section just upstream of the weldment is weakened by horn operation disrupting at least some of the molecular orientation in the material so that the stock can be separated from the loop with an upstream directed pulling force applied to the tape stock resulting in a severance that leaves no objectionable protuberance or tab at the weldment. The tie gun also includes a quick release for freeing a tape build up in the gun incident a tape feed jam. A face of the clamp, face surfaces of the anvils and the horn tip end define a funnel envelope to facilitate tape stock feed to tape loop forming jaws on the gun at the outset of a tying cycle.

  • Patent number: 5501765
Abstract: A heat-sealing apparatus includes a casing, a pair of lower and upper binding members for vertically binding a portion of a heat-fusible wrapper therebetween, a heater attached to a binding face of the lower binding member which is in turn fixed to the casing. The heater is operable to heat-fuse the portion of the wrapper. The apparatus further includes a switching mechanism for switching over the upper binding member between a binding position where the upper binding member is pressed against the binding face of the lower binding member and a releasing position where the upper binding member is retracted in an upper-rear direction away from the binding face of the lower binding member. The upper binding member is a heat-resistant elastic pressing roller rotatable about an axis extending along a length of the heater.

  • Patent number: 5492581
Abstract: Holding means for a component in a friction welding operation consists of a hollow cassette which is open at one end. The component is inserted into the cassette through an aperture at the open end that is shaped to frictionally engage a thickened portion of the component with a force greater than forces transmitted to the component during a friction welding operation. The component is pressed into the cassette to a predetermined depth so that a portion of it protrudes and forms the weld interface. Material upset during the welding operation may be sheared by increasing the weld generating force to overcome the frictional holding force so the end face passes over the weld region.

  • Patent number: 5490900
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the continuous application of surface cover foils to the surfaces of particle boards wherein the particle board is surfaced and roughened as it leaves a double band press in which it is manufactured. A grinding and roughening tool includes a carrier studded with grinding crystals which carrier is pressed against the surface of the particle board by pressurized air while it is oscillated in a direction normal to the movement of the particle board. Subsequently, decorative foils taken from rolls are applied to the particle board surfaces and attached thereto under heat and pressure while the particle board with the decorative foils thereon is moved through an isobaric double band press.

  • Patent number: 5487802
Abstract: In an ultrasonic welding method and apparatus for molded resin materials, molded resin materials, whose corresponding parts to be welded to each other have been superposed one upon the other, are held between a welding horn and a molded material receiving section, and the corresponding parts of the molded resin materials are welded to each other with an ultrasonic welding process. A plurality of parts of the molded material receiving section are supported independently of each other by a plurality of receiving section support members. When the corresponding parts of the molded resin materials are welded to each other, the supporting forces of the plurality of the receiving section support members are adjusted independently of each other such that a welding pressure applied by the welding horn onto each pair of the corresponding parts of the molded resin materials may become equal to a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 5476569
Abstract: A tool for frictionally welding and binding art overlapped part of thermoplastic strap wound about an object by an vibrator. In order to horizontally vibrate the vibrator, an upper part of flange of the vibrator is abutted to a lower part of needle holder, a lower part of the flange is engaged with an elastic member, and the vibrator is lowered by direct pressure of needle holder, and lifted by the elastic member. Thus, by the leading end of vibrator that is horizontally vibrated, an upper strap is vibrated in the direction of width against a lower strap, while applying a pressure to the overlapped strap part, and the overlapped strap part is frictionally welded.

  • Patent number: 5476570
Abstract: To weld together thermoplastic foils to form folders or binder jackets (1), in which the thermoplastic material is difficult to weld by externally supplied heat, an ultrasonic generator is coupled to a plurality of sonotrodes (41), assembled in a sonotrode system (17), against which a welding head (16) is reciprocated, with the foils (24) between the welding head and the sonotrode system (17). The sonotrodes are excited by ultrasonic energy, and secured to a machine frame (14) by attachment posts (45, 45') which are coupled to the sonotrodes (41) or the machine frame (14), respectively, at locations where the sonotrodes or the posts, respectively, have wave nodes when excited to ultrasonic oscillations, so that, effectively, no ultrasonic energy is coupled to the machine frame.

  • Patent number: 5474633
Abstract: A heat applied transfer press includes a manual actuator for displacing platens between open and closed positions as well as a pneumatic engager for pressing the platens together when the actuator has been moved to the closed position. A sensor determines when the actuator has moved the upper platen to the closed position so as to permit application of pressure to urge the heated upper platen toward and against transfer indicia and the apparel arranged on the lower platen. Another sensor determines when the pressure application has been initiated to time the duration of the pressure application. The control automatically releases the pressure and opens the press after the time duration matches a selected time duration set by the control.

  • Patent number: 5472556
Abstract: A simple combination of conventional operations uses a twin press configuration of tandem stationary, vertically acting heating and cooling platen presses in separate frames which share a fixed, hybrid bottom platen in a laminating machine. The machine therefore has aligned daylight openings ("daylights"). A set of sheets to be laminated is sandwiched between cover plates of a book which is loaded by rollingly transferring it with an edge-conveyor means, into the heating press. The path in which the book is processed ("process-path") starts at an entrance station and progresses linearly through the daylights. The system operates with a minimum cycle time based on the physical properties of the sheets to be laminated. Successive books may be loaded, in a machine using only two single daylight openings; or, in ganged single daylights; depending upon the capacity per unit time sought. A novel quick-locking carrier is provided in which a sandwich to be laminated is held.

  • Patent number: 5470427
Abstract: A system is shown and described wherein a portable printer is used to produce tags for attachment to mail trays. The printer is uploaded with plans that are the same as sort plans stored in the memory of a sorting machine with which the printer is to be used. The same sort plan that is selected for operation of the sorting machine will be input into the printer so that tags can be printed and attached to mail trays on an as needed basis. These tags can be colored coded so that the targeted day of delivery of the mail can be indicated. Act tags can be printed by scanning the mail tray tags.

  • Patent number: 5470428
Abstract: A simple combination of conventional operations uses a twin press configuration of tandem stationary, vertically acting heating and cooling platen presses in separate frames of a laminating machine which is loaded by rollingly transferring a book into the heating press in either of two loading-paths. One is at right angles to the path in which the book is to be processed ("process-path") so as to avoid using an entrance station. The other uses an entrance station which provides a loading-path parallel to the processing path through daylight openings ("daylights") in the presses, so as to support each book on the edge-conveyor means while it is stationary and coplanar with the loading-path. The system operates with a minimum cycle time based on the physical properties of the sheets to be laminated.
