  • Patent number: 7274927
Abstract: A WAP enabled mobile telephone handset (MS 1) can access WAP servers using a browser which is located at a remote phone server (1). Image data produced by the browser at the phone server is converted into a bitmapped image that is sent to the handset for display. The browser at the phone server (1) can also be accessed through a personal computer (PC 1). The browser settings remain synchronized irrespective of whether the handset (MS 1) or (PC 1) is utilized. The phone server can also run other applications such as calendars, address books and computer games.

  • Patent number: 7272404
Abstract: A first transceiver (4, 30) can position itself by forming an ad hoc network (20) of transceivers which assist the first transceiver in acquiring its position. A dedicated infrastructure such as GPS satellites is not required. The first transceiver (4, 30), once it has acquired its position, can be involved in a network (20) by another transceiver (32, 34, 36, 38, 40) to assist in the positioning of that transceiver. The acquisition of the position may involve factors such as the trustworthiness of the transceivers in the network and/or the positions of transceivers with which the first transceiver cannot directly communicate.

  • Patent number: 7269421
Abstract: The uplink transmission timing from a mobile communications device is defined with reference to the downlink reception timing of signals from a particular reference cell. When that reference cell is removed from the active set, there is defined a virtual reference cell, the timing of which is defined with reference to one or more of the cells remaining in the active set, such that the timing of this new virtual reference cell corresponds to the timing of the previous reference cell. The timing of the uplink transmission from the user equipment are then defined with reference to the new virtual reference cell, in the conventional way. This has the advantage that, following a soft handover, it is not necessary to adjust the timing of uplink transmissions from the user equipment.

  • Patent number: 7263366
Abstract: At the time of a normal operation, a second channel change message 30b is transmitted from the AP to each terminal before a time T0 until a channel change that is included in a first channel change message 30a elapses, thereby all terminals that received this message 30b, and the AP stop changing the channel. At the time of interference occurrence, setting a time until a channel change to be filed in a third channel change message 30d to a time equal to or less than a lapse time until the channel change at the time point of transmitting this message 30d to transmit it to each terminal from the AP allows the terminal that failed to receive the message at the time of the interference occurrence to make a channel change without causing a connection to the AP to be disconnected.

  • Patent number: 7257414
Abstract: A technique for estimating the location of a wireless terminal at an unknown location in a geographic region is disclosed. The technique is based on the recognition that there are traits of electromagnetic signals that are dependent on topography, the receiver, the location of the transmitter, and other factors. For example, if a particular radio station is known to be received strongly at a first location and weakly at a second location, and a given wireless terminal at an unknown location is receiving the radio station weakly, it is more likely that the wireless terminal is at the second location than at the first location.

  • Patent number: 7251471
Abstract: An emergency-use-only cellular phone provides for contacting and establishing full-duplex voice communication with emergency personnel at either a public emergency response service or a private roadside assistance service. The phone automatically places a cellular call to the public emergency response service with a single press of a first activation button, and to the private roadside assistance service with a single press of a second activation button. When either activation button is pressed, the following functions are initiated: (1) electrical power from a power supply is provided to a cellular transmitter and receiver, (2) the cellular receiver is activated to search for an available channel from among A or B cellular system channels, (3) an emergency telephone number corresponding to the selected service is accessed from memory, and (4) the cellular transmitter is activated to establish communication with the selected emergency response service.

  • Patent number: 7248864
Abstract: A system and method is described for managing a phone call to a phone device of a personal digital assistant, the phone call being transmitted from a device in a mobile phone network. In one example, the method involves determining a status of a radio switch of the personal digital assistant. The personal digital assistant determines a status of the network coverage of the phone device. In other words, the personal digital assistant determines the relative strength of the phone call signal that is transmitted to the phone device from the mobile phone network. If the radio switch is turned on and the network coverage is adequate, the phone device receives the phone call. A user of the personal digital assistant preferably has an option of answering or not answering the phone call. If the phone call is not answered, the phone call is preferably redirected to a voicemail application.

  • Patent number: 7228143
Abstract: A method of paging a mobile station to establish a packet-switched connection in a mobile telephone network that supports a circuit-switched connection and a packet-switched connection. To establish a mobile-terminated circuit-switched connection, the mobile telephone network sends the mobile station a page request, as a result of which the mobile station switches to standby mode for a circuit-switched connection. To save the batteries and to reduce the need of processing, the mobile station listens only to the paging channels of the circuit-switched connection. To establish a mobile-terminated packet-switched connection, the mobile telephone network sends the mobile station a page request via a circuit-switched connection and subsequently sends the mobile station the additional information commanding the mobile station to switch to a packet-switched connection. After detecting the additional information, the mobile station switches to the packet-switched connection.

  • Patent number: 7218955
Abstract: The purpose of the present invention is to provide a tilt angle deciding method and a system wherein tilt angles to diminish the deterioration rate of the entire system can be obtained in the radio communication system. The method comprises the steps of setting initial values of tilt angles; calculating the deterioration rate at the initial values of tilt angles; selecting an antenna for reducing a tilt angle; reducing the tilt angle of the selected antenna; calculating a deterioration rate at the time when the tilt angle is reduced; determining the continuity of repeating the processes, after repeating the series of processes for reducing these tilt angles, and increasing tilt angles repeatedly in the similar way. In addition, the method comprises the steps of outputting tilt angles for diminishing a small deterioration rate, and determining whether the processes of repeating the whole steps finish.

  • Patent number: 7215967
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method for rapid start-up of a Global Position System (GPS) receiver integrated with a mobile terminal is disclosed. The location of a reference GPS receiver associated with a Base Transceiver Station (BTS) within the cell that the mobile terminal is currently located is used as the local position estimate for that mobile terminal. The GSM TDMA frame numbers are first correlated with the GPS clock signal. Optionally, this correlation is adjusted using the adaptive frame alignment mechanism. This local position estimate is used to ascertain the location of the GPS receiver. The correlation data is then sent to the GPS-capable mobile terminal through the Short Messaging Service (SMS) cell broadcast facility or the Broadcast Control Channel (BCCH) facility of the GSM network to enable the built-in GPS receiver to calculate its position relatively quickly.
