  • Patent number: 6907269
Abstract: A mobile communication base station determines the oncoming direction of a radio wave with a simple arrangement and transmits a narrow angle beam in this direction. Received signals from a pair of wide angle beam antennae 21-1 and 21-2 having an equal configuration and a common orientation and which are located close to each other are fed to a direction finder receiver 22 and a communication receiver 15. By utilizing the fact that the both received signals have a coincident amplitude, a phase difference between the received signals is detected. The oncoming direction of the received radio wave (or the direction of a mobile station) is determined on the basis of the phase difference. A beam switcher 12 is controlled so as to connect a transmitter 13 to a narrow angle beam antenna (one of 11-1 to 11-4) which is directed in the oncoming direction thus determined.

  • Patent number: 6898419
Abstract: Remotely controllable actuators are provided to alter the cavity size of bandpass cavity filters to alter the bandpass characteristics. In one embodiment, a stepper motor is used to provide lateral movement of a tuning plate to alter the size of the cavity. The neck of the cavity is also changed in length through the use of a tuning motor. A feedback loop is used to provide fine tuning of the length of the neck in response to changes due to temperature and vibration to offer maximum propagation of the signal to be transmitted. A coupling tuner is used to adjust to the resulting change in Q to the cavity. A tuning processor is used to receive signals from a remote location identifying the desired characteristics of the filter.

  • Patent number: 6898442
Abstract: A wide-band array antenna using a single real-valued multiplier for each antenna element is simple in construction and suitable for wide-band code division multiple access (WCDMA) mobile communication systems. A rectangular array antenna is formed by N×M antenna elements. Each antenna element has a frequency dependent gain which is the same for all elements. Each antenna element is connected to said single real-valued multiplier with a single real-valued coefficient, which is determined by properly selecting a number of points on a u-v plane defined for simplifying the design procedure according to the selected design algorithm.

  • Patent number: 6834193
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for processing a traffic channel request in a cellular radio system. To ensure that the allocation of a new traffic channel would not disturb adjacent cells, the method comprises the steps of: calculating the number of traffic channels in use in a radio cell; measuring the quality of ongoing connections of adjacent cells using at least to some extent the same frequency channels as said radio cell; and preventing the traffic channel from being allocated to a mobile station from said radio cell if the number of traffic channels in use exceeds a predetermined threshold value and if in any of said adjacent cells the mean value of quality for ongoing connections is lower than a predetermined minimum quality value.

  • Patent number: 6795709
Abstract: Method and apparatus for dynamically allocating IP addresses in a wireless IP network. IP address servers determine the requisite IP address pools and guard bands for individual network cells to guarantee fair access to the network and facilitate handoff host handoff from a prior cell to a new cell. IP address servers also prioritize handoff and resident hosts that request an IP address from the IP address server. In particular, IP address servers assign a higher priority to handoff hosts over resident hosts that request an IP address from an IP address server in order to maintain a preestablished handoff host network connection instead of dropping a handoff host connection in favor of a new resident host network connection. Finally, each cell is allocated a minimum number of IP addresses to ensure a certain level of fair access to the network regardless of the cell wherein a handoff or resident host resides.

  • Patent number: 6754474
Abstract: In a transmission system, a modulator and a fractional frequency divider are introduced into the control loop of a voltage-controlled oscillator. It is shown that the benefit of this is a reduction in noise associated with the reduction of noise due to using a divider with a lower division coefficient. In one embodiment, the fractional divider is obtained by selecting different dividers in turn in accordance with temporal proportions corresponding to a required division fraction.

  • Patent number: 6754484
Abstract: A short messaging communication system for communicating short messages to a user located in an operating region of the system. Information beacons or beacons which function as store and forward devices operable in a corresponding local operating region communicate with terminal devices that are located within the local operating region. Short messages can be “private” messages wherein only specified recipients are permitted access, or “public” messages whose access is not limited to specific users. A message stored on a beacon can be retrieved by a recipient when the recipient's presence in the operating range is detected, whereupon the beacon will wirelessly transmit the message to the recipient device. For private messages, a password or other security access code may be required for input into the receiving device to decipher the received message.

  • Patent number: 6741865
Abstract: In the digital multi-subscriber radio telecommunication system which operates using frequency hopping technology and is intended for use in the 2.4 GHz ISM (Industrial Scientific and Medical) frequency band, in which a 20 dB channel bandwidth of a maximum of 1 MHz is prescribed, the known, DECT radio system operating using TDMA/FDMA technology is matched, in RF terms, to the ISM band and is modified such that the data transfer rate is reduced, preferably halved, by comparison with the data transfer rate of 1152 kbit/s, which is prescribed as standard for DECT. The system according to the invention can be used in cordless telephones.

  • Patent number: 6718169
Abstract: A method for determining a confidence limit for a telecommunication network element, whereby the number of data transmission connections established through the network element is stored into a database and a relative value as a ratio of the number of faulty operations in the network element to the number of data transmission connections is determined. A variable describing the relative number of faulty operations is assigned a target value for which a confidence limit is set, the deviation of the confidence limit from the target value changing in proportion to the number of the data transmission connections. The deviation of the confidence limit in relation to the target value becomes either smaller, in response to an increase in the number of data transmission connections, or larger, in response to a decrease in the number of data transmission connections. The confidence limits of the telecommunication network element can be updated automatically.

  • Patent number: 6714797
Abstract: A system, method and computer program for ordering, paying for and download digital products to a mobile device in a cost-effective manner. The mobile device includes a short range transceiver and a network transceiver. The mobile device accesses electronic shop server web sites which contain digital products for sale and hotspot network locations where these digital products may be downloaded to the mobile device via the short range transceiver. The hotspot network locations contain a hotspot device for transmitting the digital products to the mobile devices via the low power radio frequency signal of the short range transceivers when the mobile device has detected the low power radio frequency signal. Using this system, method and computer program, a user of a mobile device may download large amounts of digital data without incurring telephone or cellular phone charges.
