Abstract: A method of forming a glass article includes drawing a glass ribbon from a draw housing in a downstream direction, heating portions of only a bead of the glass ribbon to form compressive stress regions in the bead, scoring the glass ribbon to form a score line on which the glass ribbon is broken. The bead is heated at a position upstream from the score line. An apparatus for manufacturing a glass article includes a draw housing for forming a glass ribbon having a bead, a heating apparatus with a heat source for forming compressive stress regions in portions of only the bead of the glass ribbon, and a scoring apparatus that forms a score line on which the glass ribbon is broken to form the glass article. • Patent number: 9346696
Abstract: An oxygen-fuel burner for a glass-melting furnace generally includes a first (or inner) conduit for fuel, a second (or middle) conduit for waste glass cullet, and a third (or outer) conduit for combustion oxygen. The first, second, and third conduits are nested and define respective paths for fuel, cullet, and oxygen flows. A cullet supply funnel is coupled to the second conduit such that cullet can be introduced into the second conduit through the funnel. Organic contaminants in the waste glass cullet are incinerated in an almost pure oxygen environment proximate where cullet particles exit from the burner and prior to reaching the glass surface below.

  • Patent number: 9334187
Abstract: A reformable area and a non-reformable area of a sheet of glass material are heated to a first temperature corresponding to a first viscosity. The reformable area is subsequently locally heated to a second temperature corresponding to a second viscosity, where the second viscosity is lower than the first viscosity. A bend is formed in the reformable area during the local heating of the reformable area by contacting a first pusher with the non-reformable area and translating the first pusher along a linear path to apply a pushing force to the non-reformable area that results in the bend in the reformable area or by contacting a second pusher with an edge area of the reformable area and rotating the pusher along a circular path to apply a pushing force to the edge area of the reformable area that results in the bend in the reformable area.

  • Patent number: 9321680
Abstract: A method for fabricating a high-density array of holes in glass comprises providing a glass sheet having a front surface and irradiating the glass sheet with a laser beam so as to produce open holes extending into the glass sheet from the front surface of the glass sheet. The beam creates thermally induced residual stress within the glass around the holes, and after irradiating, the glass sheet is annealed to eliminate or reduce thermal stress caused by the step of irradiating. The glass sheet is then etched to produce the final hole size. Preferably, the glass sheet is also annealed before the step of irradiating, at sufficiently high temperature for a sufficient time to render the glass sheet dimensionally stable during the step of annealing after irradiating.

  • Patent number: 9302927
Abstract: A vacuum melting furnace for infrared glass, includes an upper furnace body and a lower furnace body that can be connected with each other or isolated from each other. Vacuum melting of the infrared glass is achieved in the upper furnace body wherein the influence of water in the environment is eliminated. The vacuum negative pressure environments can promote separation of hydroxyl in the structure, which achieves removing of hydroxyl in the glass, and then discharging of the molten infrared glass is conducted at atmospheric pressure in the lower furnace body. By using the vacuum melting furnace for infrared glass, infrared glass with good spectrum transmission performance can be obtained with improved property stability and optical homogeneity, which facilitates the preparation and molding of large sized and special-shaped infrared glass products.
