The piston is moved to a pulled position by centrifugal force applied by rotation of the tire to open the intake opening, and moved to a pushed position by air pressure from the inner space to block the intake opening and create a compression chamber within the piston compartment. The self-inflation device further includes a valve separating the compression chamber and the piston opening. The valve is opened when the piston is in the pushed position to allow airflow between the compression chamber and the inner space.

    Abstract: A quick release skewer assembly for use in mounting a wheel to wheel supporting fork includes a camming lever that is pivotally coupled to the skewer for pivoting relative to the skewer between lever closed and lever open positions. With the skewer properly tightened on the fork, pivoting the lever to the lever closed position clamps the wheel to the fork with a clamping force. A biasing member coupled to the skewer and to the fork applies a biasing force that biases the lever toward the lever open position. When the skewer is insufficiently tightened, the biasing force moves the lever to a bias rest position between the lever closed and open positions. The positioning of the lever in the bias rest position provides a visual alert to an individual using a vehicle, such as a bicycle, that the wheel is insufficiently tightened.

A cavity is formed in the wheel end assembly between the bearings. A port is formed in the wheel hub and extends axially inwardly from an outboard end to a lubricant cavity of the hub, and angles radially inwardly from the outboard end to the lubricant cavity at an angle relative to an axial centerline of the hub. Lubricant for the bearings is introduced into the cavity by means of the port, and the port is tapped to receive a plug to seal it and contain the lubricant in the cavity. The port also provides a visual indicator if there is a leakage of semi-fluid grease.

The central tire inflation system includes a rotary union assembly having a housing that is coupled to and rotates with the hubcap. The housing is rotationally coupled to a stationary shaft. A flexible torque transfer shaft is connected to the stationary shaft on one end and to an axle plug on the other end. The axle plug has a hub forming a bore where the hub is movable on a web of material. The flexible torque transfer shaft and hub have cooperative non-circular shapes to resist rotation. An air vent is provided in the rotary union assembly that is isolated from the lubrication area, which inhibits the pressurized air from the central tire inflation system from pressurizing the lubrication area.
