Patent number: 9885568Abstract: A camera at a fixed vertical height positioned above a reference plane, with an axis of a camera lens at an acute angle with respect to a perpendicular of the reference plane. One or more processors receive camera images of a multiplicity of people of unknown height and vertical axis of the images are transformed into pixel counts. The known heights of people from a known statistical distribution of heights of people are received by one or more processors and transformed to a normalized measurement of pixel counts, based in part on a focal length of the camera lens, the angle of the camera, and an objective function summing differences between pixel counts of the known heights of people and the unknown heights of people. The fixed vertical height of the camera is determined by adjusting the estimated camera height to minimize the objective function.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2016Date of Patent: February 6, 2018Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Ankur Datta, Rogerio S. Patent number: 9794526Abstract: A monitoring unit system is provided having a parent unit whose speaker is muted when a wrist unit is activated, where the wrist unit vibrates, the parent unit or wrist unit lights up, the wrist unit continues to alert until a mute button is pressed, or if a predetermined time elapses, alerts the parent unit, and having a low battery trigger, a fail-safe wrist unit and parent unit out of range trigger, a page button for the wrist unit and parent unit, a mute feature on the baby unit, and a cry duration or volume threshold trigger.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2014Date of Patent: October 17, 2017Assignee: SONR LLCInventors: Rene Paula-Molina, Klaus Rosburg, Yanir Hirshberg

Patent number: 9020042Abstract: A system and a corresponding method for temporal modification of audio signals, to increase or reduce the playback rates of an audio and/or a video file in a client-server environment. The system and method improve the efficiency of serving streaming media to a client so that the client can select an arbitrary time-speedup factor. The speedup system performs many of the pre-calculations once, at the server, so that the bandwidth needs are reduced and the client's computational load is minimized. The final time-scale-modification can be either done completely on the server, thus reducing the client's needs, or partly on the client's computer to minimize latency, and to reduce on-the-fly computational load from the server that serves multiple clients concurrently.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2011Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Arnon Amir, Malcolm Slaney

Patent number: 8830328Abstract: A duplex imaging apparatus for imaging at least one side of a document, including a processor and lower and upper imaging devices. Each imaging device includes an optical-chamber, a camera and a light-source-configuration, facilitated to directly illuminate each face of the document from at least two illuminating angles. The lower imaging device is enclosed by a glass-window, wherein the document is operatively disposed on the glass-window. Each of the light source configurations includes at least one cluster of light sources, wherein the clusters of light sources are operated in a preconfigured sequence. Direct illumination forms hotspots in the acquired image frames at preconfigured locations, corresponding to the light sources positioning. The processor is facilitated to cutout preconfigured image frame portions containing the hotspots, forming clean portions of the image frames, and to combine the clean portions to form a clean output image frame.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2011Date of Patent: September 9, 2014Inventors: Iuval Hatzav, Ilan Ben-Shahar, Giyora Sharaby, Daniel Hatzav

Patent number: 8681213Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method for digitally scanning motion picture film with automatic recovery after a failed splice or break is repaired. The system includes a motion picture film digital scanner. Software executed on a processor either integrated within the motion picture film digital scanner or in an external computer communicating with the motion picture film digital scanner detects film breakage. When an operator signals that the splice repair operation is complete, the software directs the scanner to rewind the film by a pre-determined amount and resume scanning. The software automatically, and seamlessly, merges the scan sequences from before and after the splice repair operation.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2013Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Inventor: Stefan Demetrescu

Patent number: 8115805Abstract: A stereoscopic image display that displays a stereoscopic image using a barrier operated by a time division method. A display panel time-divides first and second images having parallax therebetween and sequentially displays the first and second images. A barrier is located in front of the display panel and includes first and second image transmission regions transmitting the first and second images. A barrier driver controls opening and shutting of the first and second image transmission regions in synchronization with first and second video signals input thereto. The barrier driver extracts all video signals displayed on one picture from the input video signals as unit video signals and generates a reference signal for the barrier operation based on the unit video signals.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2005Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: Samsung Mobile Display Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hyoung-Wook Jang, Jang-Doo Lee, Hui Nam, Beom-Shik Kim, Myoung-Seop Song

Patent number: 8040948Abstract: A moving-image signal, such as typically a luminance signal organized in blocks of pixels is coded via a technique that envisages the steps of: comparing a block to be coded with a plurality of candidate prediction blocks; determining, for each candidate prediction block, a respective value of an index representing the difference between the block to be coded and each candidate prediction block; and choosing between the candidate prediction blocks, as a function of the respective value of the aforesaid index, a prediction block to be used for coding of the block to be coded. The signal is sampled pixel by pixel on the block to be coded and on the plurality of candidate prediction blocks, thus generating respective surfaces representing the pattern of the signal in the block to be coded and in the candidate prediction blocks. Chosen as an index is an index of the parallelism between the aforesaid respective surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2006Date of Patent: October 18, 2011Assignee: STMicroelectronics S.r.l.Inventors: Gianluca Filippini, Bruno Biffi, Fabrizio Simone Rovati, Emiliano Piccinelli
