  • Patent number: 9210432
Abstract: Blocks of a frame of a video stream can be encoded using lossless inter-frame prediction encoding. The compression ratio of lossless inter-frame encoding can be improved by first examining the magnitude of a motion vector used to perform inter-frame prediction. If the magnitude of the motion vector is small, the residual generated by the inter-prediction can be entropy coded and included in the encoded bitstream. If the magnitude of the motion vector is greater than a threshold, the residual can be encoded using lossy encoding and then decoded and subtracted from the original residual. The resulting difference residual is encoded using lossless encoding and included in the output bitstream along with the lossy encoded residual, permitting the block to be decoded with no loss at a decoder.

  • Patent number: 9204156
Abstract: Innovations described herein facilitate the addition of temporal scalability to non-scalable bitstreams. For example, a bitstream rewriter receives units of encoded video data for a non-scalable bitstream from components of a hardware-based encoder. The bitstream rewriter changes at least some of the units of encoded video data so as to produce a scalable bitstream with temporal scalability. In doing so, the bitstream rewriter can associate an original sequence parameter set (SPS) and original picture parameter set (PPS) with pictures for a temporal base layer, and associate a new SPS and new PPS with pictures for a temporal enhancement layer. The bitstream rewriter can also alter syntax elements in the units of encoded video data, for example, changing syntax elements in a slice header in ways that avoid bit shifting operations for following coded slice data for a unit of encoded video data for the temporal enhancement layer.

  • Patent number: 9188644
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a system for, and method operating latency measurement including an event generation device that generates an initial event used to measure system latency. A component test system receives the event and in response outputs a test component output signal and a zero-latency indicator. An electronics system including a multifunction display unit receives the test component output signal and displays a visible element on the multifunction display unit. A camera generates a series of recorded images, where each recorded image contains an image of the zero-latency indicator and an image of the visible element. A processor then determines the system latency by determining a time difference in the series of recorded images between a representation of an occurrence of the event in the image of the zero-latency indicator and a representation of the occurrence of the event in the image of the visible element.
