  • Patent number: 9609549
Abstract: A network device includes a communication interface. A processing system is coupled to the communication interface. A memory system is coupled to the processing system and includes instructions that, when executed by the processing system, cause the processing system to receive first traffic though the communication interface and forward the first traffic downstream though the communication interface using a first path. The memory system also includes instructions that, when executed by the processing system, cause the processing system receive a congestion notification from a downstream network device through the communication interface and determine whether the congestion notification is associated with the first traffic. In response to the first traffic being associated with the congestion notification, the processor determines whether a second path exists for forwarding subsequent traffic that is associated with the congestion notification downstream though the communication interface.

  • Patent number: 8750155
Abstract: Techniques for modifying the performance of a transport layer protocol in response to a request for content are disclosed. A connection can be established between a content distribution server and an end user computer according to preconfigured parameters. When a request for content is received over the connection, the content distribution server can determine one or more parameters relating to the performance of the connection using information from the request. The content distribution server can modify the connection at the transport layer according to the one or more parameters. Thereafter, the transport layer can manage delivery of the requested content to the end user computer in accordance with the modified parameters. In various embodiments, the content distribution server includes a modified TCP protocol stack which adjusts timing, pacing, and buffer allocation associated with a connection in response to requests from an application-layer data source.

  • Patent number: 8681695
Abstract: In general, techniques are described for single prefix address allocation within computer networks. Typically, a network device that allocates addresses within a computer network implements the techniques. The network device comprises an interface and a control unit. The interface receives first and second messages from a subscriber network. The first message requests at least one address be allocated to the subscriber network according to a first address allocation mechanism. The second message requests at least one address be allocated to the subscriber network in accordance with a second address allocation mechanism. The control unit automatically determines a topology of the subscriber network based on the second message. Based on the determined topology, the control unit selectively allocates either a single network address prefix or one or more addresses of the network address prefix in response to the second message without allocating an address in response to the first message.

  • Patent number: 8605606
Abstract: A method and apparatus for triggering radio link control (RLC) re-establishment and/or protocol data unit (PDU) discard are disclosed. An RLC entity maintains a state variable for counting a total number of transmissions and/or retransmissions of an RLC PDU and its PDU segments. If the state variable reaches a threshold, the RLC entity initiates RLC re-establishment and/or discards the RLC PDU and PDU segments. The state variable may be incremented each time a negative acknowledgement is received for at least a portion of the RLC PDU or when a retransmission is considered for the RLC PDU or a portion of the RLC PDU. The RLC entity may increase a state variable proportionate to a retransmitted data size. The RLC entity may maintain separate state variables for the RLC PDU and PDU segments and counts the number of transmissions and/or retransmissions for the RLC PDU and the PDU segments.

  • Patent number: 8532134
Abstract: Quality of Service (QoS) support is provided by means of a Tiered Contention Multiple Access (TCMA) distributed medium access protocol that schedules transmission of different types of traffic based on their service quality specifications. In one embodiment, a wireless station is supplied with data from a source having a lower QoS priority QoS(A), such as file transfer data. Another wireless station is supplied with data from a source having a higher QoS priority QoS(B), such as voice and video data. Each wireless station can determine the urgency class of its pending packets according to a scheduling algorithm. For example file transfer data is assigned lower urgency class and voice and video data is assigned higher urgency class. There are several urgency classes which indicate the desired ordering.

  • Patent number: 8295186
Abstract: Performance measurements are taken in a data network where information from a source is sent to a set of receivers via a plurality of routers using multicast addressing by generating a performance measurement packet having indicia indicating that the packet is a performance measurement packet at the source. The performance measurement packet is forwarded from the source to a subset of one or more identified receivers over the same respective paths as non-measurement packets. The performance measurement packets are received at the subset of identified receivers, but not at receivers in the set that are not part of the subset.
