Patent number: 6912529Abstract: A system for storing and retrieving text-based documents stores each of the documents in accordance with a mark-up language that comprises mark-up elements defined by a meta-language such as XML (Extensible Mark-up Language). In particular, each text document includes a plurality of text items, and each text item is associated in the text document with at least one of the mark-up elements. Each text document is stored at a central repository that is in communication with a plurality of user computers. A user can retrieve those documents that are of interest by formulating a search query that is transmitted from a user computer to the central repository. A search engine searches through the text items of each stored text document in order to determine which text documents satisfy the search query. Those text documents that satisfy the search condition are retrieved from the central repository and provided to the user computer for display.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 1998Date of Patent: June 28, 2005Assignee: Multex Systems, Inc.Inventor: Michael Kolfman

Patent number: 6907429Abstract: An satellite-based internet access includes uses a distributed proxy server that reduces a delay associated with the retrieval of inline objects of web pages. The distributed proxy server includes a first component which runs on the browser side of the satellite link and communicates with web browsers, and a second component which runs on an Internet side of the satellite link and communicates with web servers. When a web page is requested over the satellite link, the second component determines whether the parent file includes any references to inline objects, and prefetches each such inline object. The prefetched objects are transmitted over the satellite link to the first component, which in-turn stores the prefetched objects in a cache and provides the prefetched objects to the requesting web browser. The first component may also block browser requests for prefetched inline objects from unnecessarily being transmitted over the satellite link.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2003Date of Patent: June 14, 2005Assignee: Tachyon, Inc.Inventors: Bruce L. Patent number: 6889227Abstract: A system or method enables a two tier computer application to operate in a three tier computer environment without specific programming for the three tier environment. Such a system or method receives a database call at a computer system and maps the database call to a general programming language call of a computer application. The general programming language call is executed to invoke functions of the computer application that correspond to functions of the database call. The general programming language call may be an Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) call. An application server receives the database call and maps the database call to the general programming language call. In response to executing the general programming language call, the application server generates a second database call to the database that may either correspond directly or indirectly to the database call received at the application server. The database calls may both be SQL calls.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 2000Date of Patent: May 3, 2005Assignee: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventor: Graham Hamilton

Patent number: 6874001Abstract: A method, an apparatus, a system, a computer program product, and a computer program are disclosed for maintaining consistency of object content (252) and metadata (204) related to the object (252) in a loose transaction model, preferably using SQL Mediated Object Manipulation (SMOM), for object and meta-data updates. The related meta-data (204) and a reference to the object (252) are stored in a table of a database. The object is stored externally to the database in an object store. The reference is used to obtain a handle for directly accessing or manipulating the external object. A version number embedded in the handle is then obtained. The embedded version number is then compared with a version number of a latest committed version of the externally stored object to determine if the handle refers to a current version of the externally stored object.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2001Date of Patent: March 29, 2005Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Inderpal Singh Narang, Karen Wolfe Brannon, Suparna Bhattacharya, Hui-I Hsiao

Patent number: 6871201Abstract: A method is provided for data classification that achieves improved interpretability and accuracy while preserving the efficiency and scalability of univariate decision trees. To build a compact decision tree, the method searches for clusters in subspaces to enable multivariate splitting based on weighted distances to such a cluster. To classify an instance more accurately, the method performs a nearest neighbor (NN) search among the potential nearest leaf nodes of the instance. The similarity measure used in the NN search is based on Euclidean distances defined in different subspaces for different leaf nodes. Since instances are scored by their similarity to a certain class, this approach provides an effective means for target selection that is not supported well by conventional decision trees.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2001Date of Patent: March 22, 2005Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Philip Shi-lung Yu, Haixun Wang

Patent number: 6868425Abstract: Maintaining versions and workspaces in an object repository is disclosed. The system provides an efficient way to manage versions of objects by only copying objects when absolutely necessary, i.e. when a property value in a particular object has changed. In addition, the system provides a mechanism to control whether or not relationships are propagated to successor versions of an object. A further aspect of the system is that resolution of objects during a relationship traversal can be customized depending on whether or not an application accessing the objects is version-aware. If the application is not version aware, a means for resolving the relationship to a particular object is provided. A still further aspect of the system is that merge behavior is parameterized. When two versions of an object are merged, flags control how conflicts in property values and relationship contents are managed.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2000Date of Patent: March 15, 2005Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Thomas F. Patent number: 6856989Abstract: A file system for file sharing includes a web server that creates a temporary directory for each session between the web server and a client computer. When the client computer requests a file located in a file server, the web server creates a symbolic link to the file in the temporary directory and a web page including an URL to the symbolic link. The web server transmits the web page, and therefore the file, to the client computer. Client computer can also upload files to the web server. The web server saves the uploaded files to the temporary directory and then moves the files to the file server. At the end of the session, the web server deletes the temporary directory. Thus, files are not saved on the web server and therefore not accessible to others from the Internet. In this file system, file and directory names are orderly incremented in the file server to simplify the back up process of the file server.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2000Date of Patent: February 15, 2005Assignee: ArcSoft, Inc.Inventors: Ming Zhou, Wenbing Zhang, Chien-yu Lin
