  • Patent number: 5728110
Abstract: A laparoscopic stapler with a blocking body is disclosed. The blocking body allows the stapler to be inserted into the abdominal cavity through a cannula and removed therefrom until the staples are fired. When the staples are fired, the blocking body allows the stapler to be removed from the abdominal cavity of the patient through the cannula. After the staples have been fired and the stapler is removed from the abdominal cavity, the blocking body is in a blocking position where it then prevents the stapler from being reinserted through the cannula.

  • Patent number: 5728118
Abstract: A ring blade and drive system, and method of using same, for harvesting bone-tendon-bone ligament grafts having substantially cylindrical bone plugs. The ring blade disclosed is a circular ring having a predetermined arcuate gap formed in its periphery. The drive system includes a blade holder to peripherally hold the ring blade and a fixed-center oscillating mechanism to oscillate the ring blade about its axis within a predetermined arcuate range of motion. The ring blade structure enables the production of a substantially cylindrical bone plug of unlimited length. Harvesting of a bone-tendon-bone ligament graft is facilitated with the ring blade and method disclosed which enables the ring blade to be placed partially around a tendon segment to create bone plugs aligned with the tendon fibers included in the defined tendon segment. The cuts into the bone may be initiated into the bone at either end of the tendon segment from the tendon side through to the exterior of the bone to which the tendon is attached.

  • Patent number: 5728114
Abstract: Apparatus and methods of use for reducing bleeding from the situs of a percutaneous arterial puncture in a living being, with the opening in the arterial wall having been closed by a closure including at least one portion of a suture extending out of the puncture. The apparatus basically comprising a mass of material which inhibits the flow of blood therethrough, e.g., collagen, a carrier for carrying the suture portion through the mass of material, and means for holding the mass of material with respect to the suture portion so that it closely engages tissue contiguous with the puncture tract. The means for holding may comprise a knot in the suture portion, or can be a releasably securable member for location on the suture portion. In one embodiment the carrier comprises a piercing member, e.g., a needle, arranged for location within the interior of the artery for passage thereout through the wall of the artery and through the mass of material to carry the suture portion therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5725541
Abstract: An expandable fastener device for attaching tissue to bone and a surgical operating technique for using it. The fastener device includes a shaft which will pierce tissue and when rotated, will drill a hole in bone with a drill point to receive the fastener in bone. The device can be drilled in place and fixed in place by actuation of the device itself. The anchor porion of the fastener device remaining in the body when the shaft is sheared and removed, is made from a a bioabsorbable polymer material and an implantable grade titanium material or alloy thereof. The portion of the fastener that captures the body soft tissue (tendon or ligaments) is biodegradable and the portion anchored to the bone is the titanium material. Another embodiment constructs the component that captures the body soft tissue into a pedal-like integral disk where each pedal flexes to conform to the shape of the bone surface adjacent thereto.

  • Patent number: 5720765
Abstract: A one-piece or two-piece knotless suture anchor assembly for the attachment or reattachment or repair of tissue to a bone mass. The assembly allows for an endoscopic or open surgical procedure to take place without the requirement of tying a knot for reattachment of tissue to bone mass. In one embodiment, a spike member is inserted through tissue and then inserted into a dowel-like hollow anchoring sleeve which has been inserted into a bone mass. The spike member is securely fastened or attached to the anchoring sleeve with a ratcheting mechanism thereby pulling or adhering (attaching) the tissue to the bone mass.

  • Patent number: 5716368
Abstract: A surgical instrument facilitates tying of a knot in a length of suture material at a remote surgical location. The instrument is comprised of an inner rod having a length of suture wrapped over the rod in a particular pattern. A needle may be secured to a free end of the suture and the pattern of wrapping the suture on the rod enables loops of suture to move off the rod end and over the needle to form a knot in the suture. The inner rod is received in an interior bore of an outer rod for manually controlled reciprocating movement therein. The inner rod is manually retracted into the interior bore of the outer rod to cause the outer rod to move the loops of suture off the inner rod end and over the needle in forming a knot in the suture. An extendable filament is contained in the inner rod and has a connector at its distal end for holding the free end of the suture.

  • Patent number: 5713910
Abstract: A method and device for the placement of sutures and for the purpose of approximating tissue. A particular utility is effected in the approximation of the tissue separated by means of an endosurgical trocar being inserted into a body cavity. The invention provides for the loading of suture material including needles into the device, introduction and placement of the device into the body cavity, with the distal end having deployable needle guides, extending the needle guides either simultaneously or individually to the periphery of the wound, engaging the wound with the needle guides, driving the needles and suture material through the tissue to be approximated into a catch mechanism, retracting the needle guides and withdrawing the device, leaving a loop of suture material in the margin of tissue. The suture may then be tied to approximate the wound and excess suture material cut off.
