  • Patent number: 6039158
Abstract: A power-actuated parking brake is provided that produces sufficient force to set a parking brake for a locomotive. A powered drive train rotates a sheave over which a brake chain is positioned. Rotation of the sheave draws up the brake chain that is connected at one end to the parking brake. The parking brake is set when sufficient tension is applied to the brake chain by the powered drive. The drive train includes a drive shaft driven by an electric motor and connected to the sheave through a planetary reduction drive and a clutch.

  • Patent number: 6039310
Abstract: A method serves to actively perform vibration damping of driven elements of workpiece transport devices in and on shaping machines, especially presses and punches. A measured state value of the driven element or one reconstructed by an observer is determined. The state value is then entered into a damping regulator which affects the drive of the driven elements. A damping regulating circuit is provided in addition to a position regulating circuit.

  • Patent number: 6032754
Abstract: A power transmission system for a snowmobile reduces the weight thereof, and allows a streamlined body to be obtained. A drive side pulley of a V-belt transmission is mounted on a right end of a crankshaft of an engine. A gear box is disposed on the right side of a driven side pulley of the V-belt transmission at a position near the driven side pulley. The driven side pulley is fastened to an input shaft. Thus, the V-belt transmission and gear box are disposed on the same right side of the engine, so that the connecting shaft for connecting the V-belt transmission to the gear box is shortened and the weight thereof is reduced. Further, the V-belt transmission and the engine are disposed between a pair of right and left main frames, and the gear box is disposed outside of the right main frame, to thereby shorten a distance between the right and left main frames.

  • Patent number: 6033040
Abstract: A left hydraulic pump 3L connected to a left wheel and a right hydraulic pump 3R connected to a right wheel are interconnected by a first oil passage 21 and a second oil passage 22 to constitute a closed circuit. First and second variable throttle valves 8L and 8R are mounted between the first and second oil passages 21 and 22 and a tank 6. A first on-off valve 11L is disposed between two working chambers 9L.sub.2 and 9L.sub.3 of the left hydraulic pump 3L and the second oil passage 22, and a second on-off valve 11R is disposed between two working chambers 9R.sub.2 and 9R.sub.3 of the right hydraulic pump 3R and the first oil passage 21. For example, if the first variable throttle valve 8L is throttled, the pressure in the first oil passage 21 is risen to open the first on-off valve 11L, thereby increasing the amount of oil discharged from the first hydraulic pump 3L.

  • Patent number: 6032935
Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid enclosing type vibration isolating mount comprising a vibration isolating base member 16, a diaphragm 20 and a partition member 22 for vertically dividing a space between the former two into upper and lower liquid chambers 24 and 26. The partition member 22 is made of a press worked metal plate which is held in contact with the periphery of the diaphragm 20 to provide an orifice path 28 for establishing communication between the liquid chambers 24 and 26. The vibration isolating mount of the present invention has the following advantages: The partition member 22 is made of a press worked metal plate so that the manufacturing cost can be saved; since the periphery of the diaphragm 20 is used as a part of the wall of the orifice path 28, the axial length of the mount can be shortened and the shape of the mount is simplified; and the pressing process of the partition member 22 is facilitated.

  • Patent number: 6029783
Abstract: A variable resistance device comprises an inner elongate, flexible electrode having a longitudinal central axis, at least one outer electrode spaced from the inner electrode and at least partially or completely surrounding the inner elongate electrode to form a gap therebetween. The outer electrode has a longitudinal axis that is at least substantially coaxial with the central axis of the inner elongate electrode. An electroviscous fluid is positioned in the gap between the inner and outer electrodes. An electric field applied to the electroviscous fluid between the inner and outer electrodes causes an increase in the stiffness of the device. In one embodiment of the invention, the outer electrode is also flexible to form a flexible resistance device, the stiffness of which can be controlled by the application of the electric field. In a further embodiment, an enclosed chamber is filled with an electroactive fluid and a piston assembly is mounted for reciprocal movement in the chamber.

  • Patent number: 6030056
Abstract: During a time period of from a time that is immediately before a vehicle being stopped to a time of the vehicle being stopped, a pressure increase gradient in braking fluid pressure which is applied to wheel cylinders of rear wheels is made to be larger than a pressure increase gradient that prevailed until a time that was immediately before the vehicle being stopped. As a result, a pitching motion that occurs in a vehicle body can be suppressed.

  • Patent number: 6019200
Abstract: A device is proposed for braking an electrically conducting strip (B), said device being mounted in front of a processing station where the strip (B) under tension undergoes further processing and is provided with a magnetic field generating device (3). The latter generates an alternating magnetic field which induces eddy currents in the strip (B) which in turn exert on the strip a force in a direction against the strip's direction or travel (F). The magnetic field generating device (3) comprises at least one rotating magnetic roller (4, 5) which is aligned transversely in relation to the direction of travel of the strip (B) and is provided around its circumference with magnetic poles (6, 7) of differing polarity in alternating sequence. The direction of rotation (R) of the magnetic roller (4, 5) is opposite to the direction of travel (F) of the strip (B).

  • Patent number: 6015142
Abstract: A spring module having a shaft movable in first and second directions and a biasing element for urging the shaft into a normal position upon loss of power. The spring module also includes motion limiting means for limiting the deenergization of the biasing element and a speed reduction apparatus intercoupling the motion limiting means and the shaft. The biasing element is energized upon movement of the shaft in the second direction and deenergized by shaft movement in the first direction. Similarly, the motion limiting means are coupled to the shaft for movement in third and fourth directions. The speed reduction apparatus moves the motion limiting means at a slower rate in the third and fourth directions than the shaft moves in the first and second directions.

  • Patent number: 6012555
Abstract: A wheelchair braking system, for use on a wheelchair having a frame and a pair of wheels, comprising an axle assembly attached to one of the wheels. The axle assembly is supported within a block assembly. The axle assembly has a locking gear comprising a plurality of gear teeth. The block assembly is mounted within a housing and is capable of controlled vertical motion within the housing. The housing is rigidly mounted to the frame. A main spring is located between the housing and block, such that weight upon the wheelchair compresses the main spring and allows the block to move upward within the housing. A foremast assembly having a foremast body is mounted to the housing such that when the block is lowered sufficiently within the housing, the foremast body engages the gear teeth and stops the gear from rotating.

  • Patent number: 6007163
Abstract: A pressure difference is formed between a master cylinder pressure and a wheel cylinder pressure when a master cut-off valve closes a hydraulic path connecting a master cylinder and a wheel cylinder and a hydraulic pump supplies pressurized brake fluid to the wheel cylinder. After the pressure difference has been formed, the master cut-off valve opens the hydraulic path so that the pressure difference is cancelled. As a result, pulsations in brake fluid pressure occurs in the hydraulic path. A failure of the master cut-off valve or the hydraulic pump is detected based on the pulsations in brake fluid pressure.
