  • Patent number: 7958937
Abstract: A process for hydrofracturing a specific interval or zone in a water aquifer from a water well borehole and introducing high-pressure water and gravel proppants for increasing water flow production from the water well. The process uses a hydrofracture tool having a pipe section with a pair of inflatable packers. The tool is lowered into the borehole to the deepest interval to be fraced. The packers are then inflated thus sealing off the area in the borehole above the interval. High-pressure water is then introduced through the drill stem and out a high-pressure injection port in the lower end of the pipe section. After sufficient high-pressure water has fractured the surrounding interval, gravel proppants are forced into the surrounding fractured interval.

  • Patent number: 7588080
Abstract: A method of installing a submersible electrical pump assembly in a well monitors the integrity of the pump assembly and electrical cable while the pump assembly is being run. The pump assembly has at least one sensor that measures a parameter in the environment of the pump assembly. A battery-powered test unit is mounted to the reel of cable, and a lead of the unit is connected to the power cable. While lowering the completion equipment, test voltage is supplied from the unit via the power cable through the motor to the sensor. The unit transmits an indication to a remote monitor that the sensor is operational.

  • Patent number: 6942044
Abstract: A steering tool for extended-reach directional drilling in three dimensions comprises a mud pulse telemetry section, a rotary section, and a flex section assembled as an integrated system in series along the length of the tool. The flex section comprises a flexible drive shaft and a deflection actuator for applying hydraulic pressure along the length of the shaft for bending the shaft when making inclination angle adjustments during steering. The rotary section comprises a rotator housing coupled to the deflection housing for rotating the deflection housing for making azimuth angle adjustments during steering. The onboard mud pulse telemetry section receives inclination and azimuth angle steering commands together with actual inclination and azimuth angle feedback signals during steering for use in controlling operation of the flex section and rotary section for steering the tool along a desired course.

  • Patent number: 6779605
Abstract: A safety system controls the activation of one or more downhole tools by providing selective transmission of an activation signal or an energy stream. In a preferred embodiment, transmission of the activation signal or the energy stream is allowed after the tool has passed below a known pre-determined depth. A preferred safety system includes a first device in fixed relationship with the downhole tool and a second device fixed at the stationary location. The first device permits, after reaching the pre-determined depth, either (a) an initiation signal to reach an initiation device associated with a downhole tool upon or (b) the energy stream to reach a downhole tool. The second device positively engages the first device to provide an indication that the specified depth has been reached.

  • Patent number: 6712151
Abstract: A method of expanding tubing comprises locating an expansion tool in a section of tubing to be expanded, applying a fluid pressure to the tubing to create a fluid pressure expansion force and induce a hoop stress in the tubing, and applying a mechanical expansion force to the tubing via the expansion tool. The combined fluid pressure expansion force and mechanical expansion force is selected to be sufficient to induce expansion of the tubing.

  • Patent number: 6481510
Abstract: A directional drill for transport via rail tracks and railwheels associated with the directional drill to an operating location. The directional drill has a first frame associated with a set of pneumatic tires for movement of the directional drill onto and off of the tracks and, when removed from the tracks, for movement to the operating location. A second frame is rotatably attached to the first frame and allows the drilling configuration of the second frame to be more nearly horizontal relative to the first frame. Hydraulic lines move during drilling and are maintained in a predetermined configuration to reduce vibration and chaffing.
