  • Patent number: 8078831
Abstract: Apparatus, system and methods are provided for performing speculative data prefetching in a chip multiprocessor (CMP). Data is prefetched by a helper thread that runs on one core of the CMP while a main program runs concurrently on another core of the CMP. Data prefetched by the helper thread is provided to the helper core. For one embodiment, the data prefetched by the helper thread is pushed to the main core. It may or may not be provided to the helper core as well. A push of prefetched data to the main core may occur during a broadcast of the data to all cores of an affinity group. For at least one other embodiment, the data prefetched by a helper thread is provided, upon request from the main core, to the main core from the helper core's local cache.

  • Patent number: 7434031
Abstract: RAW aliasing can be predicted with register bypassing based at least in part on execution displacement alias prediction. Repeated aliasing between read and write operations (e.g., within a loop), can be reliably predicted based on displacement between the aliasing operations. Performing register bypassing for predicted to alias operations facilitates faster RAW bypassing and mitigates the performance impact of aliasing read operations. The repeated aliasing between operations is tracked along with register information of the aliasing write operations. After exceeding a confidence threshold, an instance of a read operation is predicted to alias with an instance of a write operation in accordance with the previously observed repeated aliasing. Based on displacement between the instances of the operations, the register information of the write operation instance is used to bypass data to the read operation instance.

  • Patent number: 7428631
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for renaming a logical register for which bit accesses of varying lengths are permitted, such as a predicate register. Rename logic supports renaming for both partial-bit accesses and bulk-bit accesses to bits of the register. Rename logic utilizes a rename map table associated with the logical register to be renamed and also includes a plurality of physical rename registers. They physical rename registers include a set of skinny physical rename registers to be used for renaming for partial-bit writes. The physical rename registers also include a set of fat physical rename registers to be used for renaming for bulk-bit writes. Additional sizes of physical rename registers may also be employed. The entries of the single physical rename map table may point to either fat or skinny physical rename registers.

  • Patent number: 7398372
Abstract: Fusing a load micro-operation (uop) together with an arithmetic uop. Intra-instruction fusing can increase cache memory storage efficiency and computer instruction processing bandwidth within a microprocessor without incurring significant computer system cost. • Patent number: 7398376
Abstract: Ordering instructions for specifying the execution order of other instructions improve throughput in a pipelined multiprocessor. Hardware, in conjunction with compiler directives, allows memory write operations local to a CPU to occur in an arbitrary order, and places constraints on shared memory operation to occur in a specified order. Multiple sets of instructions are provided in which order of execution of the instructions is maintained through the use of CPU registers, write buffers in conjunction with assignment of sequence numbers to the instruction, or a hierarchical ordering system. The system ensures that an earlier designated instruction has reach a specified state of execution prior to a latter instruction reaching a specified state of execution. The ordering of operations allows memory operations local to a CPU to occur in conjunction with other memory operations that are not affected by such execution.

  • Patent number: 7376812
Abstract: A processor can achieve high code density while allowing higher performance than existing architectures, particularly for Digital Signal Processing (DSP) applications. In accordance with one aspect, the processor supports three possible instruction sizes while maintaining the simplicity of programming and allowing efficient physical implementation. Most of the application code can be encoded using two sets of narrow size instructions to achieve high code density. Adding a third (and larger, i.e. VLIW) instruction size allows the architecture to encode multiple operations per instruction for the performance critical section of the code. Further, each operation of the VLIW format instruction can optionally be a SIMD operation that operates upon vector data. A scheme for the optimal utilization (highest achievable performance for the given amount of hardware) of multiply-accumulate (MAC) hardware is also provided.

  • Patent number: 7293163
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that dynamically adjusts the aggressiveness of an execute-ahead processor. If a data-dependent stall condition is encountered during program execution, the system enters an execute-ahead mode, wherein instructions that cannot be executed because of the unresolved data dependency are deferred, and other non-deferred instructions are executed in program order. If a non-data-dependent stall condition is encountered during execute-ahead mode, the system enters a scout mode, wherein instructions are speculatively executed to prefetch future loads, but results are not committed to the architectural state of the execute-ahead processor. On the other hand, if an unresolved data dependency is resolved during the execute-ahead mode, enters a deferred mode and executes deferred instructions. During this deferred mode, if some instructions are deferred again, the system determines whether to resume execution in the execute-ahead mode.

  • Patent number: 7243218
Abstract: The present invention relates to a processing unit for executing instructions in a computer system and to a method in such a processing unit. According to the present invention a decision is made whether or not to base execution on a value prediction (P), wherein the decision is based on information associated with the estimated time gain of execution based on a correct prediction. According to an embodiment of the present invention the decision regarding whether or not to execute speculatively is based on information regarding whether a cache hit or a cache miss is detected in connection with a load instruction. In an alternative embodiment of the present invention the decision is based on information regarding the dependency depth of the load instruction, i.e. the number of instructions that are dependent on the load.

  • Patent number: 7185178
Abstract: In one embodiment, a processor comprises an instruction cache and a fetch generator circuit coupled thereto. The fetch generator circuit is configured to generate at least one fetch request to the instruction cache for at least one of the plurality of threads. The fetch generator circuit is also configured to monitor for a plurality of conditions for each thread, wherein each of the plurality of conditions defined to inhibit the thread from being fetched. • Patent number: 7185186
Abstract: An apparatus for avoiding a deadlock condition in a microprocessor with a speculative branch target address cache (BTAC) that predicts a target address of a branch instruction contained in a cache line output by an instruction cache in response to a fetch address is disclosed. The BTAC incorrectly predicts the branch instruction is wholly contained in the cache line; consequently, the microprocessor fetches from the target address without fetching the next sequential cache line containing the rest of the instruction. An instruction formatter detects the instruction is only partially contained in the cache line and waits for the next cache line. However, the formatter receives no more cache lines because the target address misses in the cache and the missing cache line is not fetched from memory because the processor does not generate speculative instruction fetches. To avoid deadlocking, the apparatus invalidates the BTAC target address and retries.

  • Patent number: 7165168
Abstract: A microprocessor with a write queue for a branch target address cache (BTAC) is disclosed. The BTAC is read in parallel with an instruction cache in order to predict a target address of a branch instruction in the accessed cache line. In one embodiment, the BTAC is single-ported; hence, the single port must be shared for reading and writing. When the BTAC needs updating, such as when a branch target address is resolved, the microprocessor stores the branch target address and related information in the write queue. Thus, the write queue potentially enables updating of the BTAC to be delayed until the BTAC is not being read, such as when the instruction cache is idle, a misprediction by the BTAC is being corrected, or a prediction by the BTAC is being overridden. If the write queue becomes full, then it updates the BTAC anyway.
