Abstract: Blends of a sulfonated thermoplastic block polymer and a compatible extender oil are described. The block copolymer is first selectively hydrogenated and thereafter modified by grafting sulfonic acid containing functional groups primarily in the alkenyl arene blocks. Neutralization of the acid groups to a metal salt is preferred to prepare oil extended blends that retain substantial amounts of non-extended mechanical properties.

Abstract: A method for bonding substrates with silicone rubber substantially shortens the setting time and provides good bonding of the substrates with silicone rubber using a silicone rubber composition comprised of a thermal-crosslinking component and moisture-crosslinking component. The space between two substrates is filled and the composition is heated to give a silicone gel followed by moisture crosslinking to form a silicone rubber.
Abstract: A curable, sprayable composition suitable for reinforcing thin rigid plates or sheets such as are used in the assembly of automobiles is provided. The composition comprises a thermosetting resin, expandable microspheres and a particulate reinforcing material selected from the group consisting of milled glass fibers, milled carbon fibers and mixtures thereof.
Abstract: Microcapsules are prepared by encapsulating a core material with a capsule shell wall containing glutaraldehyde crosslinked gelatin and at least one water soluble plasticizer that reduces the permeability of the crosslinked gelatin. Optionally, the capsule shell wall also contains a feeding deterrent that dissuades accidental ingestion of the microcapsule. Upon exposing the microcapsules to water, the plasticizer is removed making the shell wall permeable whereby the encapsulated core material is released. Materials such as insecticides, herbicides, plant growth regulating agents, and fungicides may be encapsulated and released at a controlled location, time and rate.

Abstract: Adducts containing terminating nitro (nitroso) groups and one or more mesogenic moleties are prepared by reacting (A) at least one compound containing an average of more than one vicinal epoxide group per molecule with (B) at least one compound containing one or more nitro (nitroso) groups and an average of one reactive hydrogen atom per molecule; with the proviso that at least one member of components (A) and (B) contains a mesogenic moiety. Reaction of part or all of the aliphatic hydroxyl backbone groups by etherification, conversion to a halide, urethanation, oxidation to a ketone, or reduction of said ketone to an alkane, decreases the amount of hydroxyl group functionality. Reduction of these adducts provides amines which are useful as curing agents for epoxy resins.
