  • Patent number: 7080553
Abstract: A micro-accelerometer includes first and second closed cavities, into each of which an equal quantity of gas is introduced. A membrane partitions the symmetrical first and second cavities. Temperature sensors are provided within the first and second cavities, respectively, to measure the gas temperatures within the cavities. Difference of temperature is not caused so long as no acceleration affects the inner side of the cavities. However, if a linear acceleration is applied, the membrane is deformed in the direction of acceleration, whereby for example, the gas within the first temperature is compressed and its temperature increases, whereas the temperature of the second cavity decreases because the gas is expanded within the second cavity. The difference of gas temperatures between the first and second cavities is measured as a variation of electric power resistance by the temperature sensors and applied as a function of acceleration.

  • Patent number: 6986276
Abstract: The disclosed apparatus comprises a phase fraction meter and a compliant mandrel deployable within a production pipe, and may further comprise a flow velocity meter. The mandrel allows the determination of the phase fraction for a fluid comprising three phases by providing an additional cross sectional compliance within the conduit, thereby allowing the density of the fluid to be determined. The mandrel also provides a specified blockage through the flow velocity meter, thereby increasing flow velocity through the meter. This allows flow rate measurements in conditions under which flow velocity in the under-restricted cross-sectional area of the pipe would normally be very low. Further, the mandrel can provide a specified restriction in the pipe, i.e., a venturi. By measuring the differential pressure across the venturi and utilizing the measured fluid velocity from the flow velocity meter, the density of the fluid mixture can be calculated.

Abstract: By applying a first value of voltage to a first side of a MEMS gyroscope and applying a second value of voltage to a second side of the MEMS gyroscope, the start time of the MEMS gyroscope may be improved. The first and second value of voltage may be provided by a bias power source, such as a battery or a super capacitor. The first value of voltage may be substantially equal in magnitude to and opposite in polarity to the second value of voltage. The bias power source may also be applied to drive electronics connected to the MEMS gyroscope. The bias power source may prevent amplifiers within the drive electronics from saturating during the start time.

  • Patent number: 6928874
Abstract: A micromachined angle measuring gyroscope using a dual mass architecture measures angular positions rather than angular rates. The invention decouples the effects of drive and sense through the use of a dual mass architecture, and is comprised of a single lumped drive mass, which is structurally coupled to a second lumped slave mass, where the drive mass is electrostatically driven at the first resonant frequency the system using parallel plate electrodes. The slave mass is driven to higher amplitudes than the drive mass. In the presence of rotation, the line of oscillation in both masses precesses, which is easily detectable in the slave mass due to the amplified motion, and is exactly equal to the angle of rotation. The two illustrated embodiments are z-axis realizations of this principle, where the first device uses an inner drive/outer sense architecture and the second uses an outer drive/inner sense architecture.
