Abstract: A web site provides educational information over a computer network such as the Internet. The web site includes a plurality of web pages that can be displayed by the user. The web pages have a particular construction and content to facilitate review by the user. A first web page can be displayed that includes a combination of original information on a given educational topic, a hypertext link corresponding to the educational topic linked to a third party site and customized information corresponding to the third party site. The original information can be comprised of text and/or graphical images. The customized information comprises text in a form designed to encourage curiosity and visitation of a third party site for more information on the given educational topic.

Abstract: A frame of still picture data is captured at an instant specified by a user from video signals supplied from a given video source, such as a television receiver, a video camera, etc., and the image data is displayed. When the user specifies an area of image to be cut out from the displayed still picture, the image data in the specified area is cut out and recorded as a cutout image. Each cutout image recorded is displayed in the form of an icon. When any of the icons is selected by the user, the corresponding cutout image data is read and pasted in a part to be changed in the original image data. Thus an image can be easily created by user's choice.

Abstract: A Web browser provides the ability to separate content and hyper-links from a Web page and provides a list of the links for viewing on a mobile device display screen, and once a link is selected using the mobile device, a services portal link is provided to the mobile device display to provide selection of services to be performed on the selected link, such as faxing or printing. Further, the services are made link dependent, or user dependent so that specific services can be displayed depending on factors such as the availability of services provided specifically from a Web page owner for link dependent services, or for the location of a user relative to a print service provider for user dependent services.

Abstract: An edit data creation apparatus and method creates edit data specifying editing contents to arbitrarily combine edit materials. Positions of the edit materials are moved on the edit data. Adjustments are made to an end point of a first adjacent edit material upstream of the relevant edit material, and to a start point of a second adjacent edit material downstream of the relevant edit material according to the amount of movement of their respective edit materials. As a result, even if the edit materials are moved, it is possible to maintain the continuity between the adjacent edit materials on both sides and the moved edit material.

Abstract: A Web browser provides the ability to separate content and hyper-links from a Web page and provides a list of the links for viewing on a mobile device display screen, enabling more effective Web page navigating using the limited mobile device display. In addition to the links from the Web page, further links are created to telephone numbers, addresses, and other communication-related information in the Web page to further enhance usability of the Web page information for mobile device users. Further, once a link is selected using the mobile device, a services portal link is provided to the mobile device display to provide selection of services to be performed on the selected link, such as faxing or printing.

Abstract: An Internet television system and method are comprised of defining different program types or genres, and categorizing television programs into different genres. Each program is associated with a description which includes the assigned genre. The programs are encoded for streaming over the Internet. A Web site is provided for users to access the programs. A scheduler on a Web page is comprised of a plurality of timeslots arranged into a grid. Program genre icons corresponding to the genres are arranged adjacent the grid. A user can build a schedule by dragging the genre icons into selected timeslots, and save the schedule to a database. Programs which have not been watched, or least watched and long ago by the user are automatically selected for the scheduled genres and streamed to the client computer. The programs are allocated to the time available for each genre. Ads are interspersed between the programs.

Abstract: A user interface system, computer program product, and method for displaying an operation menu and transferring the contents thereof based on an operation input received in response to operation menu selection. The display and transfer of the operation menu are achieved using a group of independent software objects that include a menu flow software object that controls the transfer of the contents of the operation menu and a separate operation software object that functions in cooperation with the menu flow software object to control processing of the operation input by a processor. The operation software object includes an operational information memorizing object for storage of the operation software object contents and a separate operation controlling object functioning in cooperation with the operational information memorizing object to create, change, and delete the input operation.

Abstract: To process the layout of graphical objects, elastics data structures are established for the graphical objects to define minimum and preferred sizes, stretch properties and compression properties. Composite graphical objects include elastics properties computed from their components through add and max operations which are dependent on relative elasticities of the components. The positions of origins within graphical objects are defined by pairs of elastics in each of two dimensions. One application of elastics is with respect to text blocks where preferred width and compressibility of each text block is a function of the amount of text in the text block. The elastics and dimensions of graphical objects are processed in a three pass layout negotiation. In the first pass, preferred sizes and elasticities of the graphical objects are computed along a first dimension.

Abstract: A client-server network management system includes: a plurality of managed computer network elements, a managed element server that executes on a first computer; and at least one managed element server client that typically executes on a second computer. The managed element server and managed element server client are computer processes that execute from memory of their respective computers. The client-server network management system is really two applications in one: a visual element manager builder and a manager. The manager provides the run-time environment in which element managers are executed to monitor and manage computer network behavior such as network throughput, collision rate, and number of duplicate IP packets, to name a few. The manager portion of managed element server is independent of any graphic user interface. The logic and structure of the manager of managed element server is cleanly separated from the graphic user interfaces.

Abstract: A computer managed communication network with user interactive access via a plurality of display terminals and including a plurality of network objects, each respectfully associated with one of a plurality of linked network nodes. The network includes means such as databases for storing data representing attributes of network objects. There is graphically displayed on at least one of said display terminals, at least a portion of said linked network nodes and associated objects. In addition, there is a user interactive implementation for activating a transient display of a selected attribute of one of said displayed objects proximate to said object in combination with user interactive means for selecting the attribute to be transiently displayed. Preferably, the attribute is dynamically selected by user interactive means for activating the display of an attribute menu during the time of said transient display so that another attribute may be selected during said time.

Abstract: In a computer system that includes a Central Processing Unit and an associated input device, storage device and display device, a method for displaying on the display device a virtual three-dimensional (3D) dental model at desired preset views, for orthodontic use. The virtual 3D dental model is stored on the storage device and is indicative of a 3D structure of an individual's dental arches. The method includes the steps of providing a graphic user interface (GUI) that includes a graphic representation of the dental model and a plurality of graphic symbols each representative of a desired pre-set view of the dental model from a desired direction. Selecting through the input device graphic symbol from among the plurality of graphic symbols. Moving the dental model to a pre-set view which corresponds to the graphic symbol, whilst retaining the model in zoom.

Abstract: An information visualization system allows carrying out a three-dimensional walk through and hyperlink operation with little processing and allows automatically incorporating modifications into the image. A partial image generating device that forms the information visualization system generates a walk through image from three-dimensional space shape information and walk through path information, and converts same into a plurality of partial images that are partitioned at branching points. A branching information generating device generates branching information for the partial images. A hyperlink information generating device generates hyperlink information based on the visualized object information in the three-dimensional space. A partial image selection device sends a partial image switching instruction in order to switch partial images depending on the path selection of the user.

Abstract: In a system and method for displaying status of critical indicators or variables, icons representing the indicators are displayed in superposition with a reference shape. The reference shape is divided into “higher-interest” and “lower-interest” portions, such that display of an icon over the higher-interest portion of the reference shape indicates a higher-interest value of the corresponding variable. The reference shape is preferably elongated horizontally, with its upper portion designated as the higher-interest portion and its lower portion designated the lower-interest portion. Each monitored variable may be allocated a vertical “slice” of the reference shape, such that the position of the corresponding icon when the variable is in the higher-interest state is laterally aligned with the position of the icon when the variable is in the lower-interest state.

Abstract: A disclosed processing device, including an on-screen User interface display, incorporates a means for generating a display of a plurality of hierarchically ordered menus. The menus include a current menu) and a preceding parent menu showing a selection path from the parent menu to the current menu. Also a menu selection item within the hierarchical menu display provides a User at least one of, a) a display of control information for the device, and b) control parameter data entry capability. The processing device also incorporates a means for updating the on-screen display in response to User menu item selection. The processing device may also include a means for altering the device operation in response to an updated operating parameter value. Also, the selection path may indicate menu entry and exit points separated by at least one intervening menu item.

Abstract: A system and method for dynamically searching an identified web site. In one embodiment, a generic site search engine is invoked from any web page within the web site. Invoking the generic site search engine provides the user with an input display and displays resulting matches after searching pages from the web site. In another embodiment, a hidden HTML tag is used on web pages to identify the site specific search engine for the web site. When a user requests a site specific search engine from the user's web browser, the HTML tag is located and the corresponding web page containing the site specific search engine is opened. In another embodiment, if the HTML tag identifying the site specific search engine is not found, an analysis of the web site's root node is made to identify a site specific search engine. If a site specific search engine is identified through the analysis, the search engine web page is opened.

Abstract: A display apparatus has a communication unit which performs at least receiving of a plurality of pieces of display data. The display apparatus also has first storage device for storing received plurality of pieces of display data. The display apparatus further has a second storage unit for storing at least one piece of first icon information corresponding to at least one of the pieces of display data and at least one piece of second icon information of a display form different from that of the first icon information. The display apparatus further has a display unit for displaying, on a menu screen, at least one of the first icon information and the second icon information. The display apparatus further has a control unit for selecting the first icon information or the second icon information based on the number of pieces of display data newly registered in the first storage unit and for controlling the displaying unit so that the selected icon information is displayed on the menu screen.

Abstract: A main document and referenced frame documents to be rendered by a browser for a display page are parsed by the browser to identify where text and graphics objected are to be located. The location of a cursor that is used by the user to interact with the browser is tracked, and the object nearest to the cursor is determined. This object is then rendered prior to the rendering of other objects in the display page that would normally be rendered prior to the nearest object under conventional rendering schemes. Optionally, objects related to the nearest objects may be rendered the same time, and various other objects may be rendered or partially rendered while data corresponding to the nearest object is being received by the browser.

Abstract: A method for keyboard navigation in a graphical user interface, including defining a key event dispatcher for focus ordering of at least one non-focusable component, configured to recognize a special mode entry character and a special mode exit character, upon entry of the special mode entry character by a user, entering a special mode wherein subsequent key events are manipulated by the key event dispatcher to navigate the focus ordering of the at least one non-focusable component while a current focus owner is maintained, and exiting the special mode upon entry of the special mode exit character by the user, wherein the special mode is at least one of the group consisting of an input method mode, an accessible navigation mode and a window navigation mode.

Abstract: Method and apparatus inputting information identifying and classifying an article in an asset management database. A graphical user interface has a first screen showing a search field and a display window. A reference database has records, each record containing manufacturer, model and article type information for a respective class of articles. In response to the input of a manufacturer query in the search field, a list of entries is displayed in the display window. Each entry includes the same manufacturer identifier, a different model number, and one of multiple article types derived from the reference database. In response to selection of one of the list entries, a second screen appears having an empty data field for entry of an article identifier identifying an article made by a manufacturer identified by the manufacturer identifier and having the model number for the selected entry, and filled data fields containing the manufacturer identifier, model number and article type for said selected entry.

Abstract: An electrgonic information displaying method and apparatus are used to comfortably browse electronic information which includes embedded link information such as hypertext by way of a display device. The electronic information is arranged in a single virtual space based on a predetermined link format. A display image which is used to read the electronic information is generated and is then displayed on the display device on the basis of the visual field defined in virtual space. Moreover, the visual field is continuously changed depending upon an instruction from a user. Furthermore, a display image based on the visual field is continuously generated in realtime basis. By way of the updating of the information in real time, the user can read the electronic information by following the link of electronic information while continuously changing the visual field within the virtual space, to thereby simulate the reading of printed matter.
