  • Patent number: 4764405
Abstract: The present invention is a method for improving the barrier properties of thermoplastic substrates. A surface of the thermoplastic substrate is contacted with a reactive gas stream having an F.sub.2 concentration greater than or equivalent to 0.0001 atm. partial pressure of F.sub.2 per atm. total pressure and sufficient oxygen such that the F.sub.2 /O.sub.2 ratio is less than or equal to about 100, with the remainder being additional reactive and/or non-reactive components. A barrier coating material is applied to the treated surface of the substrate and subsequently undergoes a curing step to form the final product.

  • Patent number: 4764409
Abstract: A fiber reinforced structure formed by layers of fiber having a metallic reinforcement element disposed therebetween. The metallic element includes bent portions or fingers formed at the edges thereof, which extend toward the outer surfaces of the layers of fiber. The fiber layers and metallic element are held in place by resin injected during a molding process. The bent portions of the metallic element bridge the inner plane surfaces of the layers of fiber to strengthen the areas at the resin plane where stress areas normally causes the layers of fiber to separate.

  • Patent number: 4762743
Abstract: Wedge spacers for forming slab gels of increasing cross section are manufactured from strips of thermoplastic material by impressing corrugations into the strips which run lengthwise from one end of each strip to a point along the strip between the two ends. The corrugations decrease in depth from a maximum at the strip end down to flatness at their terminus on the strip face. The forming technique imparts a high degree of reproducibility to the spacers, while still insuring a tight seal.

  • Patent number: 4761315
Abstract: A blank having a rectangular shaped body from which a lens pattern is cut to the desired size and shape of a frame lens opening is connected to other identical blanks to form a chain for continuous feeding to a lens pattern generator. The blanks have ball and socket hinge members symmetrically arranged on each edge with a ball hinge member on one edge being opposite a socket hinge member on the other edge. The hinge members are offset with respect to a plane passing through the center of the body between the top and bottom faces of the blank so that the pivot axis of the ball and socket hinge members on one edge is in the plane of the top face and the pivot axis of the ball and socket hinge members on the other edge is in the plane of the bottom face. The blanks are connected together in a like edge-to-like edge fashion and indicia provided to identify the nasal side of the blank alternates from side to side when the blanks are interconnected in a chain.

  • Patent number: 4758485
Abstract: An audiovisual slide show is recorded by collecting a set of slides having pictures dealing with a broad topic. A strip of laser recording material is disposed on each slide. A laser writes a data pattern corresponding to spoken words on the strip. The words give a self-contained characterization of the picture on a slide. A subset of slides is selected from the set of slides so as to form a slide show. The slides have a photographic image mounted in a holder. A strip of laser recording optical data material is disposed on the border of the holder or on the film adjacent to the image. The strips can store about fifty seconds of human speech or ten times as much artificial speech, such as phoneme speech.
