  • Patent number: 5757581
Abstract: In a casing 4 formed into a cylindrical container, there are magnetic disc media 6 installed rotatably at a high rotational speed, magnetic heads 5 in contact with recording surfaces of the magnetic disc media 6, fibrous pads 11 projecting radially inwardly from a circumferential wall 2 of the casing 4, impregnated with lubricant and disposed in contact with the recording surfaces of the magnetic disc media, and a porous material 12 disposed in the inner surface of the circumferential wall 2 and in contact with the fibrous pads 11. The lubricant L that has flown from the recording surfaces to the peripheral portion is absorbed to the porous material 12 due to a centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the magnetic disc media 6 moves to the fibrous pads 11 by a capillary action to be fed again to the recording surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5757585
Abstract: The present invention accommodates, in an integrated suspension assembly for a magnetic disk storage system, tolerances in the lead and slider position in a manner to maintain gimbal integrity, minimize static attitude variation and reduce stress build up in the lead. In one aspect of the present invention, the nominal lead position and slider position are chosen such that the distance between them in an overlapping interference manner is no more than (a+b), the sum of the extreme tolerance a of the lead position and extreme tolerance b of the slider position. This is to ensure at least line to line contact between the slider and the leads, in an interference type contact configuration. In another aspect of the present invention, the ends of the leads are coated with a layer of solder material which can be reflowed to form a solder joint bonding the contacting leads to the slider.

  • Patent number: 5754370
Abstract: The present invention provides a new tab structure for a head suspension assembly in a magnetic storage system. In the prior art method of assembly, a harness temporarily holds a wire assembly. The present invention eliminates the need for the harness, thereby reducing the number of parts and steps as well as improving productivity and quality. A flexure of a suspension assembly must be manufactured very precisely. The present invention provides a new tab structure either integral with or separate from the flexure. Wires bridge over to an extension on the tab structure at a predetermined distance from the end of the load beam. Positioning holes, using the extreme flatness of the tab structure, align the wires with the bonding pads of a head. The suspension assembly is subsequently bonded to the head, and the unwanted tab structure is removed to complete the head suspension assembly.

  • Patent number: 5742449
Abstract: A rotating magnetic storage device is shown wherein the transducer and media are separated during operation by a thin film of low viscosity liquid lubricant that is recirculated from a reservoir within the head-media enclosure. Lubricant recirculation can be effected by capillary action using a wick, mechanical pumping and metering or distillation techniques. As compared to devices using air bearing separation, the transducer carrying slider has very small bearing surfaces which may be in the form of narrow rails or small depending foot elements. This enables fly heights of 2 microinches using a film of one micron thickness.

  • Patent number: 5739987
Abstract: A read transducer assembly includes a giant magnetoresistive structure in magnetic contact with a multilayered biasing structure that includes layers of antiferromagnetic material interleaved with layers of soft magnetic material. The magnetic exchange coupling between the antiferromagnetic layers and the soft magnetic layers results in a bias field to the giant magnetoresistive structure that reduces or eliminates side reading by the read transducer assembly. The multilayered biasing structure is located adjacent to and in magnetic contact with either the end or the top surfaces of the giant magnetoresistive structure.

  • Patent number: 5739975
Abstract: A memory storage module for storing and accessing information which includes a flat storage medium having an X-axis and a Y-axis. A plurality of read/write heads are coupled to a head array assembly which is capable of motion along the X-axis. The head array assembly positions the heads adjacent to the medium. An X-axis motor is coupled to the head array assembly and causes the heads to undergo reciprocating substantially linear motion along the X-axis of the medium. A Y-axis motor creates linear motion between the heads and the medium along the Y-axis of the medium. The heads are controlled to store or access information on the medium as the heads move across the X-axis of the medium. The Y-axis motor moves the heads from track to track along the Y-axis of the medium. The Y-axis motor can be connected to move either the medium or the head array assembly along the Y-axis.

  • Patent number: 5739988
Abstract: A spin valve magnetoresistive (MR) read sensor is provided wherein the free and pinned layer magnetization are perpendicular to each other under quiescent conditions and the current flowing in the free MR layer is oriented to flow at a substantially 45 degree angle with respect to the free layer magnetization. The flow of the current at the 45 degree angle with respect to the free layer magnetization causes the AMR effect which is present in the free MR layer to be added to the spin valve sensor GMR effect and increases the overall magnetoresistive effect by about 25% to 33%.

  • Patent number: 5737159
Abstract: In a thin film magnetic disk, a micro projections are formed on a substrate in a circumferential direction. A height of the micro projections is several nm to several tens of nm and a density of the micro projections is several hundred pcs/mm to several tens of thousands of pcs/mm.sup.2. With this arrangement, a magnetic disk fulfilling a head floating characteristic of a narrow space and further fulfilling a mechanical anti-sliding characteristic such as a contact start-stops characteristic and a head stickiness and the like is provided so that high reliability is attained. In the thin film magnetic disk, a bearing ratio curve of a sectional shape measured in a radial direction of the textured substrate has a bearing ratio of 0.1 to 10% at the surface layer (a cutting height of 5 to 10 nm). In this way, a pressure receiving area under a sliding of the magnetic head is increased.

  • Patent number: 5737149
Abstract: A floppy disk drive having a drive lever for driving a floppy disk. The drive lever is made from a low-cost metal plate and is elastically supported by a coil spring, thereby reducing the manufacturing cost. The drive lever has an arcuate shape which is bent inwardly in such a manner that an outward force of the drive lever is increased, thereby reducing friction and abrasion of the driving pin. The floppy disk drive has a rotor case of a driving motor, and a drive lever disposed at an inner bottom portion of the rotor case. The drive lever has a first end at which the driving pin protrudes through an opening in the rotor case, and a second opposite end which is secured to the case by a screw surrounded by the coil spring. Due to the coil spring, the drive lever offers elastic resistance when the driving pin is engaged in an engagement hole of a floppy disk hub. The drive lever is straight or has an arcuate shape which is bent inwardly.
