  • Patent number: 7017855
Abstract: Successive machine reels are reeled from a paper web (W) so the machine reel (R) that is becoming full is reeled in contact with a movable pressing device (5) at a second reeling nip (N2) in a final stationary reeling station apart from a device (1) forming a first reeling nip (N1). A new, empty reel spool (2) is taken to a transfer device (6) and the change is conducted when the reel spool is located in the transfer device (6). The reel spool (2) with machine reel (R) is transferred after the change by the transfer device (6), while in nip contact with the pressing device (5) away from the first nip contact (N1) to the final reeling station, where the machine reel is reeled so that it becomes full, in nip contact (N2) with the pressing device (5), whereafter the transfer device returns to the change station.

  • Patent number: 6981670
Abstract: A linear material reel design promotes the uniform spooling of a linear material around a reel drum, while also reducing stress acting on the end of the linear material that is connected to the drum. A connector ramp has a connector face generally perpendicular to the outer surface of the drum and is configured to orient the connecting section of a linear material substantially parallel to the outer surface of the drum. A guide groove promotes uniformity of spooling. A retraction limiting band maintains a length of the linear material wrapped around the drum. The retraction limiting band, guide groove, and connector ramp can be employed together or independently. Methods of spooling linear material with the use of such apparatus are also provided.

  • Patent number: 6971605
Abstract: A cable take-up device has a central spool situated between opposing first and second spool end walls, wherein the first spool end wall is rotatable and bears a cable guide thereon which reciprocates along the length of the spool during such rotation. Cable inserted through a cable guide aperture in the cable guide is thereby wound about and along the length of the spool when the first spool end wall is rotated to cause the cable guide to orbit the spool. The first spool end wall preferably bears a feed aperture therein which feeds cable into the cable guide aperture in a direction oriented generally axially with respect to the spool, with the feed aperture being defined within a feed tube which protrudes from the first spool end wall to define a cranking handle.

  • Patent number: 6959885
Abstract: A double-wound center-feed roll is disclosed which is formed from at least two webs each having lines of weakness which allow the webs to be separated into a plurality of sheets. The lines of weakness of one web are offset from those of the other such that in use the sheets can be dispensed singly from alternate webs. A first portion of the webs at the center of the roll is lightly bonded together while a second portion of the webs on the outside of the roll remains unbonded. The center-feed roll of the present invention reduces the occurrence of both web orientation reversal and streaming dispensing problems.

  • Patent number: 6948675
Abstract: The invention proposes an apparatus (100) for winding a cable-like material (200), having a winding arrangement (150), a first gripping arrangement (130), for linearly advancing the leading end of the cable-like material (200) and for transferring the same to the winding arrangement (150), and a second gripping arrangement (140), for receiving the abovementioned leading end of the cable-like material from the winding arrangement (150) and for moving this leading end linearly away from the winding arrangement (150). It is possible for the first gripping arrangement (130) to grip the trailing end of the cable-like material (200) and, in conjunction with the second gripping arrangement, even it out to a predetermined difference between the ends. In specific configurations, the winding arrangement (150) has a coil gripper (154), with which the winding operation can be carried out on a winding container (152).

  • Patent number: 6945490
Abstract: A traveling yarn tension compensating system having a pair of vertically disposed, horizontally spaced ball-type yarn tensioning units and a yarn tension compensating device disposed therebetween. The device has a yarn engaging element with a yarn engaging surface that is downwardly convex for engaging a yarn thereunder. The surface is fixed so as not to rotate or otherwise move in the direction of travel of the yarn and is made of a material that imposes a tension increasing frictional drag on the traveling yarn. The surface engaging element is mounted to be freely movable vertically in response to tension in the traveling yarn. The convex shape of the yarn engaging surface results in a greater extent of surface engagement of the yarn when the surface engaging element is in a lower position resulting from lesser tension in the yarn and at which position it deflects the yarn downwardly over the yarn guides.

  • Patent number: 6935590
Abstract: A flexible member sensor for detecting motion and tension of a flexible member includes a rigid member pivotally connected to a base, in contact with the flexible member. A sensor detects pivotal motion of the rigid member in response to movement of the flexible member. The sensor may provide a corresponding signal to a motion control system that adjusts the tension of the flexible member accordingly. In one implementation, the flexible member sensor is integrated with a feedback control system for an electric seat belt retractor that includes a feedback control loop. The flexible member sensor measures tension in seat belt webbing retained by the retractor. A motor coupled to a servo amplifier rotates a spool of the electric retractor to extract or retract webbing in accordance with the output of the flexible member sensor. The seat belt tension may thus be continuously maintained at a desired level.

  • Patent number: 6929209
Abstract: Disclosed is an automatically retracting cardholder or accessory holder which, when worn, retains and automatically reestablishes the desired orientation of the card or accessory to user. A longitudinally flexible tape is used, with a non-circular cross-sectional geometry having a long and short axis and lateral stiffness. The tape passes through an orifice in the housing that geometrically corresponds to the shape of the tape, thereby obviating the tape from passively rotating about its long axis, or, due to the inherent memory of the long axis rotation of the tape, automatically reestablishing the desired orientation of the tape rotation if the tape is twisted by the user. The means for attaching the card or other accessory to the tape is such that the orientation of the accessory to the tape is fixed. Thus, the orientation of the card or accessory to the housing, and consequently the user wearing the housing, is fixed thereby.
