  • Patent number: 5848761
Abstract: A slitting and transporting roller of the described type for sheets of material is suitable particularly as a mating roller in an apparatus for winding up sheets of film, paper and similar materials coming in continuously. In the inner cavity of the roller, a separator is inserted, which forms with the periphery of the roller the boundary at least one pressure space which extends essentially axially over the whole axial length of the roller and is in contact over penetrating boreholes in the roller sheath with the surroundings. Outside of the region of the penetrating boreholes the periphery of the roller additionally is provided with a penetrating slot, which extends, in turn, essentially over the whole axial length of the roller, for a separating slitter supported in the inner cavity of the roller.

  • Patent number: 5845867
Abstract: A turret winder for winding web material on spindle-supported cores has a turret which is moveable into three indexing positions, one of which is a web transfer, cutting and winding station, and another of which is a winding completion station. Frames adjacent to the turret support carriages which support a secondary lay-on roll. The carriages include a primary carriage which is moveable vertically with respect to the turret and a lay-on roll carriage which is moveable horizontally with respect to the primary carriage. The lay-on roll carriage has an arm which is engaged by the turret during movement of the spindle between the above two positions so that arcuate movement of the spindle is translated to movement of the lay-on roll carriage in such a manner that the lay-on roll accurately follows the movement as the building roll moves to the winding completion station.

  • Patent number: 5845862
Abstract: A circular crown shaped pressure disk (1), furnished with, on its external rim, jutting stirrup shaped, flexible elements (2) whose size makes them press on the internal surface of the drum (7) within which the disk is housed. The internal rim of the disk is equipped with winglets (3) and with flexible tabs (5) directed nearly tangentially in respect to the tubular trunk (8), placed at the center of the drum (7). The flexible tabs are for stopping the rise of the bundle of coils so as to impede their knotting and to help guiding the wire, as it is pulled to the outside of the drum and unwound from the bundle.

  • Patent number: 5845868
Abstract: An apparatus and method for winding tissue webs into a parent roll includes a rotatable reel drum having a flexible outer shell for engaging a web of tissue paper against a reel spool. A deflection sensor is mounted adjacent to the inner surface of the outer shell for measuring the amount of deflection of the flexible outer shell caused by the paper roll. The amount of deflection is related to the pressure at the nip point and, by moving the reel spool and flexible reel drum away from each other as the diameter of the paper roll increases, the pressure can be controlled at a desired level. Accordingly, a predetermined light nip pressure can be applied to the roll as the tissue web is wound thereon and large parent rolls of high bulk tissue can be manufactured with desired properties when unwound.

  • Patent number: 5842663
Abstract: The winding of tape into pads is effected on a machine which controls the tension in the tape as it is laid onto the pad by a lay-on roller which also drives the rotation of the pad. A pad is a spiral winding of tape in which each turn of tape is laid directly on top of the previous turns. The machine includes a series of cores one for each tape mounted on a shaft for independent rotation of each core relative to the shaft. The tape is directed from common guide rollers to a series of individual arms one for each tape with each arm being mounted on a shaft for individual adjustment along the length of the shaft to a position associated with the particular core. The shaft drives a lay-on roller at an outer end of the arm and the arm can pivot about the shaft to accommodate changes in diameter of the package as built.

  • Patent number: 5839688
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a roll or log of bathroom tissue or kitchen toweling with a pattern being repeated between each pair of transverse perforations wherein an extensible web having a pattern thereon repeated at equally longitudinally spaced position is advanced along a path toward a rewinder having a knife-equipped perforator and a cutoff mechanism. A detector senses the position of each pattern and also sensed is the position of the perforation knife with the positions being reported to a controller. The perforation knife is adjusted to insure that each perforation is between pattern positions and the cutoff mechanism is adjusted to stay in time with the transverse lines of perforations to provide a selected count of patterns in each winding cycle.

  • Patent number: 5836533
Abstract: Servomechanisms (58 and 60) control a takeup reel (12) and a tension arm (16) in a cassette recorder. The servomechanisms receive control signals (54 and 56) generated in accordance with respective control functions, each of which includes a respective constituent function of the difference between a commanded tension-arm position and a measured tension-arm position. In a position of the tension arm that prevails at the beginning of tape threading the constituent of the tension-arm control function that depends on this arm-position error is a relatively large contribution and gradually decreases to zero as the tension arm moves to the position that it assumes for normal recording and playback. During the same time, the the constituent of the reel-control function that depends on arm-position error begins at zero and gradually increases. Such a gradual transfer of position-error-based control suppresses tape-tension transients that would otherwise result.

  • Patent number: 5836537
Abstract: An apparatus for conveniently storing and retrieving leads associated with a patient monitor in a medical room. The apparatus comprises a rectangular plate having opposed top and bottom edges and opposed left and right edges. For each of the monitor leads a pair of spaced-apart, opposed hooks is mounted on the plate near opposed edges, with each of the hooks comprising a stem having a first end in contact with the plate and a second, opposite end and a longitudinal axis. An arm extends perpendicularly outwardly from the stem second end. At least one of each pair of hooks also has a means for allowing rotation of the stem and arm about the longitudinal axis. Accordingly, each of the cords can be wrapped around a pair of hooks for storage when the arms are facing away from each other and the cords can removed from storage by rotating the at least one hook so the arm faces toward the other of the pair.
