  • Patent number: 10003420
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for a media guidance application that mitigates the frustration that a user experiences in response to encountering poor-quality media content. For example, in response to determining that media content (e.g., a television program) received/retrieved by a user is of low quality, the media guidance application may recommend one or more actions to alleviate the user's frustration. For example, the media guidance application may find a high-quality version of the media content, offer discounts, credits, etc., on the low-quality media content, find an alternative source of the media content, etc. Alternatively or additionally, the media guidance application may recommend related media content (e.g., a different television program) and/or offer discounts, credits, etc., for the related media content.

  • Patent number: 9998798
Abstract: The present technique relates to a reception device, a reception method, a transmission device, and a transmission method, capable of flexibly supporting various operation modes. A service package unit processes, on a per-service basis, using an IP address included in each of packets, a particular service and a shared service related to the particular service, among a plurality of services transmitted via a broadcast wave of digital broadcasting using an IP transmission scheme. Accordingly, it is possible to flexibly support various operation modes in the digital broadcasting using the IP transmission scheme. It would be possible, for example, to apply the present technique to a television receiver.

  • Patent number: 9992538
Abstract: Systems and methods disclosed herein provide for determining changes in the device engagement data as a video advertisement is played on a video application executing in a mobile computing device. A user engagement engine collects device engagement data over multiple intervals of playback of the video advertisement. The device engagement data includes data indicating the spatial orientation of the mobile computing device and data indicating the volume level. The user engagement engine also calculates the differences in the device engagement data from a first interval of playback to a second interval of playback of the video advertisement. The mobile computing device transmits the changes in the device engagement data to an advertising server. The advertising server uses the changes in the device engagement data to determine a cost-per-impression value of the video advertisement.

  • Patent number: 9961373
Abstract: A vehicle entertainment system including a server storing media files, and smart monitors. Each smart monitor presents media selections corresponding to the media files and receives an input from passengers for playing a selection. Each smart monitor includes local content storage storing a subset of the media files. A network connects the smart monitors and server. Program logic executed by each smart monitor performs tasks including determining if a media file corresponding to an input is available from a first source, and if available, playing the media file from the first source; if the media file is not available there, determining if the media file required is available from a second source and if available, playing the media file from the second source; and if the media file is not available from the second source, determining if the media file is available from a third source.

  • Patent number: 9960868
Abstract: An end user can sample a radio or television broadcast, generate a user representation of the broadcast sample, and send the user representation to a comparison system, which also receives known representations of content broadcast by multiple different stations. The known representations are stored in a continuous fashion, and represent actually broadcast content. The comparison system identifies the source of the broadcast sample by comparing the user representation to the known representations associated with each of the different stations using a bit count method, such as the Hamming distance. By comparing two representations of content that was actually broadcast, a broadcast source can be identified without requiring the use of watermarks, timestamps, or a database of discreet content items.

  • Patent number: 9942343
Abstract: A client device implements a streaming client and a proxy server. The proxy server intercepts one or more playlist requests from the streaming client directed to one or more network servers external to the client device. Responsive to interception of a sliding-window playlist request of a particular type, the proxy server generates a corresponding on-demand playlist request. The intercepted sliding-window playlist request and the corresponding on-demand playlist request are sent from the proxy server to the one or more network servers. The proxy server receives an on-demand playlist from the one or more network servers responsive to the on-demand playlist request, and generates a local copy of the on-demand playlist. A current version of the local copy of the on-demand playlist is subsequently provided by the proxy server to the streaming client responsive to interception in the proxy server of a request from the streaming client for the on-demand playlist.

  • Patent number: 9930381
Abstract: Network signals in a broadcast network can include ancillary data as well as audio and visual of a media presentation. Typically, the ancillary data is not displayed by the television when outputting the audio and visual data although it may be in some cases. To ensure the network signal is compatible with the components in the broadcast network, the embodiments herein test the network signal use an emulated version of the broadcast network. For example, the content provider can set up a local version of broadcast network using the hardware components of the broadcast network (e.g., a cable head end, network modulators, set top boxes, receivers, etc.). By transmitting the network signal through the emulated broadcast network, the content provider can verify that the ancillary data will be correctly transmitted through the actual broadcast network.

  • Patent number: 9917703
Abstract: A distributed content rendering system has a distributed communication structure (14, 14b) coupled between a stream source and a rendering device. A remote control device of the system has a “most recent” button. Control information is gathered for one or more streams of which rendering has been most recently started anywhere via the communication structure (14, 14b) before actuation of the “most recent” button (160). When actuation of the “most recent” button (160) is detected in association with the rendering device (10), one of the one or more streams selected and the information is used to direct that stream at the rendering device (10) that is associated with the actuated.
