  • Patent number: 3944837
Abstract: Instead of supplying all electrical current for residences or similar buildings from a single central station by way of distribution power lines, each building is also provided with its own engine-driven electrical generator the output terminals of which are connected to the power lines. The heat from the engine in each building is used in satisfying the thermal load for that building, for example to heat the building and the domestic hot water, and/or to supply heat for heat-input forms of air conditioners or refrigerators. Thermostatic control is used to turn the engine on and off as needed to perform its heating function. The electrical current generated while the engine is running is used to supply part or all of the electrical load in the building, and any excess is supplied to the distribution power lines. A two-way watt-hour meter registers the net electrical power flow in or out of the building to enable securing of credit for the current delivered to the power lines from each building.

  • Patent number: 3943372
Abstract: A combined cycle electric power plant includes gas and steam turbines and steam generators and a digital/analog control system. The control system includes an automatic control and a backup control which are interfaced to operate the gas turbine throttle valve for speed and load control purposes and to provide for manual/auto transfers. The backup control includes a startup control which functions on the basis of a feedforward fuel schedule ramp function. Between ignition speed and 78% synchronous speed, the ramp function is a linear function of fuel demand versus speed with a predetermined slope. From 78% of synchronous speed to idle speed, the ramp function is a linear function with a lesser slope.

  • Patent number: 3943373
Abstract: A gas turbine power plant is provided with an industrial gas turbine which drives a generator coupled to a power system through a breaker. The turbine-generator plant is operated by a hybrid control system having digital function capability during sequenced startup, synchronizing, load buildup and steady state load, and shutdown operations. The control system also contains monitoring and protective subsystems which function through all stages of operation, with redundancy and permissive features which maximize turbine availability.

  • Patent number: 3937974
Abstract: The instant invention describes an improvement in a starter-generator arrangement in which a dynamoelectric machine is driven as a brushless DC motor to start a dynamic load such as a jet engine and as a cynchronous constant frequency generator after the jet engine is ignited and brought up to speed. A plurality of cycloconverters utilizing phase controlled rectifier banks are operated from a constant frequency supply source to supply current to the armature windings of the machine in the starting mode. Position sensing elements such as Hall generators sense the rotor position relative to the machine windings and generate enabling signals to control conduction of the phase controlled rectifiers to supply current to the proper armature windings so that the machine functions essentially as a DC brushless motor to drive a dynamic load such as a jet engine.

  • Patent number: 3938014
Abstract: A brushless d-c motor of the type having a permanent magnet rotor and a plurality of stator windings which are energized from a common d-c power source through transistors in response to means which detect the rotating position of the rotor in a manner such that the conductance of the transistors are so controlled as to ensure proper rotation, in which, means are provided for detecting the currents flowing through the stator windings and the outputs of these means used to control the transistors supplying current to the stators such as to equalize the current flow from stator winding to stator winding, thereby permitting transistors having unmatched gains to be used in the motor.

  • Patent number: 3934181
Abstract: The control system includes a plurality of light responsive devices and a mask structure having a part which is movable with respect to the devices to control the transmission of light thereto. The movable part of the mask structure may be a ball-like member, which is universally supported in a spherical receptacle which supports the light responsive devices. Four light responsive devices may be used, with the mask structure having a portion with a variable width slot associated with each device, so that as the ball-like member is pivoted universally to control the light transmitted through the slots to the devices, electrical signals are produced which represent the movement. The light responsive devices have an electrical characteristic which changes with the light applied thereto to produce electrical signals, and are connected in a control circuit so that signals therefrom control apparatus, such as drive units for controlling the movement of a device.

  • Patent number: 3932719
Abstract: A single pull-rod mechanism operatively arranged externally of gas insulated sealed enclosures for actuating the several contacts and associated blast valves of one or more circuit breakers. The mechanism is external of the enclosure to facilitate adjustment and servicing without the necessity of breaching the integrity of the gas sealed enclosures. Also provided is a selective mechanism for insuring that the blast valves are in closed positions and recoupled to the actuating mechanisms prior to the opening movement of the contacts.

  • Patent number: 3932793
Abstract: To obtain in a brushless d-c motor a speed control signal which is dependent both on rotational speed and on armature current in a predetermined mix, each of n armature winding has a diode connected thereto with one terminal, all terminals of the diodes being connected together to provide a first control voltage which coupled out from the windings during current flow therethrough and is representative of a composite of the emf induced by the field of the rotor in the n armature windings and of resistance voltage drop due to the current flow through the respective armature windings; resistors have one terminal, each, connected to the same n respective armature windings and the other terminals together to provide a common resistor junction at which a second control voltage is derived representative of 1/n of the resistance voltage drop due to current flow through said n armature windings.
