Patent number: 9808175Abstract: A technique for reliably measuring brain atrophy based on image data, such as data collected as part of an MRI scan of a subject's brain. Rather than measure anatomical features of the brain in one of the scan planes as output by an MRI system, the image data is reformatted to generate a slice that may be transverse to those scan planes. The transverse slice is generated by determining a location of anatomical landmarks and reformatting the image data to represent a slice through these anatomical landmarks. The Anterior and Posterior Commissures are useful landmarks and ventricle area is a useful characteristic to measure from the slice. The rate of change of this measured characteristic can be tracked to determine disease progression and may be useful for diagnosis or evaluation of treatments, and the technique may be applied during clinical trials.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2010Date of Patent: November 7, 2017Assignee: PAREXEL International CorporationInventor: James F. Patent number: 9691043Abstract: A sample, which is embedded in a paraffin block, is placed on a tissue cassette (22) which carries a label (20) which may a bar code. When the sample is to be processed, the cassette is given to a microtome operator who scans the label (20) with, for example, a bar code reader (4). Scanning causes information to be displayed on a screen (12) and the operator verifies that what is on the screen matches what was on the label. The paraffin block is then placed in a microtome chuck (26) and sections are cut from the block. Concurrently with, or prior to sectioning, a number of slides (18) are dispensed (2) and are printed with a label (16) so that the sections can be mounted thereon. The slide label (16) is related to the cassette label (20).Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2007Date of Patent: June 27, 2017Assignee: LEICA BIOSYSTEMS MELBOURNE PTY LTDInventor: Phillip Clyde Roberts Gurney

Patent number: 9466040Abstract: Precise prediction of the state of congestion in an automatic analysis system and adjustment of timings and the order of take-in and take-out of specimens in each of devices prevent increase in TATs of urgent specimens. A device management server for instructing each device to take in or take out specimens in each device determines the current position of each specimen, estimates the staying time of each specimen in one of regions by simulating the operation of each device assuming an initial state in which each specimen is at the current position, causes the simulation unit to perform a simulation, and corrects the timings or order of take-in and take-out of one or more other specimens so that each of the staying times in one of the regions do not exceed a corresponding allowable staying time in the region.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 2011Date of Patent: October 11, 2016Assignee: HITACHI HIGH-TECHNOLOGIES CORPORATIONInventors: Yoshiyuki Tajima, Takashi Noguchi, Shigeru Yano, Koji Kamoshida

Patent number: 9086356Abstract: Dual-energy absorptiometry is used to estimate visceral fat metrics and display results, preferably as related to normative data. The process involves deriving x-ray measurements for respective pixel positions related to a two-dimensional projection image of a body slice containing visceral fat as well as subcutaneous fat, at least some of the measurements being dual-energy x-ray measurements, processing the measurements to derive estimates of metrics related to the visceral fat in the slice, and using the resulting estimates. Processing the measurements includes an algorithm which places boundaries of regions, e.g., a large “abdominal” region and a smaller “abdominal cavity” region. Two boundaries of the “abdominal cavity” region are placed at positions associated with the left and right innermost extent of the abdominal muscle wall by identifying inflection of % Fat values.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2011Date of Patent: July 21, 2015Assignee: HOLOGIC, INC.Inventors: Thomas L. Patent number: 9037477Abstract: A computer-implemented method for evaluating ambulatory electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring of cardiac rhythm disorders is provided. A patient is registered online and medical records for the patient are assembled. An ambulatory ECG monitor that includes leadless integrated sensing electrodes independently suspended from a flexible housing, is registered to the patient. An electrocardiogram is retrieved from the recording circuitry. The electrocardiogram and the medical records are evaluated against diagnostic criteria. Upon making a finding when the diagnostic criteria is met, the patient is referred to a cardiac rhythm specialist online, which includes sending the cardiac rhythm abnormality finding. As a result, both physicians and patients enjoy an ease-of-use not found with conventional ambulatory ECG monitors.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 2010Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Assignee: CARDIAC SCIENCE CORPORATIONInventors: Gust H.
