Abstract: Process for the .alpha.-chlorination of phenylacetonitriles, for example benzyl cyanide, in which the phenylacetonitrile is contacted with a suitable chlorinating agent, sulphuryl chloride or chlorine gas, while an amount of strong acid, preferably HCl, is also present in the reaction mixture. The induction time and the reaction rate are dependent on, among other factors, the concentration of the acid. Preferably, the reaction is carried out under pressure. The reaction is well controllable.

Abstract: The bisulfite adduct of a carbonyl compound, amine, and alkali metal cyanide are reacted in aqueous media to form an organic layer containing the desired .alpha.-aminonitrile product and an aqueous layer containing alkali metal sulfite. The aqueous layer, after separation from the organic layer, can be used as the reaction medium in a fresh reaction of bisulfite adduct, amine and alkali metal cyanide after its pH has been adjusted to the moderately acidic range, e.g., a pH of about 4 to about 5.

Abstract: The invention provides a new sub-class or organic peroxyacids comprising N-alkyl substituted peroxytrimellitimide of formula (I) in which R=hydrogen or linear or branched alkyl, which demonstrates an excellent combination of safe-handling and bleach performance rendering the sub-class particularly suitable for use as bleach and/or disinfectant in various bleach, bleach additive or washing compositions. Effective bleaching peroxyacids include those in which R=n propyl, iso-propyl, n butyl, sec-butyl, n pentyl and n heptyl. The invention also comprises processes for making the peroxyacids, compositions containing them and processes for washing and/or bleaching and/or disinfecting employing the invention peroxyacids or compositions containing them.
Abstract: A process for the production of an ethylenically unsaturated nitrile from a hydrocarbon feed stream comprised of a mixture of an alkene and an alkane by reaction with an oxygen-containing gas and ammonia. The alkene is converted to unsaturated nitrile by reaction with the oxygen and ammonia in the presence of a suitable catalyst in a first ammoxidation reactor; the nitrile product is recovered from the product stream; some of the byproduct carbon oxides and some of the inert gas introduced into the system with the reactants are removed from product stream and the remainder of this stream, now rich in unreacted alkene and alkane, and containing the rest of the byproduct gases and inert gases is introduced with additional oxygen-containing gas and ammonia into a second ammoxidation reactor which contains a catalyst that catalyzes reaction between the alkane, oxygen and ammonia to produce additional unsaturated nitrile.
Abstract: N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)acetamide is improved in thermal stability by adding about 0.01 to 5 mol % of a 2-mercaptobenzothiazole or a salt thereof thereto.
Abstract: A process for preparing nonaromatic N,N,N-trisubstituted nitrogen-containing compounds which comprises heating a nonaromatic carboxylated N,N,N-trisubstituted nitrogen-containing compound at an elevated temperature for a period of time sufficient to produce the nonaromatic N,N,N-trisubstituted nitrogen-containing compound.
