  • Patent number: 3939740
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the removal of tobacco cuttings in the wrapper cutting portion of a cigar making machine in which a hollow, rotatable die turret having a pair of hollow die units on its upper surface, air openings at its lower surface and passageways from such openings to the interior of the units, is rotatably mounted on a stationary support having a pair of air chambers therein with openings in the upper wall thereof which permit air to flow into or out of the turret passageways through the openings at its lower surface at various portions of the cycle of rotation of the turret. Each die unit has holes around the periphery of the cutting edge which extend into the die unit interior. One of the chambers is kept continuously under vacuum so that during part of the rotation of the turret, air is drawn through the die unit holes to maintain a strip of tobacco on top of a die unit.

  • Patent number: 3937227
Abstract: A tobacco leaf curing system comprising an air tight curing house divided by a porous floor plate into an upper curing barn and a lower blast chamber, the curing barn being provided at its upper portion with a circulation port and an outlet port; a circulation duct passageway containing duct fan means and heating means, said circulation duct passageway communicating with the circulation port for drawing air from the curing barn, said air being compressed by said duct fan means and heated by said heating means and then reintroduced into the blast chamber through a blast port; an automatic temperature regulator associated with the burner of the heating means for automatically igniting or extinguishing said burner according to variations appearing on a wet-bulb temperature sensor so as to regulate the temperature and humidity of the air to be sent to the blast chamber; an inlet control system comprising a cylindrical damper provided with openings and located in said circulation duct system, said inlet control sy

  • Patent number: 3933160
Abstract: This invention concerns improvements relating to tobacco-smoke filters, particularly cigarette filters, and to a method and apparatus for their production. According to the invention in a tobacco-smoke filter composed of absorbent paper and a filtering composition comprising a tow of fibrous or filamentary material, such as cellulose acetate, fibrillated or filamentary polypropylene, viscose or the like, associated with the paper in superimposed layers which are rolled or folded substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the filter, the absorbent paper and filtering composition are in the form of strips extending longitudinally of the filter, the filtering-composition strip having a greater width than the paper strip and being so associated with the paper strip that it covers one face of the latter and is folded over along the two longitudinal edges of the paper strip to cover at least part and preferably the whole of the other face thereof.

  • Patent number: 3930509
Abstract: A smokers' pipe reamer comprises a hollow body, a forward portion of which has three longitudinally extending radial grooves and bearing slots, each extending radially from a respective one of the grooves to the interior. In each of the grooves a reamer blade is guided, this blade having a U-shaped appendage protruding into the interior. Three pins held in the forward portion of the body extend through the openings of respective ones of the appendages to permit radial and swiveling motion of the respective reamer blades. Radial movement of the blades may be adjusted by a pin having a conical tip adapted to bear against the radially innermost portions of the blade appendages. The pin is adjustable along the longitudinal axis of the reamer body by means of screw threads and a guiding slot, thereby limiting radially inward movement of the appendages and the blades while permitting the blades to swivel about each of the three pins.
