Abstract: The initial step for conventionally reprocessing spent nuclear fuel is to treat the nuclear fuel rods with concentrated nitric acid at elevated temperatures to dissolve out the contents of the fuel rods. The resultant solution contains ruthenium values present in an oxidation state of at least +4 and the presence of such ruthenium values causes intolerably high corrosion of stainless steel equipment which may come in contact with the hot concentrated nitric acid solution. The corrosion of stainless steel from such ruthenium-containing nitric acid solutions may be inhibited by treating the solutions with a reducing agent comprising nitrogen oxide. It is especially convenient to generate the reducing agent in situ by adding a sugar (e.g. sucrose) to the nitric acid solution so as to reduce substantially all of the dissolved ruthenium values having an oxidation state of at least +4 to an oxidation state of less than +4.
Abstract: A process for separation of uranium isotopes by chromatography through an anion exchange material is found to be improved in efficiency of separation as well as in productivity by addition of a catalyst for accelerating electron exchange reactions occurring in the system under conditions to retain uranyl ions on the anion exchange material preferentially over uranous ions.
Abstract: A new hot isostatic pressing method produces sintered material having a very fine structure as well as uniform properties by forming a unique capsule such as a titanium capsule of metal over a presintered material for sintering a ceramic cutting tool material is disclosed.
Abstract: A hydrous gel consisting essentially of a heat-moldable w/o emulsion comprising about 15 to about 95% by weight of a continuous phase of an A-B-A type teleblock copolymeric elastomer and an oil component and about 85 to about 5% by weight of an emulsified dispersed water phase. The hydrous gel is prepared by dissolving the teleblock copolymeric elastomer in an excess of the oil component by heating, adding an emulsifier and water to the solution to disperse the water therein and to form the w/o emulsion, and then cooling the resulting emulsion to room temperature. The hydrous gel finds a wide range of utility, for example, as an insulator, especially to maintain low or high temperature environments, as a fireproofing material, as a heat absorbant, and as a hospital mat.
Abstract: Transient, non-aqueous antifoam compositions which comprise the product resulting from heating a silica filler and a condensation product of a partially hydrolyzed trifunctional silane.
Abstract: Non-aqueous antifoam compositions comprising a lipophilic nonionic surface active agent homogeneously dispersed in a transient non-aqueous siloxanate antifoam agent.
Abstract: The disclosure relates to aqueous compositions which comprise water soluble fluorinated surfactant, fluorinated synergist, ionic non-fluorochemical surfactant, nonionic non-fluorochemical surfactant, electrolyte, and solvent. This composition is a concentrate which when diluted with water spreads on fuel surfaces suppressing vaporization. Because of this property the aqueous solutions of the above compositions are effective as agents for fire fighting.
Abstract: Germ-killing composition produced by contacting an acid material, preferably consisting of at least about 15% by weight of lactic acid, with sodium chlorite in aqueous media, the amount of acid being sufficient to lower the PH of the aqueous media to less than about 7. Methods of disinfecting and sanitizing include application of either the germ killing composition, or reactants providing in situ production thereof, to a germ carrier including substrates of various kinds as well as an enclosed air space.
Abstract: A wood preservative composition for control of wood decay by fungi, which comprises 2H-benzopyran-2-spiro-3'-phthalide or its derivatives such as 6-methyl-2H-benzopyran-2-spiro-3'-phthalide or benzo[f]-2H-benzopyran-2-spiro-3'-phthalide as an active ingredient. The active ingredient has extremely low mammalian toxicity, and exhibits an excellent wood-decay controlling effect.

Abstract: The control apparatus of the invention comprises a feedback system to maintain the level of glucose in a diabetic within predetermined limits. Surgically implanted in the body are a means for sensing glucose levels and a means for dispensing insulin in an amount determined by the sensing mechanism. The sensing mechanism employs a chemical solution, which, like the insulin, is stored within a reservoir forming part of the surgical implant. Means are additionally provided to couple these reservoirs to the surface of the skin so as to permit their rechargings at regular time intervals. Integrated circuit technology is employed to translate an indication of an unacceptable glucose level into an automatic injection of insulin, with the electronics being of the type capable of being powered by batteries of the kind employed in pacemaker technology.
Abstract: The invention relates to mixtures of .alpha.,.alpha.'-bis-(2-hydroxy-3,5-dialkylphenyl)-m-diisopropylbenzene and .alpha.,.alpha.'-bis-(2-hydroxy-3,5-dialkylphenyl)-p-diisopropylbenzen e which contain at least 20% by weight and preferably from 40 to 70% by weight of the m-compound. Moreover, the invention relates to a process for the production of such mixtures. The mixtures are suitable for stabilizing polyurethanes and other synthetic polymers against discoloration and degradation when exposed to visible and/or UV light and/or atmospheric constituents such as oxygen oxides or nitrogen and waste gases from combustion. Particularly, they are suitable for stabilizing threads and foils of these products including coatings.

Abstract: A novel graphite fiber/metal composite material in which the graphite fibers have an adherent coating of silicon oxide and silicon carbide. The coating protects the graphite surface from attack by carbide forming matrix metals such as aluminum, titanium, magnesium and nickel. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the coating is formed by an intermediate temperature vapor deposition technique involving the reduction of silicon tetrachloride in the presence of hydrogen and an oxygen containing gas.
