Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method, system and computer program product for prioritizing traffic flow based on vehicle-caused road degradation. In an embodiment of the invention, a method for prioritizing traffic flow based on vehicle-caused road degradation includes detecting an approaching vehicle in a traffic control system disposed at an intersection governed by the traffic control system, classifying the approaching vehicle and correlating the classification of the approaching vehicle with a road degradation impact resulting from both a deceleration of the approaching vehicle and a subsequent acceleration of the approaching vehicle. The method further includes on condition that the road degradation impact exceeds a permissible impact, transmitting a message to the traffic control system to emit a visual signal permitting the approaching vehicle to pass through the intersection without stopping.
