Abstract: A latex is prepared by polymerizing a polymerizable monomer having an active methylene group in the presence of a hydrophilic polymer. The hydrophilic polymer comprises an isoprene sulfonic acid or salts thereof as a monomer unit. A sheet material is prepared having a support with a hydrophilic layer containing the latex thereon.
Abstract: A method for the preparation of latexes with hollow polymer particles useful as opacifying agents. The process comprises the preparation of hollow polymer particle latex by emulsion copolymerization with water soluble initiator and anionic surfactant as follows: a) preparation of seed latex of copolymer containing methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid; b) preparation of latex of highly carboxylated copolymer containing methyl methacrylate and a cross-linking agent and optionally a vinyl aromatic compound; c) using highly carboxylated latex synthesized at stage b) in the preparation of the intermediate shell comprising a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid ester, a cross-linking agent and optionally vinyl aromatic compound, said intermediate shell copolymer having a glass transition temperature below 80° C.

Abstract: Coatings prepared from water-based compositions comprise an aqueous solution, emulsion, or dispersion of (a) a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer or oligomer having at least one anionic moiety which is capable of reacting with an oxazoline or oxazine moiety; (b) a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymer or oligomer having at least one oxazoline or oxazine moiety; and (c) colloidal silica; at least one of the components (a) and (b) further comprising at least one fluoroaliphatic moiety. The coatings have low surface energy and high abrasion resistance.

Abstract: A terpolymer containing 20 to 70 mole percent of an acid labile repeating unit, 3 to 40 mole percent of an acrylonitrile based repeating unit and a repeating unit containing silicon side chains. The silicon side chain repeating unit is provided in sufficient amounts so that the terpolymer silicon content is 7 to 20 weight percent. The terpolymer is used primarily in the formulation of multilayer positive operating photoresists.
