  • Patent number: 6558637
Abstract: An exhaust emission purifier includes a catalyst unit disposed in an exhaust pipe of an engine. Electrodes (reaction adjustment unit) are provided on a honeycomb carrier of the catalyst unit in a layered form in order to apply an electric field to the vicinity of the catalyst surface to thereby adjust the catalytic reaction. An ECU serves as a status detection unit to detect factors which affect the exhaust gas purifying performance of the catalyst unit (i.e., operating conditions), and serves as a control unit which controls the electric field applied by the electrodes, on the basis of the detected operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 6398920
Abstract: A filter and a method for separating ions in a partially ionized plasma according to their mass includes a chamber with crossed electric and magnetic fields established therein. A feed, including metal atoms having ionization potentials in a low range, and gas atoms having an ionization potential in a high range, is introduced into the chamber. An electron temperature below the low range is generated to partially ionize the feed by dissociating the metal atoms from the gas atoms, and by ionizing the metal atoms into light and heavy ions according to their mass to charge ratio. The light and heavy ions are then influenced by the crossed electric and magnetic fields to separate the light ions from the heavy ions.

  • Patent number: 6319367
Abstract: Plasma treatment for producing carbonaceous field emission electron emitters is disclosed. A plasma of ions is generated in a closed chamber and used to surround the exposed surface of a carbonaceous material. A voltage is applied to an electrode that is in contact with the carbonaceous material. This voltage has a negative potential relative to a second electrode in the chamber and serves to accelerate the ions toward the carbonaceous material and provide an ion energy sufficient to etch the exposed surface of the carbonaceous material but not sufficient to result in the implantation of the ions within the carbonaceous material. Preferably, the ions used are those of an inert gas or an inert gas with a small amount of added nitrogen.

  • Patent number: 6296686
Abstract: Syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, is an intermediate in the conversion of methane to liquid fuels. For certain applications, it is desirable to maintain an H2/CO molar ratio of about 3. This molar ratio is achieved by steam reforming of methane in accordance with: CH4+H2O→3H2+CO. To provide the heat required to drive the endothermic steam reforming reaction, a low grade fuel is combusted in a reactor and the heat of combustion conducted to the endothermic reaction. By using an oxygen selective ion transport membrane element to transport the oxygen required for combustion, the formation of undesirable NOx compounds is minimized.
