Patent number: 6257331Abstract: A downhole assembly for setting a well tool (e.g. packer) comprising a setting tool which has a draw rod made in two portions which are slidably connected to allow relative movement therebetween. The upper portion is releasably latched to the well tool wherein the weight of the well tool is effectively supported by the workstring rather than the draw rod during positioning of the assembly. Upon actuation of the setting tool, the upper portion is released from the well tool thereby allowing movement between the portions to switch the weight of the well tool to the draw rod during the setting of the well tool. By effectively unloading the draw rod during positioning of the assembly, the assembly can be retrieved if necessary without inadvertently setting the well tool or shearing the draw rod.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1999Date of Patent: July 10, 2001Assignee: Atlantic Richfield CompanyInventors: Curtis G. Patent number: 6237686Abstract: A cementing plug has a plurality of body segments which are secured together, preferably by adhesive, to form a plug body. Elastomer wipers are clamped between the body segments. This cementing plug may be readily made shorter or longer in length with an increased or decreased number of wipers. Elastomer covers only the wipers and not the plug body.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1999Date of Patent: May 29, 2001Assignee: Top-Co Industries Ltd.Inventors: Robert Lawrence Ryll, Colin George Reid

Patent number: 6227316Abstract: A nozzle for a drill bit has an adjustable orifice, allowing a single nozzle to change the pressure drop for a given flow rate. This is accomplished by the use of two plates, each having a shaped aperture therein. The degree to which the two apertures are overlapped determines the size of the orifice. The movement of the apertures, and thus the size of the orifice, can be adjusted at the drilling site.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1999Date of Patent: May 8, 2001Assignee: Dresser Industries, Inc.Inventor: Bruce A. Patent number: 6223823Abstract: A method of installing a casing section in a well, by means of first and second connection devices arranged on a tubular lowering device, the first connection device being connected at an upper end of the casing section and the second connection device being connected at a lower end of the casing section, the tubular lowering device extending through the casing section. First and second flow paths are provided to enable fluids from the well to pass through the inside of the casing, as the casing is lowered into the well. A hollow is provided through the second connection device connecting the inside of the tubular lowering device to the outside of the casing. A lockable nonreturn valve is provided in the hollow which permits the well fluids to flow form inside the internal bore of the tubular lowering device to the well outside the section being installed, and also permitting fluids to flow form the well to the inside of the tubular lowering device and thus back to surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1999Date of Patent: May 1, 2001Inventor: Philip Head

Patent number: 6213205Abstract: A pressure activated bendable tool assembly having a longitudinal centerline, the tool assembly comprising an adapter sub for connection to an end of a tubular member having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough and a plurality of bend elements positioned in a serial relationship also having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough, the bore being in fluid communication with the bore of the adapter sub and each adjacent bending element. The bend elements are axially retained by a plurality of retainer sleeves. The retainer sleeves limit the amount the bend elements may be longitudinally displaced from each other about a preselected side of the retainer sleeve element. A head-sub forms a distal end of the tool assembly opposite of the adapter sub.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1999Date of Patent: April 10, 2001Assignee: Halliburton Energy Services, Inc.Inventor: Jim B. Patent number: 6206095Abstract: A plug-dropping head in which the objects to be dropped are placed in individual discrete passages. A motor-driven or hand-operated rotating member orients an entrance to a passage going through it to, in series, individual passages in the housing for sequential dropping of objects downhole. A relief port is provided so that as the rotating outlet member moves from one passage in the housing to the next, the relief passage allows continuing flow delivered by the surface pump.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1999Date of Patent: March 27, 2001Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: John L. Patent number: 6196319Abstract: An apparatus and method for removing sand and other debris from a wellbore. The apparatus is particularly suited for wireline operation, and requires minimal surface equipment. A housing is lowered into the wellbore until the housing is proximate to the sand, and a valve is opened to permit entry of the sand into a housing chamber. The housing can be raised to the wellbore surface so that the sand can be removed from the housing chamber. In one embodiment of the invention, the housing has two chambers each having a floating piston. A liquid is initially retained within the first chamber and is pressurized as the housing is lowered into the wellbore. Activation of a valve and differential pressures acting across the first piston move the liquid into the second chamber and draw the sand into the first chamber. The second chamber captures the liquid and facilitates return of the pistons to the initial position after the sand is emptied from the first chamber.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1999Date of Patent: March 6, 2001Assignee: Western Atlas International, Inc.Inventors: Rudolf Antonius Henskens, David Brands

Patent number: 6196314Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for enhancing hydrocarbon production from a subsurface hydrocarbon-bearing formation. The system includes a mechanical fluid treatment unit that substantially reduces the concentration of precursor ions from the injection water. The treated water is injected under pressure into an injection well to cause the hydrocarbons to flow toward a production well. A chemical unit injects selected amounts of additives into the injection well to inhibit in-situ growth of crystals from insoluble salt precipitates formed due to the interaction of precursor ions present in the injected water and ions residents in the reservoir. The selected chemicals and their respective amounts are determined at least partially based on reservoir characteristics and the concentration of precursor ions in the treated water.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1999Date of Patent: March 6, 2001Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: James C. Patent number: 6145605Abstract: A rotary rock drill bit includes a bit body and three conical roller cutters rotatably mounted thereon. Each roller cutter has at least first, second, and third circumferential rows of buttons spaced apart in the direction of rotation of the roller cutter. The three rows of buttons are arranged successively from a rear end toward a front end of the roller cutter. The buttons of each of the first and second rows have lengths of attack which are longer in a direction of rotation of the roller cutter than in a direction perpendicular thereto. Those longer lengths of attack are also longer than a length of attack of the buttons of the third row in the rotational direction.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1998Date of Patent: November 14, 2000Assignee: Sandvik ABInventor: Lennart Karlsson

Patent number: 6129161Abstract: A rotary drill bit comprises a bit body having a leading face and a gauge region, cutting elements mounted on the bit body, fluid channels extending outwardly across the leading face towards the gauge region, and nozzles for supplying fluid to the channels. At the outer end of each alternate channel, in the gauge region, is an outwardly facing junk slot which extends across only a part of the width of the channel, and a bearing surface which extends across the other part of the channel and bears against a wall of the borehole being drilled. In the channel, inwardly of the bearing surface, is an opening into an enclosed passage which passes internally through the bit body to an outlet. The bearing surfaces at the end of the channels increase the peripheral bearing surface area of the drill bit, thus improving stability, but fluid can still escape from all parts of each channel.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1998Date of Patent: October 10, 2000Assignee: Camco International (UK) LimitedInventors: Tom Scott Roberts, Clive Jarvis
