Patent number: 6913625Abstract: A stent is designed to be placed within a patient's ureter to facilitate drainage from the patient's kidneys to the bladder. An elongated portion of the stent includes a length sufficient to extend substantially within the ureter from the kidney to the bladder, and defines a lumen extending therethrough. A first end portion extends from one end of the elongated portion and is adapted to assume a retaining configuration when placed substantially within the kidney. A second end portion extends from another end of the elongated portion and flares outward when placed substantially within the bladder to maintain position. The second end portion allows fluids to flow through the lumen and into the bladder and is collapsible to prevent fluid from passing from the bladder to the kidney.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2002Date of Patent: July 5, 2005Assignee: SciMed Life Systems, Inc.Inventors: Joseph Segura, James Teague

Patent number: 6818017Abstract: A high gain lens system for implant into the capsular bag after removal of the natural crystalline lens. A preferred embodiment of the invention comprises a combination of a positive or convex lens and a negative or concave lens. These two lenses are spaced from one another and their relative spacing and respective focal lengths determine their combined focal length. When the lens system is inserted into the capsular bag, two opposed haptic flanges on each side, extend toward the inner radial edge of the bag adjacent the ciliary muscles. When the muscles contract, the bag is stretched thereby compressing the haptic flanges together or at least toward one another. This action cause the two lenses to separate further from each other and the increased spacing between the positive and negative lenses shortens the focal length to permit focusing of objects at near distances. On the other hand, when the muscles relax, the bag relaxes also, the haptic flanges separate and the lenses come closer together.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2001Date of Patent: November 16, 2004Inventor: Stephen Shu

Patent number: 6702850Abstract: A stent having a multi-layered coating adhered to its surface which can prevent restenosis and thrombosis at the implant site. The stent coating is comprised of two layers. The first layer is a polymeric coating with one or more biologically active agent(s) dispersed therein. The second layer is comprised of a hydrophobic heparinized polymer that inhibits blood coagulation and provides a hydrophilic surface for reducing the friction between stent and lesion site. In preferred embodiments of the invention, the multi-layered stent is effective in deterring restenosis and thrombosis at the implant site. In these same preferred embodiments, the multi-layered stent is capable of reducing the burst release of the biologically active agents from the first layer and sustaining a release of an effective amount of these agents for a relatively extended period of time. Methods of applying the multi-layered coating to the stent surface are also part of this invention.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: March 9, 2004Assignee: Mediplex Corporation KoreaInventors: Youngro Byun, Jung Han Yoon

Patent number: 6676694Abstract: A first catheter has a return bend formed near its distal free end and a first magnet is mounted on the distal free end. The first catheter is introduced through a sheath in a first common femoral artery into an elongate leg of a stent graft and pulled back until the return bend positions the first magnet near a truncate leg of the stent graft. A second catheter having a second magnet on its distal free end is introduced through a second common femoral artery and positioned near the first magnet so that the magnets become interconnected. The second catheter is pulled into the stent graft, a guide wire is inserted through it, and a second sheath is introduced into the stent graft. Patent number: 6669722Abstract: Disclosed is a stent having improved characteristics of its structural design and improved radiopacity characteristics. Specifically, the present invention is a stent that has circumferential sets of strut members at the ends of the stent and central sets of strut members that are longitudinally placed between the end sets of strut members. Optimal radiopacity is achieved when the end sets of strut members are more radiopaque as compared to the radiopacity of the central sets of strut members. Also disclosed is the concept of adjusting the strut width of the curved sections of the end and central sets of strut members so that equal strain in all curved sections is achieved as the stent is expanded even though the diagonals sections of the end sets of strut members are shorter than the diagonal sections of the central sets of strut members.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2001Date of Patent: December 30, 2003Assignee: Cordis CorporationInventors: Chao Chen, David R.
