  • Patent number: 7416377
Abstract: An improved spoon apparatus and method includes a handle portion carrying a spoon bowl portion. The spoon bowl is clutched non-rotationally to the handle portion during a scooping motion to load the spoon bowl with food. At the initiation of the food scooping motion, essentially immediate clutching of the spoon bowl to the handle portion is effected by a fine-dimension ratchet structure of the inventive spoon. However, as soon as the scooping motion is completed by clearing of the spoon bowl from the food, the bowl portion is unclutched from the handle portion and becomes freely pivotal like a pendulum so as to remain level from side to side irrespective of rotation of the handle portion as a user moves the loaded spoon to the user's mouth. A unique combination of gravitationally induced torque as well as a gravitational force vector are utilized to effect unclutching of the spoon bowl from the handle portion.

  • Patent number: 7404349
Abstract: A system and method for cutting continuous web that provides a simplified and direct feed path during loading, and thereafter a more-complex serpentine feed path at an infeed unit for reliable infeed of the web, arranged as either a free loop or a moderately tensioned configuration. Downstream, an indexing drive intermittently pauses the web for the cutter knife to operate. The indexing drive and infeed unit's drive are synchronized by a controller to produce a small horizontally disposed buffer loop therebetween. The buffer loop is maintained within a predetermined range using a sensor, operatively with the controller, that measures the location of the end of the loop, modulating the drives to maintain the buffer loop's (returning) end within a predetermined location about the sensor's sensing field. The system includes an adjustment drive motor for moving a plurality of edge guide sets toward and away from each other in synchronization.

  • Patent number: 7380340
Abstract: A folding tool with inlay release preferably includes a blade, a lock side plate, a release side plate, a cantilever spring and a release inlay. One end of the blade is pivotally retained between the lock side plate and the release side plate. One end of the cantilever spring is attached to the lock side plate and the other end is biased to contact the one end of the blade. A rocker bar is pivotally retained in the release side plate. One end of the rocker bar captures a biased end of the cantilever spring. The release inlay is used to pivot the other end of the rocker bar to release the one end of the rocker bar to allow the blade to be released from a closed position. A slide lock prevents the rocker bar from being released by the release inlay.

  • Patent number: 7007579
Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously producing pasted positive and negative electrode plates from pasted lead or lead alloy expanded, punched or cast metal mesh strip for use in lead-acid batteries without the use of paper barriers. The heating of cutting devices such as roll-mounted die-cutters to a predetermined temperature range of at least about 150° C., preferably about 160 to 300° C., and more preferably about 180 to 210° C., eliminates sticking of the paste on the pasted metal mesh strip to the cutting devices and obviates the need for the paper barriers.

  • Patent number: 6796211
Abstract: A circle cutting machine includes a template that is removeably installed in the bottom of a base. On the base bottom surface are a number of segments that define respective grooves for receiving the template. The base has a cross-beam that defines an axis of rotation and that receives a handle. On one end of the handle is a crank. The handle second end holds a cutting arm. A handle spring biases the cutting arm to contact the cross-beam. The handle is slideable in the cross-beam to locate the cutting arm below the plane of the base bottom surface for easy removing of the cutting arm from the handle. An adjuster rigidly locks and resiliently unlocks the cutting arm to the handle. The template has a circular periphery that enters the base grooves, and a tab that is between two segments, when the template is installed.

  • Patent number: 5282404
Abstract: A microtome for cutting thin sample sections utilizes an electrical contact or sole plate for guiding the section cutting knife during sectioning. The sole plate floats across the surface of the sample thereby ensuring that uniformly thin sections are cut regardless of movement of the sample or expansion or contraction thereof. An electrical contact may be used to detect and reference contact between the sample surface and the section cutting knife. After contact between the sample surface and section cutting knife is referenced, the relative position between the sample surface and section cutting knife may be adjusted to achieve a desired section thinness.

  • Patent number: 5109740
Abstract: Metal billets are cut from heated logs emerging from a furnace by a shearing system controlled by information detected as the logs emerge from the furnace. Detection in this position eliminates the variations inherently present in the length of the logs resulting from temperature gradients within the furnace, and from a length of time the logs are subject to these gradients. The advancing end of an isolated log is sensed by an electric eye, and the interface between one log and the following log is detected by an eddy current device. The data from these sensing devices is supplied to a computer, which controls the shearing operation so that billets can be cut with a minimum of waste. The billets can be of two segments, and the equipment establishes cutting operations that produce the combined billet length, regardless of the position of the interface between the logs.

  • Patent number: 5090286
Abstract: A food-slicing guide device for guiding a knife in slicing portions of food comprises a platform and a bail. A pair of opposing slots spaced along the lateral edges of the platform are adapted to align the bail either perpendicularly to the platform while using the device as a food-slicing guide, or longitudinally with the platform when storing or transporting the device. The slots are adapted to permit either side or either end of the platform to be used for slicing purposes, thereby permitting the abrasion caused by contact between a slicing utensil and the platform to be distributed at various times at different areas, thus reducing the abrasion effects and extending the useful life of the device. The bail is constructed of resilient material and the interacting corners of the slots are eased whereby the bail readily snaps into slicing position. For storage, the bail pivotally rotates to a resting position in a pair of V-shaped grooves along the edges of the platform.

  • Patent number: 4987811
Abstract: A pair of guide bores in an electric punch support a pair of punching blocks aligned with, and movable into, respective punching holes in a main frame. Two operation arms are pivoted on respective holders and each is connected to one punching block to impart vertical motion thereto. Each operation arm includes a longitudinal guide groove therein. A pair of operation pins are driven in circular paths within the guide grooves to reciprocate the operation arms about their pivots. In the quiescent condition, the one of the guide pins lies at the end of its guide groove, whereas the other guide pin lies about in the middle of its guide groove. A guide concavity at the end of the guide grooves accepts its respective operation pin, whereby the associated operation arm rests at a different rotational position than it would if the guide concavity were omitted. A spring provides a restoring force on the punching block associated with the guide concavity.
