    Abstract: Positive acting differentials of the type having toothed drivers and couplers which automatically connect the two axles together to provide optimum traction for the vehicle, yet releases one axle when the vehicle is proceeding around a curve without drive wheel slippage, whereby only a single axle is engaged through the drive system. In assemblies of the type wherein the axles are retained in the assembly by a C clip, at least one driver is slotted so as to provide space for the insertion of C clip during assembly. This allows selection of the driver and coupler thicknesses without being restricted by the possible positions of the C clip groove in the axles during assembly, and reduces wear in the driver and coupler teeth by eliminating asymmetry between the engaging drivers and couplers. Preferred and some alternate embodiments are disclosed.

    Abstract: An adaptive torque control and distribution system for a motor vehicle having a transfer case, primary driveline and drive wheels and secondary driveline and drive wheels for operation in extreme off road conditions such as sand. The transfer case includes a modulating clutch and a lockup clutch disposed in parallel between its primary (rear) output and secondary (front) output. The system detects abnormally high magnitude and rapidly repeating wheel spin transients which are characteristic of operation in sand or similar highly randomly variable tractive conditions and overrides the on demand torque distribution program for a predetermined time interval. During this predetermined time interval, the transfer case lockup clutch is activated thereby coupling the primary and secondary drivelines and achieving a fifty-fifty torque split therebetween while the modulating clutch is inactive.

    Abstract: A clutched actuator for use in a transfer case is disclosed which may be used in conjunction with electronic traction control systems and anti-lock braking systems where the clutched actuator system is required to quickly disengage the four-wheel drive of the vehicle. The clutched actuator is operably coupled to the transfer case of the vehicle drive system through a sector plate. The clutched actuator includes a worm drive motor assembly providing the base driving mechanism, a clutching mechanism, and a gear reduction mechanism for reducing the torque capacity required of the clutch mechanism. When the clutching mechanism is engaged, power is transmitted from the worm drive through the gear reduction mechanism to the output shaft to selectively engage the mode of operation of the transfer case, i.e., two-wheel or four-wheel drive mode, and the drive torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. The worm gear is non-backdrivable such that the motor need not provide a holding torque.

    Abstract: A rider having a centralizing or radially stabilizing bushing that reduces vibration and a longitudinal stabilizer element or lip to prevent longitudinal translation of the stabilizing bushing. The centralizing bushing maintains contact, alignment, and general stability between the bushing and the shaft and reduces noise and fluctuations between the bushing and the shaft when they are moving relative to each other. The bushing is mounted in the rider and includes a bearing engagable with the shaft and a cap engagable with the longitudinal stabilizing unit. There are high friction, elastomeric means engagable with the bearing for limiting movement of the bearing away from the shaft and the rider is under unbalanced radial load conditions. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the bearing is essentially the same as the coefficient of thermal expansion of the shaft.

A routine within the CPU is executed by the computer at least when an impending ratio interchange is sensed. The routine uses stored data which includes friction disc parameters, engine operating parameters and vehicle performance parameters to determine if the impending shift will result in sufficient excess heat energy to cause the temperature of components in the friction device to exceed a predetermined design limit. If the temperature design limit will be exceeded, a reduced energy ratio interchange is commanded utilizing adaptive parameters for the upcoming shift; and if the temperature design limit will not be exceeded, the ratio interchange proceeds without adaptive parameters.
