  • Patent number: 6461107
Abstract: The present invention provides for cooling the squealer tip region of a high pressure turbine blade used in a gas turbine engine comprising coating the squealer tip with a metallic bond coat. Micro grooves oriented in the radial direction are fabricated into the airfoil on the interior surface of the squealer tip above and substantially perpendicular to the tip cap. A micro groove oriented in the axial direction is fabricated along the joint corner between the squealer tip side wall and the, tip cap to connect and act as a plenum with all of the micro grooves oriented in the radial direction. Tip cap cooling holes are drilled through the tip cap and connected to the micro groove that ultimately forms a plenum. TBC ceramic is then deposited on both blade external surfaces and the tip cavity, forming micro channels from micro grooves as a result of self shadowing.

  • Patent number: 6461108
Abstract: A cooling system for cooling of the squealer tip surface region of a high pressure turbine blade used in a gas turbine engine and a method for making a system for cooling of the squealer tip surface region of a high pressure turbine blade used in a gas turbine engine. The method comprises the steps of channeling apertures in a tip cap to a diameter of about 0.004″ to about 0.020″ to allow passage of cooling fluid from a cooling fluid source; applying a bond coat of about 0.0005″ to about 0.010″ in thickness to the tip cap such that the bond coat partially fills the channels; applying a porous TBC layer of at least about 0.003″ in thickness to the bond coat, such that the porous TBC fills the channels; applying a dense ceramic TBC layer over the porous layer; and, passing cooling fluid from a cooling fluid source through the channel into the porous TBC. The density of the dense TBC layer can be varied as needed to achieve desired cooling objectives.

  • Patent number: 6454532
Abstract: A drive system for a variable diameter rotor system includes a plurality of rotor blade assemblies with inner and outer blade segments. The outer blade segment being telescopically mounted to the inner blade segment. The VDR retraction/extension system includes a reeling system driven by a harmonic gear system. The reeling system includes a strap drum for winding and unwinding a strap attached to the outer blade segments. In operation, a control shaft drives the wave generator at a higher or lower rotational speed relative to a main rotor drive shaft assembly thereby causing the wave generator to rotate relative to the rotor hub assembly. In turn, the wave generator causes the external flex gear teeth to sequentially engage the ring gear internal gear teeth as the wave generator rotates within the flex gear. As the flex gear is mounted to the strap drum, the differential rotation between the flex gear and ring gear causes the strap drum to rotate relative the rotor hub assembly.

  • Patent number: 6447472
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a pump apparatus for use in conjunction with the feeding and aspiration of a patient's gastro-intestinal tract is provided. In accordance with the present invention, an apparatus and method are provided in which the aspiration of excessive material and air from a patient's gastro-intestinal tract proceeds until the flow of aspirate ceases. A flow detector determines when aspirate flow has ceased. Aspirate removed from the gastro-intestinal tract is retained for subsequent return to the patient for absorption to prevent dehydration. After the aspiration is concluded, material aspirated from the intestine and additional nutrition or fluids are introduced into the gastro-intestinal tract for absorption by the intestine. After an optional delay to allow for the absorption of materials by the intestine, the aspiration cycle resumes. This frequent aspiration serves to prevent overfeeding and its associated risks of intestinal distention.

  • Patent number: 6447483
Abstract: A thoracentesis device for removing fluid from a cavity includes a hypersensitive dual spring indication mechanism for alerting the user of any contact to internal body organs. The thoracentesis device includes a handle and an outer needle fixedly attached to the handle. The outer needle forms a sharp distal end and a spring-loaded inner needle, including a blunt tip distal end, is slidably disposed inside the conduit of the outer needle. A first spring has a first spring force that urges the inner needle into a fully extended position and a second spring has a second spring force that acts on the inner needle in opposition of the first spring force. A first and second opposite colored indicators are arranged in contact with the springs so as to alert the user to any initial contact made by the thoracentesis device.
